  1. I guess i shouldn't have said Looper is our #2, he is our defacto #2 because Bush has been hurt. But the Brewers seem to win when he pitches, so I can't really complain. (13-7 when Looper Starts)
  2. there seems to be an excuse for DM for every time of year. Has any team made a big trade for starting pitching yet? It is obviously at a premium. You can't blame Melvin if there aren't any fair deals out there. Would you want to overpay to get a #2 like Davis? Sure, every GM is going to make some bad decisions, but Melvin has steered this team in the right direction. Gallardo/Looper has been a solid "1-2 punch" this year. We have lost our pre season #2 in Bush, and Parra has had his issues but seems to be turning it around. The only reason there is a need for a starter at this point is the fact that Bush's future this season is uncertain.
  3. Buster Olney talks about the possibility of Justin Duchscherer being an option for teams needing pitching. I think this is a fantastic idea and Melvin needs to be on the phone immediately with the A's to see what it could take to get him. Melvin has a history with Duchscherer so he should know what ability he has. Here is the link to Olney's blog. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=olney_buster
  4. I really think that the brewers have put themselves in a good position to compete for the playoffs for many years to come. That's all it takes to compete for the World Series.
  5. Why are we letting Bill Hall handcuff our team any longer? He is serving ZERO purpose on the team at this point. I don't care about his salary, we are paying it to sit our our bench, why don't we just pay hit to bring down a different team? He needs to go.
  6. Typo: I meant "You were not going to DFA your backup SS to keep Gamel on the bench.". I know... I'm saying what should have happened was do the trade, DFA Hall. Start Gamel and keep McGehee in against LHP. Counsell subs at 2B/SS.
  7. Since I think our window to have a legitimate chance to win a World Series is probably this season and the next couple years, Mat Gamel, Alcides Escobar, Brett Lawrie, Angel Salome, Eric Arnett, Zach Braddock, and Wily Peralta would like to disagree. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. Gamel vs. Counsell doesn't matter. You were going to DFA your backup SS to keep Gamel on the bench. Hall should not be the backup SS...
  9. Counsell has a better average, OBP and slugging % than Gamel. As a Starter - Counsell 257 PAs, .285/.352/.425/.777 As a Starter - Gamel 112 PAs, .253/.330/.434/.765 Very similar stats. If you take out Gamel's time as a DH (games he plays the field). As a 3B - Gamel 85 PAs, .267/.341/.493/.835 Is it possible that Gamel is just not a polished enough hitter to come in off the bench not being engrossed in the game? Perhaps Are 112 or 85 plate appearances enough to prove or disprove this fact? Absolutely not. Those 112 PAs are also not enough to prove that Gamel is NOT ready to hit in the majors. The fact of the matter is this, Gamel needs to play everyday, whether it be in the Majors or in the Minors. I think he should be playing everyday (or at least in a platoon with McGehee) in the Majors, but to say that Counsell is the better option seems pretty out there to me. At his worst, Gamel would match Counsell's production at the plate. Lopez Hardy Braun Fielder Cameron Gamel Hart Kendall Pitcher looks much better to me than... Lopez Counsell Braun Fielder Cameron Hart Hardy Kendall Pitcher
  10. Ken Macha... oh wait, this is an off topic thread.
  11. I've spent a great deal of my time on this thread discussing Gamel and not Lopez. I think Lopez is a solid pick up and we didn't really give up much to get him. Could we have used Cole and Roque to pick up some other player (a pitcher?).... maybe. But we don't know what deals are out there and what other GMs are asking for. What this does do is gives us an every day 2B and leadoff hitter. Will he produce more than our current tandem at 2nd, probably not, but he will give more rest to those guys who are already ailing. As I have said in previous posts on this thread, I am not happy that this has to led to Gamel being sent down, but I am glad that he is getting regular playing time now. It is what it is, it may not help the team currently, but it helps in terms of depth and keeping our players fresh. If we get a sandwich pick out of the deal, even better yet.
  12. Gamel's Splits As 3B 23 G, 85 PAs, .267/.341/.493/.835 As DH 6 G, 27 PAs, .208/.296/.250/.546 As PH 19 G, 19 PAs, .143/.368/.214/.583 I know this is a small sample, but its just as legit of a sample size as his whole season thus far. From May 22 to June 21st Gamel had played in 27 games - in 19 of those he had 3 or more plate appearances. 18 hits in 75 at bats, 28 k's, 7 walks and 1 HR. Sure that isn't every day, but that is playing quite a bit and he simply did not perform. He had 15 starts at 3B over that time. Since June 22nd, he has had 8 starts at 3B (23 team games).
  13. I don't think there is one person on this board that thinks Gamel was doing great. Even those of us who are people that think he should be starting. However, I don't understand how you guys keep saying he needs more seasoning at AAA, he's striking out too much, he looks lost, etc. My point is that he needs to play more than 1 or 2 times a week to get into any sort of a groove at the plate. Gamel has never been a bench player, from pee wee to now, and to throw him in there and expect him to be OPSing .850 as a spot starter and pinch hitter is a little ridiculous. Gamel has shown he can hit minor league hitting. In the games he played, he looked solid in the field. I think he is our best 3B option, even with Lopez in there. McGehee and Counsell make great backups, but Gamel is the guy, both now and for the future.
  14. Does this Gamel Discussion need a separate thread? I don't want to make one then have it closed.
  15. How can you know more about this abilities to play major league ball through 119 ab's in AAA than you can in 115 ab's in the majors? And I'm not the one arguing that his PAs in the majors have been bad. I think he's looked good enough in the Majors to get more playing time.
  16. I just have a very hard time making any judgements on Gamel at a major league level based off of his playing time because it was so inconsistent. I know that he has a significant number ABs and Pitches seen, but he never was given a few weeks in a row of starts to just get comfortable. I hope he goes down to AAA, gets some everyday time, and comes back up to add some value to this team.
  17. I don't know how much someone proved in 115 total ab's. I totally agree. But 1829 ABs in the minors is a pretty solid sample. I don't need to rattle off his stats, but when he is OPSing over 1.000 in AAA, he is ready to at least be given a chance to start at a major league level. That was never an opportunity given to him.
  18. Could it be we'll see Gamel roaming the outfield in Nashville the rest of the year? Has Gamel done anything this year to make us think he can't play 3B?
  19. I see a lot of people saying Gamel struggled while up in Milwaukee. For the most part, I agree with this. What did not struggle (and what most of us were worried about) was his glove. It was actually better than I even expected (and I wasn't as down on it as most were). Its very hard to be a consistent hitter when you've been playing full time your entire career and then all of a sudden is relegated to 1-2 starts per week... if that! I understand that there were times that Macha wanted to play the hot hand with McGehee and Counsell, but given Gamel's proven ability to hit the ball, he should have been given some more chances. He wasn't even always the first PH off the bench (this I will never understand). I think that Gamel started looking at too many pitches lately, but this could be due to the fact that he just wasn't seeing much realtime pitching and he was having trouble recognizing pitches. A .743 OPS from a rookie getting inconsistent playing time is pretty darn good. I want to thank Gamel for his contributions so far this year, and hope to see him again soon. BTW... welcome to the team Felipe. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. Lopez Cameron Braun Fielder McGehee Hart Hardy Pitcher Kendall OR Lopez Cameron Braun Fielder Hart Hardy Counsell Pitcher Kendall
  21. We should also remember that the ball park in SD suits TGJ's game much better than Miller Park did.
  22. That's pretty good if we've gotten to the point that we are now complaining about production from our 5th outfielder... TGJ's Career Minor League Line 2697 PAs, .275/.349/.345/.694 Gerut's Career Major League Line 1785 PAs, .263/.327/.434/.762 I'll take a guy with the higher OPS in the majors over a significant amount of PAs any day of the week and twice on sundays.
  23. Oh, and he won't make an eight figure salary until 2014. ...drools..........................
  24. I'm not sure what to expect but I figured I'd open a thread and see what you guys know. I'm spending a couple weeks in Calhoun, Georgia, which is 20 miles away from the Rome Braves, the Single A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. I will be checking out a game or two and was wondering if there were any players that are highly rated prospects that I should look at while I'm there. They will be playing against the Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies) and the Savannah Sand Gnats (New York Mets). Again, if no one knows anything, that's fine, but I figured I'd give our brilliant minor league minds a shot. Thanks!
  25. The Brewers don't need another pitcher to go 5.2 innings and be a burden on the Bullpen. I'm very glad the Brewers didn't sign Pedro.
