I've always been under the impression that 40 man guys can still be a PTBNL as well. Mass, can you please explain which it is and why?

I could see how the casual fan might think he's the new closer because they remember how dominant he was with the Angels. But to see people who actually get paid to write about baseball think he will be the new closer is just mind-boggling. How can they actually get paid to write something so wrong? I think most on this board could easily write a better article about this trade than those people.

I thought because it was a vesting option, they couldn't but I was ignoring the fact that it also had a buyout, meaning there was a team option as well. I think it was way more than needed to dump, i think the Mets were desperate to dump K-Rod at some point before the trade deadline. With his option for next year vesting at 17.5 million if he finished only 20 more games, they had to very badly want him off the team because unlike the Brewers, the Mets likely couldn't get away with putting Rodriguez into a setup role without the union filing a grievance. Since the Brewers already have an established closer, they wouldn't be demoting Rodriguez by putting him in a setup role that almost assuredly will result in his big option not vesting. Thus, i think the Mets were going to trade K-Rod no matter what, it was only a matter of when, to what team, and what they got in return, not at all if. This article pretty much says the same thing. Basically simply trading him to someone for anything would be a win for the Mets.

I don't even think you can give up a player on the 40 man as a PTBNL.I'm pretty sure the PTBNL cannot be in the same league as the player traded for. So that would mean 25 man roster no but could still be on 40 man. Stevo, if the option is declined, I believe he becomes an instant free agent, similar to if he were released, so no picks.

If Gamel is included, he would have just been named right away.

Depending on the cash coming back, what do you think the ceiling of prospects is? If it's indeed 5 mil, I would assume better prospects. Maybe Rivas, Gennett, Gindl? If less (maybe 3.5 to cover the buyout), then Farris/Davis'?

The second post on there makes me laugh. The guy says it's stupid to trade two prospects for a high paid reliever, because what we really need is a starter or two. Lol. What an idiot. He's just jealous.Multiple people think we still need starting pitching. I'm confused as to why. Maybe they think our staff should be comprised of all ace-quality pitchers. Yeah, Thome would be worse than Kotsay in the field. I'd make the move if we were in the AL but he'd cost too much and basically would be good for one at-bat.

Sometimes (well usually) the casual fan really annoys the hell out of me. Obviously the jsonline comments are full of uninformed people but there are those over there hoping we didn't have to give up Jungmann or Bradley. That obviously wouldn't be allowed. Also, like others have said, this trade is about finding someone to take on the salary so that in itself is the most valuable part of this trade for the Mets. I highly doubt a Green/Gamel/Thornburg is included. Most likely low to mid-tier prospect like Farris/Gennett or one of our 43 LF/1B types.

I always knew Heath Bell was cool but the fact that he gave away a Yoda backpack with memorabilia just raised him a few notches in my book.

He can handle grounders just fine. Throwing was always his problem.

Jim Breen justposted on twitter basically asking if the Rangers would trade Chris Davis for Gamel. He says that Davis has legit 25-30 HR potential and Gamel may only max out at 20. Ignoring whether or not the Rangers would actually do this, I'm undecided on whether I would do this. Davis may hit for more power but I think Gamel will get on base more. Davis also strikes out a ton (I know some people claim K's aren't really any different than other outs but 200+ K potential is still ugly). Davis is a year younger and his minor league numbers are better than Gamel's too. They have both also played 3B and 1B. I guess one could argue that Davis has already proven himself a little in the majors (pretty good 1st year, fell off a bit years after) while Gamel really hasn't. Then again, I don't think Gamel has gotten the opportunity Davis has either. I think both will end up being solid major-league contributors so I would be happy with either.

Agreed. I think Melvin will at least explore options this off-season. As far as right now, if they could get a good shortstop for Gamel, I think you have to think about trading him.I would think about trading Gamel for a good SS who we could control for a few years. However, Gamel didn't really get consistent playing time when he was up here this year. Plus, he had to worry about playing 3B, something he even said bothered him. He also hit the ball hard in his first few games but they just didn't fall for hits. IF Gamel ends up being our full-time 1B next year, I think he will do just fine.

Did you forget he died last year? Or are you talking about Hank or Hal?

I don't hate Schroeder as much as some but what's not to like about Cirillo besides his voice? He actually provides some insight, he's funny, and he doesn't hesitate to call someone out (he isn't such a homer like Schroeder).
