  1. And I'd argue it's foresight and scouting...not luck. Just a bit of foresight. Bargain priced bullpen level talent over the course of 60-90 innings is going to be more effected by luck than foresight and scouting.
  2. Tampa (No Bay) Its the Tampa Bay Rays The Rays have been lucky that their bullpen has panned out. Some "cheap" options work and some don't.
  3. I want DM to spend money on the truly talented players. ummm, yeah? If this is how we are going to critisize GMs, there isn't one in the league that deserves to keep their job. Every GM has spent money on a bad player.
  4. Suppan 12.5 Million (-$1.3) Cameron 10M (750,000 buyout) ($12.4) Hall 6.8M ($0.9) Hoffman 6M (50,000 for allstar 200,000 for games finished escalator) ($4.3) Kendall 5M ($1.9) Looper 4.75M (-$1.6) Riske 4.25 M ($0) The dollar amount in parenthesis are the value based on WAR over the season so far (a little over a half). Cameron and Hoffman has been great values. Suppan and Hall, not so much. Looper hasn't done well, but his performance hasn't hurt us (we win more games that he loses). Kendall is just a hair below his salary. Riske gets a pass for me for an injury.
  5. This lineup would be a lineup of 5 players that are either rookies or players changing positions... I just don't see that happening.
  6. A virtual certainty? Neither McGehee or Gamel has played a game in the OF in their professional careers. Neither has Weeks for that matter, and he seemed to be making great strides at 2B this year. Not that I put much into this, but Melvin did say earlier this year that they will not be changing player's positions in the majors anymore.
  7. Looks like we are pushing the over.... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. Melvin wanted to resign Branyan. Branyan didn't want to stay because he knew he wouldn't be a starter here. There sure was a lot of support for Bill hall back in 2007, the year he signed his contract... http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=9614?page=1
  9. I think almost everyone on the board agrees that signing Suppan was a mistake. That is ONE move. Can we expect Melvin to make the right move every time? No. I will say this though... Suppan for the most part has been what he was brought here for, to be a stable presence in the rotation. In 2007, he made $6.3 Million, and had a value of $10.9. In 2008, he made 8.3, and had a value of -$0.4. So far in 2009, he has had a -$1.3 value. Yes, Suppan has been bad, but given that bad decision, he's done very well.
  10. If you go pitcher by pitcher, the phillies and brewers have very similar staffs. Hamels/Gallardo Moyer/Suppan Blanton/Looper Happ/Parra Myers/Bush Other than taking Hamels over Gallardo, there isn't one definitive pick of pitchers.
  11. I agree that it is a risk to expect 2 young pitchers to carry the staff, but as has been stated before (or in another thread), there weren't many pitchers that the Brewers could get besides CC and Looper (who they did sign). There just wasn't that much available this offseason that the Brewers could legitimately compete for. For what it's worth... Phillies Joe Blanton - 4.24 ERA, 4.55 FIP Cole Hamels - 4.72 ERA, 3.90 FIP Jamie Moyer - 5.58 ERA, 5.49 FIP Brett Myers - 4.66 ERA, 6.20 FIP J.A. Happ - 2.68 ERA, 4.36 FIP Brewers Yovanni Gallardo - 3.28 ERA, 3.97 FIP Jeff Suppan - 4.71 ERA, 5.59 FIP Braden Looper - 4.64 ERA, 5.64 FIP Manny Parra - 6.37 ERA, 4.58 FIP Dave Bush - 5.67 ERA, 5.81 FIP The Phillies staff is not that much better than the Brewers and they are the clear favorites to win the division, and they won the WS last year. With the offense the Brewers have, a great rotation isn't a necessity, just one that keeps them in the game.
  12. To be fair though he did offer Lee a very sizable contract This is true, however, there were many fans that still felt he should have offered more. I remember there being a lot of backlash when he was traded away. You are right on Cordero, I forgot about that fiasco. I'm still glad he wasn't signed.
  13. I also like some of the moves he hasn't made... Trading Carlos Lee instead of signing him to a huge deal. Not giving into Fransisco Cordero's contract demands.
  14. you couldn't expect Gallardo and Parra to carry an otherwise mediocre rotation all year. I think Bush was expected to be in there an put up an ERA in the low 4s.
  15. I agree with Macha, but as you can see from the thread I started, I just don't get this Fire Doug Melvin idea.
  16. Balfour - Traded for Seth McClung, who has been one of the most stable, and useful members of the pitching staff. BP for BP anyways, so meh. Gwynn - Don't get me started on Gwynn, we got a useful player in Gerut but Macha refuses to use him. Gwynn himself would never be more than a 4th OF on a contending team. Cruz - He was 27 years old before he even had a decent Major league campaign. Melvin was in a tough position that season. He knew he had to get rid of Carlos Lee, but wanted to get major league talent in return because we were making a run at the playoffs. Texas demanded Cruz in return. They made a good move, but the Brewers got a great closer in Cordero and a servicable OF in Mench. Eveland - Eveland just got DFA'd by the Oakland A's, who if it weren't for the Nats, would be the worst team in the league. With the exception of Cruz (who would still be our 4th OF at this point), none of those players would have contributed much to a playoff run.
  17. Is he that much better than Looper? That is what we are comparing against. You might say yes, but before the season started, who would you have rather had?
  18. They offered CC Sabathia 20 Million dollars a year. They also signed the all time saves leader, who happened to be an all star this year.
  19. Why has there been so much ill will towards Doug Melvin lately? I am really curious? Didn't this guy just make the biggest trade in franchise history a year ago which brought the brewers to the playoffs for the first time in 26 years??? I really want to know what people expect of him. What would you have done differently? Edit by cc: clarified thread title
  20. The only reason I don't see Hart being traded is because then there are two OF spots to fill. I think Hart is a Brewer for one more season.
  21. What should he have done differently? He should have not gotten us to the playoffs obviously....
  22. Brewblue comes into this board swinging! Poor ole DM, I still support you and always will. Best thing that has happened to the Brewers in many many years. Anyways... in regards to this thread. C - Angel Salome 1B - Prince Fielder 2B - Rickie Weeks SS - Alcides Escobar 3B - Mat Gamel LF - Ryan Braun CF - Mike Cameron RF - Corey Hart Bench - Mike Rivera Bench - Casey McGehee Bench - Jody Gerut Bench - Bill Hall (ugh...) Bench - FA SP - Yovanni Gallardo SP - Dave Bush SP - Manny Parra SP - Jeff Suppan SP - Chris Cody/Tim Dillard RP - David Riske RP - Carlos Villanueva RP - Mitch Stetter RP - Mark Difelice RP - RJ Swindle RP - Tim Dillard/Chris Cody Closer - FA Of course those FAs could change based on what Hardy is able to get, but I really see him being traded this offseason.
  23. If i HAD to trade one (which i would not do) it would be Escobar. Its a lot easier to find an above average fielder with an average to below average bat than an above average bat in general (regardless of defense). why not keep both and pray you can deal hardy If Melvin wanted to, it would not be hard to trade Hardy. He has a lot of value.
  24. I'm going to re open this thread in 3 weeks when the brewers are back in first http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  25. I think it's time to play for next season. They are three games out and have the most runs scored in the division. I'm not sure why you are ready to pack it in.
