    Three thoughts: 1. Manny's pitch count is not looking good for a game. Need a couple of quick innings. 2. Most impressive so far is if you click on Away Outs on Gameday. Manny could be pitching in a softball field today and the Giants would still be scoreless. 3. I think Manny is protesting the Extra Innings blackout. He knows if he keeps this up we will get to see the end at 2:30 on Fox if it goes that long.

    So.. Manny not pressure with your first start of the year so we are going to make you get 30 outs instead of 27.. Where is Paciorek and Yount when you need them..

    since my prediction for back to back HR's before was way off.. I am predicting back to back looking K's for Fielder and Braun this time..

    I agree this is a fundamental viewpoint argument like if you are liberal or conservative that nobody gives in on... interesting thing though, if you are superstitious you didn't want anyone to say anything but now that it was done you want him to mention every inning in case not saying it is a jinx... what a conundrum... My position is that it is a baseball tradition (like rally caps) that any sane person knows doesn't make any difference but as baseball fans we should respect longstanding traditions so others can enjoy them even if we don't agree...

    I predict at least 2 more runs off Lilly the third time through the lineup.

    With the unbalanced schedule it is almost impossible to be a 2 pitch starter because the other teams in the division see you so often. Probably had something to do with the late season fade last year so anything our pitchers can do to expand their repetoire is appreciated.

    Yes.. as an applied math major I understand you can use stats to show anything.. my point is that 2005 through mid 2006 Cappy versus mid 2006 through 2007/Spring Training Cappy has been two different pitchers when watching them. I think the best thing is send him to AAA and let him regain the confidence and them come back up in May / June / July when the inevitable injuries hit.

    You could add Sheets annual attempt to become a 3 pitch pitcher. The one thing missing is what has Cappy changed? It seems the competition has helped everybody improve so far but him. I am rooting for him but I think he will start out in the minors and then Parra or Villy will join him when Yo gets back. They won't start the season with 3 youngsters in the rotation.

    This is a more succint way of stating my original argument. I don't think trading Suppan diminishes our ability to win this year with the depth currently there and it enhances the ability to win the next two years by freeing up $30 million in payroll. So if he has a no trade for 8 teams who would that be? Let's say it is: Rays Rockies Reds Rangers Orioles Blue Jays Twins Pirates Obviously his list is very different but no matter what his list is unless it is all high revenue teams the no trade probably doesn't dramatically impact the ability to move him.

    A mentally tough head case? My head is spinning just trying to think about that. Yes... that is why I have been so shocked by what has happened to him over the year and a half... with Turnbow you can see it coming but I thought Cappy was the second coming of Tom Glavine and then he has just fallen apart.

    Yes but what we are paying Bush, Capuano, and Vargas doesn't equal total what Suppan is getting. No to mention the next 2 years. I will make a prediction that at least 1 of those 3 has a better year than him this year and I think 2 of the 3 will though maybe not with the Brewers. Last Year's rotation would have been: Sheets Capuano Bush Vargas Villenueva With Parra and Gallardo at AAA to fill in. Also without Villy in the bullpen maybe Thatcher gets called up and we never make the mistake of trading him and also would have been another draft pick last June without the signing. In the interest of full disclosure I was not adamant against it and Suppan did perform up to my expectations as low as they were I just feel he has the more value for some other team than the Brewers and he would free up a spot in the rotation and money in the future if you could get around the not trade.

    Yes you are right.. I meant to put Mota (No Juice) and Torres (Age).. my 3 year old was talking as I was typing. For Capuano I put head case because to me he always seemed mentally tough and just lost it with big innings last year.

    One way to look at this as well is who are the candidates to most improve versus fall off the table: Most Improve: 1. Villy 2. Parray 3. Gallardo 4. Turnbow 5. Cappy 6. Vargas 7. Bush Most Risky to Implode: 1. Shouse (Age) 2. Gagne (No Juice) 3. T-Bow (Head Case) 4. Suppan (Age) 5. Mota (Age) 6. Torres (No Juice) 7. Cappy (Head Case)

    I agree that in the market his contract was in line with what those other pitchers got. However, in hindsight would you do the deal again? I would say at this point no I would prefer to have the money for the young players as we seem to have plenty of starters would can give us average starts as he will put up. We are not the Yankees, $10 million for a good #5 starter doesn't cut it. However, I think he does have value for a team that needs stability or wants to get a good #5 so I would rather dump him now then take a chance he ends up with a 5.00 era and we can't pay anyone to take him at the end of the year. Unless you are Roger Clemens or Jamie Moyer you don't get better as you get to his age.

    Thanks not sure how I missed that... So we overpaid him $3 - $4 million for 1 or 2 years to many and gave him a limited no trade? I understand they didn't have a clear picture of Yo, Villy, and Parra before last year but wow where they a little desperate. Not as big of deal this year but that $10 million would look nice in 2009 and 2010 when Sheets walks out the door and we struggle to sign all the you guys in arbitration.

    I know there has been alot of talk about who gets in the rotation between (Vargas, Bush, Capuano, Villy, and Parra) but why has there been not pursuing a Suppan trade. Let's face it the only reason he is guaranteed a starting spot is that fact we are paying him $10million a year for the next 3. However, I think he was a mild disappointment last year. For the money he was a major disappointment but I thought he was overpaid when he signed and this year has not exactly looked like is will live up to the paycheck. However, as a veteran who will give you 200+ innings and world series experience you would think he would have some value for a team like the Rays or Twins that could use some stability in their rotations. If you can remove him from the equation (even if you have to eat a couple of million to do it) you open up another spot and give you self 7 - 10 million the next couple of years to pay the young studs or attempt to re-sign sheets. I don't like trading Cappy when his value is so low or Bush who I think is a perfect #5 pitcher so I would rather see Suppan and Vargas (while he is looking good) go. If you did that you could start the season with: Sheets Villy Cappy Bush Parra and then Yo is ready you can send Parra down to save innings or demote Cappy or Bush if they haven't picked it up after 3 or 4 starts and you still are covered if a major injury hits.

    Don't you think part of the problem is that the Brewers starting lineup is pretty set? I would think most times would be looking to trade surplus for surplus but except for a catcher the Brewers are pretty set.... Usually don't see prospects traded until mid-summer. The upside is we have 3 young pitchers that should not pitch 200 innings this year (Parra, Yo, Villy) so if Vargas/Capuano/Bush take some early season starts until a June trade then maybe we can have the youngsters fresh for September/October and not burn them out for next year. Yo is already a concern based on last year. With all the relievers they signed I am not sure where you put them because ideally your starters would be: Sheets Suppan Villy Capuano Bush Bullpen: Torres Mota Riske Vargas Turnbow Shouse Gagne Parra - AAA Yo - 15 DL / Couple of Rehab Starts Then try to dump one of Vargas/Bush/Capuano by May 1st and insert Yo and then dump another by end of June and bring up Parra. Of course in the event of injuries you are covered and even after the above scenario you still have 1 of the 3 stooges left if there is a rotation injury so you are covered. Gagne

    I guess I just look at it as they could bring some experience to help the kids out and with the AL East you need a deep staff... Cappy / Bush would be a good bridge for them to get to the young kids. Also the Brewers would probably be willing to take lower level prospects than other teams..

    Doesn't Tampa make the most sense for 2-3 of our starters (Bush, Capuano, Vargas)? They are loaded in the minors and obviously need pitching. Plus they play in the AL so little chance of the players coming back and burning us. I would keep one of the 3 above but trade the others and we still would have pitching depth.

    I am assuming he is getting by right now by staring at his bank account a lot. Seriously he is probably steamed inside (as I am sure is Mench) but what can he do.. That is the least of my worries considering both Mench and him are gone next year... Let's see a blowout so we can have a Laynce Nix sighting.
