  1. Someone (I think it was Haudricourt) asked RR why the flip-flop (Aoki first, Gomez second), he was kind of cryptic and said "I can't tell you some of why." He basically said Aoki will see more pitches and get on base more, but there are "little reasons he'd rather not say." Interesting.
  2. On a whim when he was first called up I started calling Juan Perez "3TO Juan". I am pretty sure I'm onto something. Unfortunately, the two outcomes a pitcher doesn't want have been prevalent this inning.
  3. It is interesting that a guy who can throw up to 103 has an average strikeout rate. The Brewers must feel like they can help him add secondary pitches to keep people off of the fastball. Either way, it should be interesting to watch.
  4. There goes Stroman. Sounds like a pretty solid pick for the Blue Jays.
  5. Backflips are apparently the new way to show your agility. Not bad for a a guy Hawkins' size. I don't know much about any of these players at this point, but I do enjoy watching the draft to learn.
  6. For me personally it depends on what's around the catcher. I love watching a guy like Henry Blanco or Pudge work behind the plate, but at the same time watching guys like Mauer and McCann hit, hit, and hit is neat, too. If your pitching staff is full of guys who bounce balls, can be a little bit wild, or aren't good at holding runners you'd want the defensive guy, provided your offense could make up for his weak bat or you're comfortable taking him out late for a pinch hitter. If you have a weak offense and a pitching staff that holds runners well and generally keeps the ball around the plate where the catcher doesn't have to do a whole lot having an offense-first guy is fine. In the case of Maldonado and Kottaras since Maldonado is the vastly superior defensive catcher I don't mind him starting the majority of games. It also allows Kottaras to give the team a quality at-bat later in the game, if needed. George is the better offensive player, but I'd guess his value off the bench plus Martin's defensive capabilities would in the long run allow for a better run differential than if it were played the other way around.
  7. That no hitter was of the Edwin Jackson variety, but it works. Against the Cardinals, I'll take anything I can get. AZBrewCrew, tomorrow is a no TV game.
  8. "Good" is relative to the current NBA. He'd be eaten alive in olden days, but in this NBA at least he can score on occasion. 12 points and 7.7 rebounds over his career per game isn't awful. He's comparable to Tim Thomas (yeah, I know, not saying much), who the Bucks paid about 40 percent more for the same production. Just trying to turn lemons into lemonade.
  9. Aramis Ramirez smiled. The Mayans must be right. Nice to see Aramis and Nyjer start to put together some good at-bats.
  10. Super Sunday lineup on a Thursday, woo! Hopefully Zack comes out and pitches well after his last outing in Arizona. Get the W and fly home riding high.
  11. Doesn't that describe about half of the guys on NBA rosters? I miss the days of the old NBA when it wasn't run down the court and jack up 18 foot jumpers with 16 seconds left on the shot clock. When Drew Gooden is starting at center for you that's just sad. He's a good player, but I like my centers to play defense, too. That said, while I'm no avid Bucks fan since I decided to chime in with snark I suppose I should contribute. The Bucks probably could benefit from drafting a big guy, but as has been said there really isn't anyone who would make an immediate impact. I liked what I saw out of Tobias Harris in limited action last year and think he may be able to contribute at the 3. It seems like the Bucks decided they were just going to try and outscore everyone once they traded for Monta, so I wouldn't be surprised if they drafted another shooter type and continued to play small lineups with a bunch of guys who can shoot.
  12. Since I walk at least 3 miles every day my legs tend to get sore. Like George Kottaras last night, I play through it. I have yet to injure my ACL (knocks on wood), although I did take a spill on St. Patrick's Day (sadly, I wasn't even drunk) which caused a nice gash on my elbow and hand.
  13. Plus, pretzel buns in the ATI Club. I highly recommend them. Corey Hart might block your view from time to time, but that's a true first world problem. The reps were really cool about mingling with fans, too. The Packers rep was allowing fans to try on his Super Bowl ring.
  14. It's a small world! It was nice to chat with you. The social media night was definitely a blast. The roundtable in the interview room was entertaining, Chris Narveson stopped by, as well as Bernie Brewer. Those chairs were quite comfortable, too! As we walked out and back to the ATI club Aramis Ramirez and Doug Melvin were in the hallway, I wasn't paying attention and almost bumped into Aramis. I spent the evening bouncing back and forth between talking to splitterpfj, talking to a couple guys to my left, and asking Cait about Yuni B's at-bat song from last year, as well as several other random questions (why no at-bat music for Aramis, I should have asked him!). I really enjoy when the Brewers put on events like this. You meet new people, kind of get an insiders look at things, and can generally have a good time, even when the game doesn't go so hot.
  15. I'm rooting for the Hart to 1B, Aoki to RF plan, but I saw last night McCalvy tweeted to someone his suspicion is they'd give Ishikawa the chance to play first.
  16. Russell Branyan isn't healthy right now, so a return of the Muscle isn't even possible. Any extended playing time for Ishikawa/Conrad is just bad news. Hopefully the recovery timetable isn't too dramatic.
  17. As I'm in bed last night listening to Uecker I hear Kotsay come up and think to myself "Well, at least he's not much of a home run threat." Whoops. That pitch from K-Rod was definitely a mistake pitch, right on a tee.
  18. Every time I see a bunt I can't help but think of the post-game tutorial Davey Nelson did about bunts a couple years ago. Barrel above the handle. Barrel above the handle. Barrel above the handle, Travis.
  19. Twitter was ablaze with Super Cena taunts after the match last night. I, too, liked the MMA feel they gave it. Cena sold well for Brock and really built him up, which is why him winning didn't really bother me all that much. I think WWE oversold the use of doctors a bit during the PPV, but they probably did that to enforce the "extreme rules" mentality. They did a decent job of foreshadowing stuff (e.g.: during the Big Show-Rhodes match they mentioned how had Rhodes put himself through the table on the disaster kick he'd have lost, only to have Show put himself through a table 5 minutes later). Bryan-Sheamus, Orton-Punk, Cena-Lesnar were all high quality matches. Even Dolph-Clay was redeemable. My meter of care for Layla coming back is at zero, but good for her.
  20. I wondered about pinch hitting Kottaras for Gonzalez while at the game, but then remembered either Ishikawa or Izturis would have to hit in the pitchers spot. I'd probably rather have Gonzalez hit than either of those guys in a tight spot, not that any of those are prime options. If there would have been two outs I have no doubt we'd have seen Kottaras hit for Gonzalez, but RR rolled the dice on Gonzalez and lost.
  21. This is just me speculating, but based on how Morgan was busting it down the line my impression was he planned to just plow the catcher if it came down to it. Once he saw the catcher was behind the plate to the third base side (and he probably caught Ramirez waving him down and to the inside of home plate) he decided to slide late, which is why the slide looked so awkward. I looked at the front angle of the play and it looked like Ellis' glove crinkled a bit as he touched Morgan. It was such a close play.
  22. I frame-by-framed it on DVR, It appears that Morgan was grazed on the buttocks for a very short period of time, right before he rolled over. There really isn't a definitive view of if the mitt ever touched his pants, but by the way his pants imprinted at contact it would appear he was out. Way closer than it should have been, though. With a good throw he's out by 10 feet. Either way, win!!
  23. I think RR has somehow confused Ishikawa with being Mark Kotsay. This makes me sad.
  24. Ditto. I tried in both Firefox and IE. Ah well.
