  1. I thought Gamel was the only one that got hurt by (as some would say on this forum) being stupid.
  2. If we can complain that Melvin's worst move was signing Kotsay, I think DM did a pretty good job.
  3. My point is with Gooden it's not back breaking. Was it smart? No. A combination of those would be back breaking.
  4. --Looking back at the offseason from a distance and with the benefit of hindsight, it's absolutely laughable that the Bucks acquired Salmons, Gooden and Maggette. There was a reason Drew Gooden played for about ten different teams during his career ... and we signed him to a fat FA deal? Salmons -- Got hot at the right time and we decided to pony up. I don't hate the deal...even now...but I think in a year or two we'll hate this one more than Gooden's. Gooden -- Not a ton of money (still a lot), but several red flags. I'd be interested to know who else was going after him...same thing with Salmons. Maggette - I liked this trade and still do. We didn't give up much to get him. Is he limited as a player? Yes, but that doesn't mean he's useless (some will argue). I think missing on some picks recently hurts as well. How many first round picks are left on the roster? 3? Bogut, Jennings & Sanders? Joe A, Yi, and not having first rounders some years has hurt as welll. Even this year...with 3 second round picks we somehow screw all of that up as well. I think you can afford some misses in free agency if you can draft...having poor free agent moves and poor drafts...that's not good. Also...haven't seen him much...but what's with Jodie Meeks? Why'd we trade him? Seems like we should've just kept him and not re-signed Salmons.
  5. What about playing Young at 1B after Fielder leaves? I'm not advocating trading for him, but there could be a spot for him.
  6. Disappointing...I remember meeting Meche when he was on the T-Ratts... It was a T Ratt bandana give away day and I was getting autographs (I was a kid). The drill was to give the bandana to the player and turn around so they could use your back to support the bandana while signing it... Meche was the next guy up...and I left that day with a Gil Meche autograph on the back of my white Bucks t-shirt. He must not have been in the know. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Good luck to Gil!
  7. Talk to a Royals fan instead of just using metrics as you will find that Betencourt is liuke Weeks from 2 years ago.....makes insanely ridiculously good plays then screws up his footwork the next.....The people on here that are saying he is worthless should be dismissed. I think his lack of a batting eye at the plate (5th in the league at swinging at pitches out of the strike zone) could be helped by placing him in the 8 spot in front of the pitcher. How you can you defend his complete lack of walks? Should we dismiss those numbers as well? Bentancourt had 6 more walks than Gomez...it about 300 more at-bats...
  8. I like the trade. For all bf.net folks here have been talking about defense and how it can somewhat change a pitchers numbers, how does our defense in 2011 as of now project to the Royals the past few years? In other words, it seems like we're improving big-time with pitching, but our defense will stink up the joint. What defensive SS are left in free agency? We don't need a big time hitter by any means. Also, I don't think it would take much to get JJ back.
  9. Wow... I still like Escobar, but DM hasn't traded too many guys that we've regretted so I think they may feel he won't improve as much as I had hoped. Losing Cain hurts, but you have to give up something to get something. Betancourt... http://sports.espn.go.com...yers/stats?playerId=6218 Ouch. 104 walks in 2,890 at-bats. As much as I hate to say this, I think we need to consider moving Gamel + perhaps another prospect for a SS. I think we can get by with Gomez in CF. I just don't think we can get by with both Betancourt and Gomez. We don't need to waste this great rotation on shoddy defense.
  10. I haven't been the biggest Weeks fan at times, but he's proving me wrong. I'd love to see him sign an extension. If we lose Prince, what are the chances of Weeks moving down in the lineup? Or do folks prefer he stay at the leadoff spot?
  11. It stinks if we lose Lawrie...but at the same time Prince isn't bringing back much pitching right now either. You can't have it both ways. Who knows what Lawrie will turn into, but it is clear in baseball right now pitching >>> hitting in terms of trades. Let's see where Lawrie ends up in the field and also how good of a hitter he is at the MLB level. Let's not jump off rooftops just quite yet. What did we expect for Lawrie? And more importantly...what is realistic?
  12. I don't think getting 3 starts in almost 3 weeks is being thrown to the wolves, and I don't think he was rotting on the bench as he spent time getting to know the pitching staff. I guess it depends on what the 'plan' was for him. If it was to play most of the year in AAA, then come up in August/September...yes he was thrown into the wolves. I don't think 3 weeks of watching/learning makes him an expert. He was thrown to the wolves IMO, but handled it well. Perhaps the JS team could supply season predictions in March or April, and then could use the end-of-season grades to measure how much (or little) each player lived up to their hopes. Of course, the pre-season predictions would probably also be flawed, and it wouldn't give them a basis for comparing players called up or acquired during the season. This is a great idea...if the pre-season predictions aren't flawed. The grades don't make sense, but comparing them to something would be helpful. Obviously Braun and Fielder are expected to do more and we didn't expect much out of some players. I think a comparison like you mention would be very, very helpful.
  13. Al, Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but that story is 13 years old. Not saying things have or haven't changed...just sayin'.
  14. We have as much evidence to say Gamel has shot himself in the foot as to say the organization mishandled him....maybe more. How so? A couple of JS blogs that were poorly written/slanted? I get Gamel had to mature a bit, but I don't think he shot himself in the foot. It's not like he's thrown a bat at an umpire or anything else. He has really shot himself in the foot by putting in extra time in the OF...if you're going to knock him for JS blog articles you also have to praise him as well. I just think there isn't a 'plan'. My guess is the Brewers didn't know what Casey would do this year and he played well. Now they have to make a decision to either move someone to 1B or trade Gamel.
  15. I hope I don't get beat up too bad for asking this, but Wolf has had a fairly solid 2nd half of the season. I'm not trying to debate his salary or years left on his contract, but earlier in the year it almost appeared he'd have a tough time being a #4 contending staff. His ERA is under 4 (I know it's not the best stat) since the all-star break and a huge difference is home runs allowed: 21 in the pre-all star break and only 6 after. I know that could be a small sample either way, but if Wolf can pitch like he has in the 2nd half in 2011 that gives me a little bit more confidence we can improve this staff next year. Obviously Wolf has a spot in the rotation no matter what next year, but if he can perform like this I feel better about at least one spot in the rotation for next year. Thoughts?
  16. The Brewers have more a history of moving the blockade than moving the prospect. Hardy/Escobar, Overbay/Fielder, etc... And in this case, most likely Fielder being traded provides the open position (be it 3B, LF or 1B). Granted, they have treated Gamel differently than they have with other prospects to come up (Fielder, Escobar, Braun, Weeks, Hardy, etc..). Perhaps you could make a case that they are playing him similar to the way they handled Hart when he broke into the majors... I may need a new name... Not to side track the thread, but Gamel is different (not him really, but the situation). Until we know the 'plan' I think he's fair game and could easily be moved. It will be another interesting off-season to see what happens. I just hope we can keep enough bats on the team for when the young pitching arrives. It'll be important to keep the right pieces.
  17. There's been no indication that Gamel will be traded this off-season. None. What kind of indication do you need? I'm not saying he's for sure going to be traded, but I wouldn't say there has been zero indication. Any top prospect that might be blocked or is on the path Mat is apparently with the Brewers likely is on the block for the right price. I don't think the Brewers are going to say they're going to trade Mat...until plans are made for him to be in Milwaukee I'd guess he very well is on the block. Just depends on what the price is.
  18. Does adding him to the 40-man have any impact in terms of options and such? Good luck Mark!
  19. As usual, I still don't get not playing Gamel. The basics reasoning aside which has been discussed here...what is his future with the the team? My own biased opinion thinks he will be a very good player...but for who? You would think the Brewers would try to get him some time either to see what they have for next year on their team or try to raise his trade value. I know it's still early, but I guess I'll be very confused if things don't change the rest of the month. We need to continue to get a better idea of what he can do on the major league level for our own future...and if Mat's future isn't with the Brewers having him go on fire for a month during a meaningless time for the team could enhance what we can get back for Mat. I'm not advocating trading him, but there comes a point and time where we will have to trade him if we're not going to play him at the MLB level.
  20. There is now an Oklahoma City newspaper article with additioal speculation -- They've speculated on the local radio here that Oklahoma City is where the Brewers are trying to end up. I think they've predicted it.
  21. My bad trwi7. I should have been more clearer...with the 'news' that Hawkins is going to maybe go under the knife my point was related to two things: - What is his status next year in terms of his contract? (he doesn't have an option...does he?) - And do we haven insurance on his deal? I liked the Hawkins signing at the time. And trwi7 I agree with your bullpen...my question relates to Hawkins health. I believe he's on the team no matter what, but I am nervous about whether or not he'll be healthy next year. I do think we've started to build a very good bullpen internally. Again trwi7, I apologize for my crappy response to your post. I think you have the bullpen filled out very well if it works. I worry about Hawkins though and again we can take a flyer. I also think having the bullpen resolved or mostly resolved should allow us to focus more on starting pitching.
  22. Instead of being in the Media for about 4 hours, this story has now dragged on for 2 extra days. I don't think it's turning people off. There's no such thing as bad publicity. Maybe...I know there was a HUGE celebration on the last hole in the playoff! I kid, I kid. In all seriousness though, Johnson winning would've been great for golf in the US. That is the real shame (I'm not saying he doesn't get any blame). I think we need another guy to root for and with Dustin's age and performance in the US Open (before the final day) he would've been the new life for fans. It's a shame he didn't win (or Bubba for that matter). I'm not knocking on the winner, but for US viewers if Tiger doesn't figure it out and Phil is hot and cold that is going to lead to the sport not being popular unless there is a 'new' guy to root for. Dustin seems to have the game, the personalty, etc. to be that guy. It's a shame he and those involved screwed this up. I still think there's no way they should've let the mess happen with the crowd. That doesn't mean he would've won, but at the end of the day his 'penalty' had nothing to do with his shot. I've golfed there...I get the rule. At the end of the day though, it didn't impact his shot. The rule needs to be there, but the fact that he got a penalty and it didn't aid him makes this more difficult to justify (and again...I know based on the rules they had to call it....IMO it should not have gone that far).
  23. Bullpen next year. Axford, Braddock, Villanueva, Coffey, Hawkins, Loe, Kintzler. Then you have guys like McClendon and Dillard as well. There's really no need to spend big money on relief pitchers. Even if the cheap guys from the farm are worse, they're not going to be that much worse and there's just not a ton of value in relief pitching. Hawkins might be on that list too if healthy, right? I also think it doesn't hurt to take a one-year flyer on a guy if necessary in terms of free agents. Something cheap and see if you can get lucky for a year. I don't think we'll need to go out and sign a lot of guys.
  24. Im not saying you are right or wrong, but what does it say about your organization if every time a player leaves, thoughts of bringing that player back in a different role are met with 'that bridge has been burned" or some other variation on a sour relationship? It's got to be a least a bit concerning. What players makeup 'every time a player leaves'? Sheets...and then who else? Hall? I don't think that list is actually all that long...
  25. Block fans from bunkers...this was somewhat stupid IMO. I know the Kohler course loves all the bunkers...but this was over the top IMO. I know Dustin should've known this, but at the same time the original 'alley' for him to hit his shot was tiny. A lot of people botched this...Johnson, his caddy, CBS, the 'professional' with the group, his partner, etc. They should've let him play. I know it is the rule, but at the same time it didn't change his shot at all. Oh well...I know golf is an old sport and such, but things like this are upsetting.
