Why does aquiring Linebrink all of a sudden make us a playoff team? We're right there in the Wildcard and Divisional races but isn't that putting the cart before the horse? The problem with this team is that everyone seems to slump (except Braun) at the same time, then hit at the same time. Or the starting pitchers have a stretch where 3 of 5 aren't pitching well... then the bullpen... and so on. This has been a strange season to say the least. If the Brewers don't turn things around on the road they aren't going anywhere. A single reliever pitching maybe 30 innings tops isn't going to put us over the top. A single reliever that has to pitch very well to get us 2 comp picks... or the deal really sucks. I understand the whole "win now" mentality, but I just don't see it this year. We are at the start of run here, these things take time. Look at the Packers... they finally beat San Fran, then they beat Dallas, then they won it all. Yes the Tigers made a huge leap last year, but the only team in the NL with arguably similar pitching is the Padres. I have no problem aquiring talent via a trade, but it better the correct talent in the correct time. This trade just smacks of desperation to me, or a move for the sake of making a move. I like Melvin, I always have... I liked the Suppan signing at the time, I'd rather have Vargas and Estrada than Davis, I've been behind him on every move. However, I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon with this move at this time. Maybe next year after the draft my position will change, but right now I'm not sold that 20-30 innings is going to put this team over the top. The biggest problem with this team right now is that Sheets is once again on the DL, except this time the Crew really isn't able to afford not to have him. Spare the "it's not his fault he's always injured argument" as that's not my point. Yes you can just plug in Yo there for the time being, but I would have rather Yo stayed in the pen until mid August and then we had a Sheets and Yo 1-2 punch. Now we'll have just Sheets as a starting pitcher for the stretch run. Unless of course they throw the innings limit out the window for Yo... Still the bottom line is that Linebrink has to be a type A free agent or this trade will blow up on DM, that's as simple as I can put it. Saying that making the playoffs would make this a great trade is just an opinion, it's hardly fact. It's very debatable how much impact this trade will have have on the playoff hunt. That's something that only hindsight this winter will tell us. Also, as for the comments about us minor league fan that over value our prospects... that may be true, but we started the year with a stud pitcher at every level of the minor league system; Yo at AAA, Parra at AA, Inman at A+, Periard-Braddock-Jeffress at A, Seidel-Tyson-Anundsen-Bryson at R+. Due to promotions (nothing wrong with them), trades, and injuries the cupboard is pretty bare all the way down to A ball with Jeffress pitching well for his age and Periard doing well but not great. We've gone from a position of great depth to a position of "not much" by next year. Calling us short sighted because you think we have problem giving up prospects for talent leads me to believe that many people have entirely missed our point. Being short sighted is looking at this season by itself, this season is make or break... The flip side of the coin is the many people that question this deal are looking at the big picture and are looking for long term success for this franchise. Inman and Thatcher may never pan out, but 3 players all in the upper levels of the minor leagues for 20-30 innings of a pitcher seems very expensive in terms of depth for the long haul. I'm happy that Thatcher gets to chase his dream immediately, he's a fantastic story. I'm not happy with the timing of the deal, the player, or the cost to get the player. The published reports for the Texas trade that fell through really lowered my expectations for the talent it would cost to aquire a reliever. Again, for this trade to be worthwhile long term, Linebrink has to be type A free agent, while we can speculate that he will, it's hardly fact that he is at this point and time. If he is, then the Brewers have to do well with the draft, a true evaluation of this trade won't be able to happen for 2-3 years. edit. completed my thought in the final paragraph

As Pogo noted he's toolsy and is having a breakout season of sorts, but I'm not ready to jump on his bandwagon yet. I guess I would put him in my "intrigued by" catagory instead of my "excited about" catagory, if that makes any sense at all. Generally guys I'm excited about have succeeded year in and year out or are very young and putting up very solid numbers.

If someone is listed at 6', he's probably an inch to inch and a half shorter than that. Well at least it's that way in football, but may not be the case baseball now that I think about it. It's been a topic of discussion on the minor league forum a couple of times now, and since many people don't read that forum, this probably came out of the blue... I never had a problem with Will, I just posted that knowing that Al and others would defend themselves in that regard.

Dye? No thanks, I think the outfield is going to be addressed in the off-season. I don't see anyone knocking the doors down for Jenkins, Mench, or Gwynn.

After 6 hours I still dislike this deal for the reasons I've gone over at length in the trade forums previously. In short, I absolutely despise trading pitching prospects for rental players. If we do in fact pull 2 first round draft picks, that's great, but they are still 3 years behind where Inman is right now. I hope Melvin has the starting pitching worked out on paper and long term we nail his plan on the head. I wonder if Parra's solidness out of the pen made Inman expendable? That's 3 young pitchers all of whom could be starters with the big league club already working out of the pen (Yo, Villy, Parra). Assuming 2 of the 3 are in the rotation next year, I wonder who goes? I think Vargas is a no brainer, Suppan has a no trade, that leave Cappy and Bush, and I think I'd rather have Bush, but I'm still on the fence. At any rate, I'm very sorry to see Thatcher and Inman go, Garrison never did much for me. Linebrink just doesn't do it for me, there are other relievers I would have rather gotten if I was giving up 3 pitchers. I hope this trade works out well, but I despise the deal on the paper. I would have thought we could have gotten more for what we gave up. Prove me wrong Doug.

I think I'm turning off the game, the last 24 hours have really beat me down in regards to the crew. Go Crew... put up a nice comeback victory please.

Because Will is only 5' 10" and Yo through 2-3 mph harder I guess. I liked them both equally well.

This trade stinks in my opinion. I've previously posted my thoughts about trading young pitching for a rental player, and this really irks me. I'm so bitter I don't care to get into the whole longterm value arguement right now.

That's sort of half true, and only because he doesn't hit for power. I say again putting the power issue aside, what's not to like about him?

I'm so disappointed right now as I just read through the entire thread before posting. I guess the best way I can put my feelings right now is that I feel like I would had Yo! got hit by a car last year. Catcher has been such a huge void in the system... he's mashing... I keep wondering if this is somehow related to the ankle injury. Well Lou, get on it and start raking again. Lucroy will also be interesting to watch. I'm seriously the most devestated I've ever been by the loss of of a prospect, although it's very temporary.

He's pitching differently than he did in Nashville for some reason. It's not like he's missing close, he's missing by quite a bit, and his pitch selection has left something to be desired. I was very wrong about him so far, I thought he'd keep pounding the zone... but it's tough to pound the zone when you aren't able to locate your best pitch.

Nelson may very well up like Dillon... once the light goes on and he puts his hitting tools together he could be something. Then again, he very well may never put it together. Anytime he's gotten hot in the last 3 years I thought he was on the verge of breaking out, and I've been wrong every time. Thankfully I kept my opinions to myself.

I'll listen/watch to an Al Micheals or Bob Costas game any chance I get. As others have said, they are by far the most underrated broadcasters of this ERA in my opinion. They make logical well thought out arguements, stand by their opinions, and generally let the game speak for itself. I really enjoy Costas, I started watching his show just because I've always enjoyed everything he's done in past. I was pretty indifferent to Micheals as I was very young until, "Do you believe in miracles? YES!"... he had me at hello... That is first sports broadcasting memory, I remember everything about the end of that hockey game. Every time I watch the HBO documentary on the hockey team or the movie I get that same chill up and down my spine. Normally those things where off over time, but not in this case, he just framed the moment so perfectly. I'm a pretty loyal guy, if an announcer grabs me, I'm on the bandwagon for life. It was a sad day for me when Jackson quit doing college football games. On the Hockey note, the Thorne and Clement team were great to listen to, and isn't Clement now doing some baseball? The first memory of Uke that stands out to me is the '82 playoffs, the next was the homerun call on Easter Sunday for team streak. I remember the people in the car ahead of us going crazy like we were so we knew they were listening to the game as well.

I caught yesterday's game on 386 as well, my second Brewer game in HD! I probably sound like a geek, but I was pretty pleased with things.

Yep, it's all home movie footage. They were running the first one last week, now 3 is on this week. The most amazing thing I remember from the episode is Costas is talking about a 16 inning game he went to when both 2 pitchers actually pitched all 16 innings. I forgot who the pitchers were, but I remember one was pretty old.

I was at the game last night watching the horrible pitching performances by everyone but Shouse and Parra (4 ABs, 4 Ks... pretty impressive). However I bet I missed at least every 4th pitch during the game because people were constantly getting up in the middle of the game. I've noticed this more and more over the last couple of years, but what happened to waiting for the time between innings or at least between pitches to get up and out of your seat? Why is it acceptable to constantly be up and moving around blocking other people's view while there is action on the field? It wasn't just one group of fans, it was amost everyone in the 5-6 rows immediately in front of us. Up and Down, up and down, all game long... it really got on my nerves last night, enough so that I needed to vent. Have I just been unlucky at my last 10 or so Brewer games or is this becoming the norm? We have season tickets to Badger football games but the section is full of regulars and we've never had a problem with people there.

That's really too bad, I always liked him. I wonder if this will force the Cards to be more active aquiring starting pitching over the winter.

I was really hoping to get to see him pitch today. Ahh well... before the injuries what was not to like about Parra? If you can look past his injury history and just evaluate what he's done this year, what's not to like? If, and yes I know his history doesn't bode well for the future, but if he's healthy, he'll be pretty good. If he ends up the #3 starter on this team behind Sheets and Yo next year... again what's not to like?

Nashville with a nice comeback... It's worth noting that Anderson and Nix now have exactly the same BA, while Anderson has a slightly higher OBP but much less SLG. Huntsville with an excellent pitching performance thus far, no Brantley today though... Katin and Sollman with a nice day, the middle infield duo not so much. No BC today. WV losing late, Periard with a forgettable outing by the organization's pitching standard this year. Maybe if I had gotten proper contacts earlier I could have hit LeFave, geez. Helena just keeps on rollin... the usual suspects all mashing. 3 Idaho errors have helped tremendously. Hand has impressive secondary numbers except for his K:BB ratio.
