  1. Bring in Shouse for the left hander! that's why you warmed him up, right!?
  2. rluz...I agree. It's just Prince got a huge bomb and the home stand is going so well.... I know. I'm not even fooling myself. It would suck big time, especially with the Cubs and Cards losing.
  3. Bill loves the walk to load the bases. Nevermind that Torres walks a decent amount of hitters and Burke has been terrible in his short time in the majors. Prove me wrong, Bill! Please!
  4. This would be a crushing defeat. To me at least. And to me, this seems like one they don't really deserve to win. Not that it won't sour the rest of my evening, though. Calling for a bunt by a positional player with 2 strikes is kind of crazy.
  5. Hall with a crappy throw and this inning is turning ugly. Hall's defense has just been terrible this year. It just doesn't make sense that a guy who played an OK SS a couple years ago could be so bad at 3B.
  6. Why heck is Shouse warming up? There isn't a LH batter in sight. Why is Kendall throwing balls into the stands? This sucks.
  7. Yea Braun hit into the DP, but be honest. With a runner on third with less than two outs, are you really saying that Weeks and Cameron aren't low on the totem pole for guys you would want up in that situation? If I'm just looking for a sac fly? Agreed. I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. Prince's HR must have really upset Bill. That's not how you go ahead in the 8th!
  8. The Brewers never did hit the ball out of the infield, so we should be happy to have gotten two gift runs.
  9. Are we supposed to say mean things about Braun now?
  10. Please Braun, make him throw you strikes with the bases loaded!
  11. I'm glad it worked out, but why was Kapler batting? Where was Branyan???? It should be 5-3. Yost was playing for the double play, instead of the RBI walk.
  12. Calling for a bunt there was pretty darn silly. Thankfully, Arizona seems intent on giving this one away. WOW. That throw to home was HORRIBLE.
  13. This game has gotten very boring......
  14. Arizona makes an out on the base paths to end the inning. Their fans must really be sick of that this year.
  15. The only thing that's really easier about it is the fact that there's less ground to cover. The fact that Chers have to cover more ground is exactly why teams put their best outfield defender there. They need to have speed AND instinct to get good jumps because they are expected to make outs over a significantly larger area. It's why their defensive metrics are superior to corner outfielders and it's why the average CFer's offensive numbers can't touch an average corner outfielders. More is asked from them defensively and for good reason. Here's a short article related to this topic: http://ussmariner.com/2007/07/26/outfield-defense/ Trust me, Robin Yount thinking CF was easier is not typical.
  16. Neither Bush or Parra have shown the consistency to have a huge edge over the 5th starter anyway and As dissapointing as Parra and Bush have been, there is a substantial gap between them and McClung and Weaver. McClung has a 6.23 ERA in 39 career starts and Weaver is getting shelled in AAA (and was terrible in 2006 and 2007 in the majors). Unless Villy is tried again in the rotation (which I wouldn't be entirely against) there is a huge gap, IMO. If you are worried about keeping a #5 stretched out, they can get those starts on the 15th and 21st and be fine for July.
  17. There are many who believe that centerfield is the easiest of all three positions to play (ball doesn't slice as funny), assuming you have speed. So, if that's true, then I see no reason why Braun could (eventually) handle CF, after Cameron's departure. The slice might make judging some balls more difficult but on balance, there is no way that CF is the easiest of the 3 outfield position. There's a reason why defensive specialists play in CF and Cust, Dunn and Manny play a corner position. Many of the better defensive corner outfielders can also play a passible CFer (Gross) but that's about it. That said, I think Hart could be an average defensive CFer. He has decent instinct and certainly the speed. Braun hasn't been in the outfield long enough for me to really have an opinion, although you'd think he at least has the raw tools for it.
  18. The question has never been whether the Brewers COULD afford Sheets. It's whether they want to make a financial commitment to him that probably would extend to at least 2012.
  19. I could not agree more. Furthermore, I would have no problem with those 15th and 21st starts being split between McClung and Villenuava, with each going 3-4 innings, depending on when their turn in the batting order comes up. I had no problem with giving some of the starters an extra day's rest earlier in the season but it's time to step it up.
  20. oh quite the contrary... seems like we are still immaturely guilty of playing "up" and "down" to whoever shows up. Instead of cherry picking examples that support the theory (and you are certainly not the only one who's guilty of that), I wish someone would actually try to prove the longstanding belief that the Brewer offensive performances against good and bad pitchers are atypical. I think that fans simply have a tendency to overcompensate for pitching match-ups when trying to come up with their expectations for the offense that day. For instance Johan Santana has given up 4 or more earned runs in 47 of his 187 career starts (about 25%). Why should we be especially surprised that the Brewers got 4 earned runs against him this year? Also, I think that fans sometimes get tricked into thinking a slightly below average pitcher with a 6+ ERA after 5 starts is completely terrible. I'll bet you right now that many Astro and Braves fans are wondering why their team always seem to get dominated by crappy pitchers like Dave Bush. In reality, a 6.0 ERA pitcher still gives up 2 or less runs on occasion and a 3.0 ERA pitcher still gets hammered on occasion. Those are just the games that we remember more.
  21. The point is Dillon can give Fielder a day off. Or he can play 3B or OF. He just shouldn't be at 2B because he can't handle it defensively. I have to agree with end. Dillon is basically out of position at 2B. There's no need for that. I am not sure why everyone is so high on Dillon? He is the 25th player on the roster and if you ask me TGJ should be on the roster instead of Dillon. I can't remember the last time the guy got a hit. Dillon was 2 for his last 6 in pitch-hit situations but failed 3 times in a row! Unnacceptable. Meanwhile, Gwynn was 2 for his last 23 and was batting .200 overall.
  22. Beyond that, 10 head-to-head games remain. Are there such things as higher-leverage games? Absolutely. And if the Brewers might need to rely on a little good luck to catch the Cubs, I'd want them to play head to head as much as possible. A ball bouncing the right way kills two birds with one stone (Brewer wins nad Cubs loss).
  23. That's why it drives you nuts, Russ, because you can't put a number behind it. There's lot's of things in baseball and life that you can't prove or disprove with statistics. That fact does not "drive me nuts" in the least. Just the way it goes. He said he knows the pitcher wants to throw strikes and not walk him in that situation. So he becomes very aggressive with the bases loaded knowing the first or second pitch will be a fastball that catches a lot of white... I don't think that's luck, I think that's Counsell showing he's a smart hitter. If it just comes down to game theory, pitchers should be adjusting their approach to Counsell (especially if he's publicly given up his approach). It would be intereting to see if Counsell really has swung at more pitches in that situation. Someone start parsing that retrosheet data!
  24. How about the 50 OPS point increase with RISP over 1000 PA's? Has he been clutch? Yes. Does that mean we should expect him to continue being clutch? Maybe a little? I don't know? You have to understand, there are hundreds of players in the league at any given point. Some are going to do much better or worse in clutch situation by random chance. Clutch is a tough thing to prove statistically. "The Book" tackled it and found some evidence of clutch, but the effect was pretty small. Here's a small snippet of the start of that chapter. "One of the pervasive themes of this book is the danger of inferring too much from too little by underestimating the influence of randomness..." http://insidethebook.com/c04.shtml
  25. They do have quite a bit of players playing over their head though. Some of the Ryan Theriots, Ryan Dempsters, and Sotos will come back to earth. There will be some Derrick Lee and Fukudome slumps as well. I just don't see the Cubs as the 100 win team that they are on pace for. Right, they were expected to win around 88 games before the season started. Even if we say that the entire season has been a fluke for them so far and they are really still just that 88 win team, they should be expected to win 93 games. Woo Hooo!
