  1. Big "mea culpa" on my part. I thought this was a new thread.
  2. Have you followed him recently? Nilihism is correct - something has definitely "clicked". He has a 2.41 ERA in his last 6 starts with almost a K per inning. If Bailey was going to be traded, it would have been last winter. With his recent promise breaking through, I would imagine the Reds are pretty exciting about Cueto, Volquez and Bailey for the next few years...
  3. That's why I'm keeping Randolph as my bench coach. I don't think Duncan will leave St. Louis for another pitching coach job. But if someone offered him manager - he would have to seriously consider it.
  4. This would be a positive step. But I'd prefer to fire Macha and hire Dave Duncan as manager.
  5. The bad news is Garfield and Dystra did not make the list... In most years, a second-round pedigree would mean automatic entry on our Pioneer League Top 20, but that wasn't the case this summer. Helena second baseman Cutter Dykstra and catcher Cameron Garfield, Ogden outfielder Blake Smith and Missoula righthander Eric Smith all missed the cut. Dykstra was a 2008 pick who had shifted from center field, while the other three were 2009 selections.
  6. I actually started this thread to ensure that he could avoid a lifetime ban by being added by the 40 man roster. (Sounds like that is the case) With that in mind, my main concern was Jeffress' trade value. I doubt he will make it as a Brewers. However, we always hear how the Brewers can't make a trade for a top-flight starter because we don't have the pitching prospects to part with. I think Jeffress might be a very important cog in our off-season plans. In the Hardy Trade thread I suggested parting with Hardy, Gamel, Salome and Jeffress for Felix Hernadez. After that suggestion, I realized I had no idea what trade value Jeffress might have.
  7. That is ridiculous. The Brewers can clearly monitor/test him internally without subjecting him to a lifetime ban. Adding him to the 40-man roster isn't a promotion. He would still pitching and develop his skills in the minor leagues. It's really only a paper transactions.
  8. Endaround - You've been banging that "Bedard" drum incorrectly for some time now. Bedard was originally thought to be out for the season. He was going to have a minor arthoscopic surgey in his shoulder. There was a very small chance he could return for the current season. The official results came out recently, and it appears that Bedard could very well be available for Spring Training. (Link) You might not want to count on him - but he is certainly a candidate. "Dr. Lewis Yocum performed arthroscopic surgery on Erik Bedard's left shoulder today, Friday, September 26. During the surgery Dr. Yocum removed a cyst from the shoulder and performed a minor labral debridement. "The arthroscopic procedure revealed that there are no tears in the left shoulder, in either the labrum or the rotator cuff. "The surgery report is very good news," Mariners Vice President & General Manager Lee Pelekoudas said. "There are no structural issues with the shoulder, which should allow for a positive timetable on Erik's full recovery." "Recovery time from this type of procedure is approximately six months. A better timetable will be available once rehabilitation begins."
  9. I said *as* important. His slugging increase over Kendall probably off-sets his lower OBP thanks to batting in front of the pitcher. Of course, Molina is really slow - so you would have to deal with a lot of his double plays.
  10. To be fair, if you are batting 8th - OBP isn't as important. The pitcher probably isn't going to drive him in anyways...
  11. I'm not saying the Brewers might not bring Kendall back - but they won't offer him arbitration. If they do offer him anything, it will likely be similar to Counsell this past year. (Let him test the market, then maybe bring him back for 1 million)
  12. If you ignore that fact that Jeffress could be suspended for life (which can be avoided by adding to the 40 man roster), Jeffress is still a very high ceiling prospect. I doubt he will ever make it with Milwaukee - but for a team like Toronto that needs a pitcher in return for Roy Halladay, Jeffress is very legitimate trade bait. Jeffress is very unlikely to be a major player in a trade - but he could be that "pitching prospect" that all of the other teams are searching for...
  13. So everyone is pretty much ignoring the most important part of my post? Is he is added to the 40-man roster, I believe he will never be tested for pot again. There are plenty of NBA players who have admitted to smoking weed. While Jeffress may be dumb - it doesn't mean he can't be a legitimate prospect.
  14. As the author mentions, no way do the Brewers offer Kendall arbitration. Kendall will be lucky to be playing baseball next season. He surely isn't going to see a $3M contract ever again...
  15. Please correct me if I am wrong - Jeremy Jeffress has never been on the 40 man roster. Therefore, he has been subject to the MiLB testing - which currently tests for "drugs of abuse". If he was added to the 40 man roster, I believe he would be subject to MLB testing - which does not test for "drugs of abuse". If that is correct, surely the Brewers would add Jeffress to their 40 man roster to prevent a lifetime ban. (Even if it does set a poor presedent, they can always monitor him internally.) My point is, that Jeremy Jeffress would be very unlikely to ever receive a lifetime ban - meaning the only thing he has really lost thus far is development time. I only bring this up because I am curious about his trade value. If I was another team, he would be a great "buy low" candidate. In the trade forum, I was told he had little or no value. I would think any team that acquires him at least has to recognize his potential to be a #1 pitcher. In the trade forum, there is a suggestion that we target Brett Myers. Brett Myers is a known jerk and wife beater. Jeremy Jeffress is just a stupid kid who smokes weed. Jeffress couldn't be completely worthless at this point - could he?
  16. Could Hardy be packaged for King Felix? It sounds like Seattle knows King Felix isn't going to be around by the time they turn the corner - and will look to trade him this off-season. While Seattle would certainly like Escobar more than Hardy, Hardy could play for two years and net them two draft picks in the future. Hardy, Salome, Gamel and Jeffress for Felix Hernandez? Hardy gives them a very good shortstop and two picks when he leaves. Salome is somewhat expendable if you believe in Lucroy. Jeffress gives them a top-flight pitching prospect - ceiling wise at least. (Can he be traded while suspended as a PTBNL?) And Gamel gives them a top-flight prospect, but would require a lot of faith in Casey McGahee.
  17. Do you get paid in to be at the Fall Instructional League? Maybe Maldonado just had nothing better to do - you need lots of catchers for all of those pitchers...
  18. I would say 2011 has significantly more importance that 2010.
  19. Lawrie didn't earn a promotion to Huntsville. He was bumped for a week or two to see some advanced pitching before heading over to play the World Cup with Canada. Eric Farris played 2B in Brevard County this year. He stole 70 bases. He batted .298. Farris is going to receive a well deserved bump to AA Huntsville while Lawrie still has to prove his worth in A+.
  20. Casey McGahee is very likely over achieving. However, having him as a .780ish OPS who can back up 3B, 2B, 1B and catcher in a pinch is very valuable at his salary. The Brewers need to explore trading Hardy, Hart and McGahee in the offseason. They will also likely listen to offers on Gamel. Lastly, they have difficult decisions to make on Lopez, Cameron and Hoffman. (Because Kendall is an easy decision) This might be the most exciting off-season for the Brewers during my life-time.
  21. So next year you expect Lawrie to complete Brevard County, Huntsville and Nashville so that he is ready by 2011? I'd say there is about a 5% chance Lawrie is on the Brewers opening day 2011.
  22. Thanks HTR... Fun to read the Baltimore responses. (I'd do that trade as well)
  23. The Brewers are very well lined up to make a run to the World Series in 2011 with Prince Fielder. Without him, "next year" might go on forever.
  24. How creepy is that? Gross. Huntsville wins 4-2. Great showing by Butler.
  25. Mat Gamel raked at Brevard County a few years back. He had an .850 OPS. This year, the top OPS in the FSL was .824. So Logan's .809 was very good. Brevard County and the entire FSL suppress offensive numbers significantly.
