  1. Scherzer guy is throwing 96 MPH after 90+ pitches. Wow.
  2. The good thing for Soup is that the expectations for him are so low that even if he gives up a run every 2 innings, he's easily exceeded them.
  3. What we knew before this "news": 1. Many professional atheletes in all sports have used and continue to use performance enhancing drugs. 2. 101% of the people that saw ARod's press conferance about steroids thought he was full of it. So now we are going to highlight an old quote from Conseco's book, add it to speculation from a teamate and call it new information? It just seems like we are beating a dead horse, here. Another round of articles and sports radio segments? Yipee.
  4. That's possible but there are many players that would rather retire before they accept a bench role at league minimum. And my gut tells me that Edmonds is prepared to retire.
  5. If you are going to only list Suppan's stats from this year, shouldn't you only reference his 2009 salary? Furthermore, shouldn't it be prorated for the number of starts he's had so far? He's made 4 starts out of an expected 30 or so starts, so the Brewers have paid $12.5 mil x 4 / 30 = $1.7 mil for his 7.32 ERA. I hated the signing and think he's not a good pitcher but let's be fair. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. If Edmonds was willing to take one a pinch hitting role for peanuts, he'd already be on a team. He wanted to start and he probably wanted a substantial salary. That's why he isn't in the league right now.
  7. I guess I just seriously question the assumption that drilling the opposing teams players will reduce the amount of times your own players get hit. It may be true but I just don't see it.
  8. Certain hitters are going to be better against certain types of pitchers so I don't have a huge problem with it. For what it's worth, "The Book" tried to group different types of pitchers and then looked to see if batters performed better or worse against different groups. They couldn't find anything. That doesn't prove anything but I don't think it's fair to assume that batters perform better against certain kinds of pitchers (although I think it's a reasonable assumption), much less that managers can identify what pitchers, batters should be expected to perform better against (I doubt it). It's usually just same near-meaningless 15 AB sample of results that mangers are using to identify "good matchups". I doubt that Macha is going anything different.
  9. So I figure, as long as Gallardo's ERA finishes below 3.6 this season, he'll probably have been a more valuable player to this ballclub than Sheets was with his 3.09 ERA last season. BP covered this topic: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7588 According to BP, it's about a 7 run difference per season. Assuming a 220 IP season, that's about .3 runs per 9 innings. That's huge, obviously.
  10. The Brewers have been terrible with the base loaded so far this year. That's descriptive but not predictive.
  11. How the HELL are the Brewers winning this one!? WOW!
  12. Yeh, that was really smart to let Maholm lead off the last inning, with 100 pitches already under his belt. Why do managers do these things? I think in this case rluz, people were just having a little fun. I wasn't trying to pick on one guy, there. It was an innocent remark. Just a general observation.
  13. I'm always amazed by how quickly fans turn on some generic mediocre reliever, when he has a bad start to the season. Julio has 5 IP this year, before today. Is he anything special? Of course not. He has a career 4.37 ERA in 442 IP. Just another guy who had a bad start.
  14. We'll the Crew gets the 2 runs back, to keep it interesting. Damn you Brewers, for sucking me back in!
  15. I hope we aren't stupid enough to purposely hit two batter in a row. It has made this game almost a lost cause.
  16. hmm....once again....bases loaded, two out. do we get a run? I would expect them to about once every 3 times?
  17. Bush is just getting screwed with the defense. No errors but there could already be 2 out, instead of none.
  18. Let's pour it on and make the 9th a no doubter. We've had enough drama for the evening.
  19. Now that's the kind of sacrifice I like to see! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That is a good way to break a hand, though. OUCH.
  20. I don't believe "clutch" is a repeatable skill, but hitting wRISP is significant. ... which is why i said it was "by no means insignificant." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I only pointed out the "per 3 games" thing to put it in some kind of context. And those 56 less hits probably represent a lot more than 56 runs, depending on when they would have occurred and what kind of hits they were. Look at some of these run values: http://www.tangotiger.net/lwtsrobo.html
  21. Steroid testing has certainly changed the game but offensive production has been pretty consistent for year: YEAR: BA/OBP/SLG/OPS 2000: .270/.345/.437/.782 2001: .264/.332/.426/.758 2002: .261/.331/.417/.748 2003: .264/.332/.422/.754 2004: .266/.335/.428/.763 2005: .264/.330/.419/.749 2006: .269/.336/.432/.768 2007: .268/.336/.422/.758 2008: .264/.333/.416/.749 I think someone will hit 60 HRS again but nothing like the 90's. 2009: .263/.340/.422/.762
  22. Marcel, which uses FIP as a foundation, projected a 4.22 ERA. CHONE said 4.26. ZiPS isn't a big fan (4.83). Marcel and CHONE expected a slightly improved walk rate from 2008 but also assumed his strikeout rate would slightly decrease. Perez certainly has a unique history with the walks but having a reasonable (although not good) walk rate for 2 years suggests his days of walk rate over 5 are behind him. 4 starts really doesn't change much, IMO. What is a 4.5 ERA from a starter worth on the open market? I guess that's open for a significant amount of debate. I think we can all agree that it's not worth $12 mil/year. I'm suprised fangraphs has his 2008 season as worth only 1.3 wins and $5.8 mil. I guess it depends heavily on what you think a replacement starting pitcher is. I think I would have been happy to get him for 3/24. As for his salary, I shouldn't have said "no idea" but I don't think we should assume that any time a team is interested in a player, it becomes public knowledge. I think there's a lot of negotiating that goes on behind close doors. that the public never finds out about As a result, I 'm not sure how acurate we can get when we try to speculate on what it would have taken to get a specific player. Just my opinion.
  23. Talk about small sample alert. I just saw this, so let's use the current stats: Brewers: .252 BA / .256 BA w/RISP NL: .258 BA /.252 BA w/RISP Holy clutch! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif As for the "surprise" part: 2008: Brewers: .253 BA / .245 BA w/RISP(1413AB) NL: .264 BA /.260 BA w/RISP Had the Brewers gotten about 1extra hit w/RISP every 3 games, they would have had a .249 BA w/RISP. That is by no means insignificant but fans act like their favorite team never scores enough w/RISP The Brewers just have a low team BA.
