I was really worried about that inning for a while. Two batters with first-pitch strikes lead to two strike-outs. It was encouraging to see Gallardo work around that leadoff double. Hopefully more of those hard-hit balls hit the grass against LeCure. I'm not impressed with this guy.
Can someone explain to me why Roenicke always has Gallardo bunt? Let him swing the bat. Seriously. LeCure looks really good because he's pounding the zone and the Brewers aren't seeing any balls fall. They aren't swinging and missing. Literally - no swinging strikes. They'll break through.
I count three swinging strikes. One to Gomes (a noted hacker), one to the catcher, and one to the pitcher. For a guy who lives by cutting down batters left and right, that's concerning. Also concerning is his total inability to throw a first-pitch strike. The only first-pitch strikes he's thrown have been put in play, and most of those hits.
As a stat by which to judge pitchers, ERA is only better than wins. WHIP can also be a little bit misleading because of the luck involved in giving up hits.
Those numbers for Gallardo do not look good. Hopefully he can sharpen up today and get a series win. It's so nice to see seven quality hitters in the lineup. When Morgan comes back and starts to platoon with Gomez, it'll be seven or eight depending on the day.
Someone mentioned the Cardinals - Gameday's live look-in has awful timing for when it cuts out. Runners on first and third, no outs, 1-1 count, and...exit.
When I'm at the stadium I boo the opposing pitcher for doing this, but not the pitcher on my team. It's simple: you want to rattle him. It's the same reason I will respectfully tell an ump or referee when he makes a bad call in a game in which I am playing. Even if he's right, I want to throw him off.
Pretty good match-up for the Brewers, although it seems like Arroyo always carves up the Brewers. It'd be nice to revisit the Reds, and give them back like they gave in Cincy opening weekend.
DiFelice: what's not to love about a guy who can be effective by throwing one pitch at 82 mph without a funky delivery? I want DiFelice to make the team so bad.
That's a solid win all the way around. Solid pitching by Wolf, solid hitting (some walks, some hits, some home runs), solid outing by Axford. It's nice to get another W, rest the bullpen, and win the series with the Reds coming into town.
With a four-run lead is when you want a mop-up guy warming, not Loe, who seems to be Roenicke's "bullpen ace" of this staff. Come on, Ax, today's a day for a good outing.
I'm not looking forward to baseball in mid-November. The problem with the playoffs is not that too few teams get in; it's that the same teams get in. I don't want a never-ending playoff like the NBA.
For non-prospects, the Brewers really need to forget about the "will clear waivers/opt out" business when making roster decisions. Put your best players on the damn field already, and cut the junk off the roster.
Three outs to get one run. PH-Weeks-Gomez coming up. If one of them gets on, Braun gets another shot. If nothing else two out of three in Philly is a pretty darn good result.
