  1. I wonder how many of you guys (if any) could outrun Prince in 90 feet? I wonder how many of us are better at accounting, sales, IT, etc. than Prince? He gets paid to be an athlete most of us here don't so it's a moot point IMO. I agree with twobrewers though that his weight doesn't matter as much to me as long as he's not signed long-term. There's no way I'd given him $10 million + per year if it was a 6 or 7 year deal. The way Mark has ran this franchise tells me that if it makes sense they'll extend Prince. I think the Brewers have talked to Prince and/or Boras about the situation and have made it known his conditioning is a concern going forward -- all speculation on my part. The Brewers should be concerned about it since he has gained weight. I think it's obvious that he's gained weight, but how much or how little it's impacted his game we don't know. I would like to see Prince wear a smaller uniform and part of me thinks his baggy uni is hiding his weight gain, but it is obvious when he's running around the bases he's up a few pounds IMO. It may not be a huge worry for his time in Milwaukee if he's traded or let go when he's a free agent, but it is a huge concern if he's extended since chances are his athleticism won't be able to make up for his weight and lack of conditioning. Again, this is all speculation and there isn't a 'right' answer, but agree with the post above that Prince reminds me of a potential Mo Vaughn in the making.
  2. I'll add the surprise name to the list - Joe Bateman. I've heard 'whispers' he'll be a September call up.
  3. I guess I'll ask this question...if Beckham came over here as a over hyped player, what soccer player could come over here and bring more interest to the sport? I don't think there's a single player that could do that, but I may be wrong. I think it's interesting how popular soccer seems to be growing up in some parts of the US. I played soccer for 13 years and loved playing it, but absolutely hate watching it on TV. I think at some point and time kids have to 'narrow' in on a sport and go in that direction. I think the lack of soccer appeal professionally in the US may have a factor in kids picking football, baseball, and/or basketball as their sports(s). I think basketball is more popular globally than we're giving it credit for. Is it more popular than soccer? No. Could LeBron James increase the international appeal of basketball? Absolutely IMO.
  4. Bogut's problem is he is now entering his fourth year, has only one reliable post move that he can go to, completely lost the jump shot he had at Utah and isn't a good free throw shooter. If he can't add diversity to his offensive game in his fourth year then I can safely assume that it isn't going to happen. He's 23 years old. He has plenty of time to develop his game and where he's at now he isn't a bad player. As far as an all-star, I don't care he's in the East. I'm talking a legit All-Star and not just a token spot because there aren't many other good players. It seems like they saw him and decided not to work anybody else out and do their homework on anybody else. Not every player is interested in working out for Milwaukee. Milwaukee most likely wanted to work out more players, but over the past few years that means nothing if a player refuses. Isn't it nice for a change to have a player who wants to be in Milwaukee? It's too early to tell if Alexander was worth the pick, but if you can give Bogut only four years to judge him as a player you should give Alexander four years.
  5. You can only say Bogut and Villanueva have potential for so long. If they can't do it after this season then you can pretty much say it's done, they're not getting any better than they are right now. I'm not real high on Villanueva so I'll agree with you on that one, but I think Bogut has improved every year. I think with a pass first point guard and Skiles in town it's not completely out of the question that Bogut generates some all-star consideration in the next few years. Sessions and LRMAM are 2nd round picks. The likelihood of either of them panning out as more than role players is slim. See - Michael Redd. I know it's one of the best examples in the history of the NBA, but one of these guys could pan out to be at least a solid starter. Alexander was a complete reach of a pick imo and was taken due to his athleticism and hustle and not his actual basketball skills. Who would you have taken? I'm fine with the pick the way the draft went. I'm not saying he's a slam dunk, but it was a risk that could be worth it. My biggest concern with Alexander that he's a tweener that really doesn't fit any position all that well. I think it's a little too early though to call it a complete reach of a pick IMO.
  6. If they don't make the playoffs this year, this team should be blown up. Completely. Nobody should be safe. We are the fifth oldest team in the NBA right now. The four teams older than us are Dallas, New Orleans, Phoenix and San Antonio. All four of those teams are much better than us. There are a ton of other teams that are younger and better than us. We are the oldest team in the East. I don't want to be mean or anything, but I think you're reaching a little bit here. The Bucks on paper might be old, but you could easily get rid of these 'old guys' that probably won't be in Milwaukee more than a season: Malik Allen, Francisco Elson, Adrian Griffin, Damon Jones, and Tyronn Lue I think the Bucks have a decent share of young talent/potential: Joe Alexander, Andrew Bogut, Luc Mbah a Moute, Ramon Sessions, and Charlie Villanueva are all under 24 years old. I think that's a pretty solid foundation and couple that with Redd (I know he's not loved by all, but he is an Olympian) and Jefferson and I think the Bucks are headed in the right direction.
  7. Per the JS: 2B Ray Durham SS Craig Counsell LF Laynce Nix 1B Prince Fielder RF Corey Hart 3B Bill Hall CF Mike Cameron C Jason Kendall P Ben Sheets
  8. did they get rid of the thing where you can see the play your opponent is selecting yet?? (only when you are playing another person on your box). This one, extremely stupid feature has kept me from buying any of the new Madden games. How exactly would you get rid of it? I know if you hold certain controller buttons you can 'hide' the play you called and select the plays around it, but not the main plays on the screen.
  9. I think it also depends on the sport. Peyton Manning is on literally every-other commercial in the US during football season, but probably has very, very low marketability outside of the US because football just isn't very popular anywhere else. Basketball is a different story due to the international makeup of the player base and it's popularity pretty much everywhere. Football and even baseball really can't get close to it's level of international popularity, despite being the two biggest sports in the US by far. I agree. I don't think Manning has a huge global following. Baseball may have some following in countries that have a professional league, but basketball would be the one major sport that may have a pretty big following.
  10. But there are global soccer stars that you probably just don't know/care about. I think your perception is distorted because you see fans elsewhere also rooting for your team, but you don't root for their teams, so you assume its a one way street. Rugby too. There are some very passionate rugby fans and some worldwide household names. But inside American borders, nobody would stop them on a street corner if he was in his full gear. I agree with what you're saying. I just think that an American sports star carries quite a bit of market value across the globe than most stars in other countries. I don't think my perception is distorted I'm probably not being very clear. I think a LeBron or Kobe is more marketable than just about any other athlete across the globe, but again it's probably difficult to really prove.
  11. I still hear people (mainly on the radio) ripping on Yost. I have no idea what there is to complain about in regards to the manager at this point. I think it's logical that if the team doesn't make the playoffs, he won't be back next year; but really how you can you be mad at the manager of a team that is 16 games over .500? I'm tired of it. I'm very happy to see the Brewers playing so well lately, as I'm sure most are here. Agreed. And I 100% agree with Brian's post. The negative is more likely to be talked about than the bad. It's like looking up reviews on apartments, hotels, cars, etc. More people are likely to take the time to let their negative thoughts known than their positive thoughts.
  12. Yeah, actually it is. The world is more than the US - just because Beckham hasn't popularized soccer here in the US doesn't mean it isn't already the most popular sport in the world. Actually, it is. It doesn't need to succeed here to be that popular. Whether you like it or not. Have you ever been to another country? Multiple countries on multiple continents? How would you know who carries star power throughout the world? It's not. I stated that soccer is the most popular sport/most watched...not sure if you caught that or not. I do wish you'd add to the discussion instead of knocking posts or thoughts. I have been to other places many times and Brett Favre is Brett Favre in Europe and Asia (not to the degree he is here) and obviously if any watched the Olympics Kobe and LeBron are loved on a global stage. I don't think I'm saying anything all that crazy. The world is all about money and let's just look at Nike and how many non-US athletes they have and how much they get paid. I would say you can't 'prove' star power, but there are ways to determine who has it and it's in the US. Again, soccer is the most popular sport and I believe Manchester United (IIRC) is the most valuable franchise in the world. I don't follow soccer, but I couldn't name more than 5 players outside of the US...the same is not true there for the US sports.
  13. What about taking out an ad in the JS or something?
  14. Was that supposed to be in blue? That thought is clearly wrapped in absurdidty. I understand the numbers, but I'm talking more about 'star power'. The men's basketball team carries quite a bit of weight in China. Yes soccer is the most watched sport, but I do believe that the US carries the star power in terms of individual players and/or sports. The population isn't a billion in the US so based on fans of a sport Europe/Asia will win hands down. I also think the US isn't going to just love soccer if they were good at it -- that's my entire point. The world loves soccer which is good and all, but I never see this sport being anything but an also ran. It just isn't fun to watch on television for the average sports fan. I played soccer for 13 years and it's great to play, but boring as heck to watch. The US could be the best in the world and it still wouldn't matter. And it is not American arrogance...if you want to watch soccer be my guest. US sports carry 'star power' worldwide. David Beckham isn't going to change soccer in the US and he's one of the most popular soccer players ever.
  15. on ESPN radio this morning they were trying to argue that the NBA/basketball have become the most popular sport worldwide (even more than soccer). I thought that comment was beyond stupid. Basketball has made inroads lately and IS more popular internationally than American Football, but soccer is, and always will be, the world's sport. If the US ever actually got good at soccer, its popularity would SOAR in the US I disagree with everything you say here. The US could be good at soccer and it would do little on the 'popularity'. You must hate basketball with the comment of how 'destroyed' the US has been. They haven't done well as of late, but what about before that? Do we have to have a Dream Team every year? Your entire opinion makes little sense if you take it this way: basketball got huge in the US and that followed internationally. The other nations have darn good teams and let's not lose sight of that. I would just take a look at the rosters and look at the NBA Stars that are playing for their country. We're not getting beat by Mickey Mouse out there -- the sport has grown globally because of the NBA regardless of the interest it draws now. So your point that the US has to 'catch' up in a sport carries little weight. The US determines the major sports and the world seems to follow. A better question would be...is the NBA more popular here or Europe, China, etc?
  16. Every "street clothes" picture I see of Braun has him wearing designer shoes, jeans, and an Affliction t-shirt, a staple of the Bro wardrobe. Fielder doesn't have a personality? He's always laughing his ass off and jumping up and down and smiling. I think Braun is the ****, no doubt, but he definitely isn't as big as Fielder, even if he has been more productive. Good stereotype. Let's remember it was Braun holding back Fielder. Fielder's so cool that he can push Parra. That's all I need to know about the Brewers' leader let alone the entire state.
  17. What exactly wasn't disclosed about the Gallardo injury? The news was released the following day. Gallardo and the Brewers played it off like no big deal. If IRCC, this site was happy that it was a minor injury and then crushed when the news was announced. I was very happy at first based on what Yo and the Brewers said and then the news released was more or less a 'shock'. http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=12491?page=1 See post #16.
  18. I doubt he starts '09 in MIL. He's proven nothing at AAA except velocity isn't everything, and that he hasn't been able to get those guys out consistently. He's nothing but depth at this point. I agree he won't start there, but if he improves in the off-season and early in AA/AAA he very well could be called up. I just don't think he should be in Milwaukee this September.
  19. Fielder is definitely above Braun. Braun is "cooler," but Fielder has more personality. Braun just acts like your average frat guy. What? This comment has nothing behind it. Fielder barely has a personality and that's not a bad thing, but to call Braun a frat guy seems quite strange IMO. There's no way Rodgers is the number one sports star...you have to do something to get that title. Maybe he will be in a few months, but as of now he just isn't IMO. I'd have to say right now it's probably Driver, but it's a tough call.
  20. In years past with Sheets, Weeks, etc. the team says it is no big deal and then a out of a nowhere a DL stint happens. You don't remember that every happening in the past 3 to 4 years? I think Gallardo this year tops them all.
  21. Which players do you represent that are in the bigs? How closely do players follow the organization (ie a AAA guy that plays a position and follows the MLB to see what that position guy is doing or isn't doing)?
  22. I don't want to be a jerk, but I don't think Pena deserves a call up in September. He has a great arm, but he's had issues as of late. I think he'll be in Milwaukee next year, but this isn't the old Brewers where you call up guys with potential. We need to call up guys that can perform.
  23. I know there was a lot of hand wringing about letting him go this off-season, but I for one thought it might have been the best move for the Brewers not to sign him, especially considering the kind of cash the Reds had to pay for him. I think this was more of worrying about who would close in 2008 than Cordero. I was never a fan of the Gagne signing and he's turned it around a little now, but if he was our closer all year we wouldn't be where we are. Who would know that Torres was the answer? I think that's exactly some of your point in how the Brewers have found closers in the past. It'd be nice to have some in the minors and develop them, but the Brewers have shown they can find that guy.
  24. Interesting point about the money... I was just thinking that. We've heard since the Sabathia deal how tight the budget supposedly is, so I guess we'll see if that plays a role or not. If we only see 3 or 4 callups, then I think it'd be safe to assume that money was a big factor. Dumb question here, but if we call up Escobar or Gamel does that start their arby clock faster? I know in the past Weeks was called up in September, but I thought that was because he already had a 'major league' contract. Sorry to take the thread off-topic, but I'm curious as to how this works. I think it's about time Brad Nelson gets called up. If he doesn't get called up in September, it's his last season in the Milwaukee organization. I'm not saying he's going to be a stud, but he's shown he deserves a shot in the bigs.
