Missed everything after about the 2nd inning or so because we lost power here with the storm. Everything came back on just in time for Brewers Live. Looks like I need to sit in the dark every night for awhile now.

It was a double steal, with Braun moving up to second. If it was called by RR, he was probably trying to create a situation where a Fielder single scores 2 instead of 1. Not that I agree with taking that risk.

It goes back to the lean years here. Cross things off the checklist -- avoid the no-hitter, avoid the shutout, avoid the loss, etc.

Bill says you can't blame the Brewers for being aggressive early against Halladay. Can I blame them for risking stupid outs at third when the best time to get Halladay is before he settles in?

McClendon is probably good for 2 innings, with Axford and Braddock maybe being able to go one apiece. That would probably still require Wolf to get through 5 innings, unless you have another starter throw an inning on a bullpen day, but I don't know if the doubleheader screwed that schedule up. Stetter and Green haven't thrown many pitches the past two days, but they've still had to get up and get warm two days in a row.

Are we concerned about Axford yet?

I think you just described the vast majority of closers in baseball. There are very few guys who are very good from year-to-year. That's not to say we shouldn't worry about Axford a bit (especially with his minor league history), but it isn't like what we've seen through 6 innings this year is normal for Axford, either. There are a lot of things out of whack with his numbers so far (less first pitch strikes, less swinging strikes, more pitches in the zone in hitter's counts, more contact made by opponents, etc.), but most of it goes back to fastball location. If he can get the ball down regularly again, he'll be fine. I wouldn't worry about him becoming "the next Turnbow." Turnbow had control problems, too, but they were mostly psychological towards the end. Axford's are more mechanical. That's a lot easier to remedy. -
Kottaras starting could just as easily be explained by getting more lefties into the lineup and protecting Lucroy from a tough RHP. The pitching matchup obviously isn't optimal for the Brewers, but it's not like Halladay has never lost before. Who knows, maybe he won't be as sharp after throwing 123 pitches in his CG against the Nats. If the Brewers can chase him after 7, they can maybe steal another one in the late innings. Of course, they'd have to show some plate discipline to get the pitch count up over 12 an inning.

There are only two things I want to come out of this if Leake ends up making a start at Miller Park this year: someone behind home plate holding up a "Where's my wallet?" sign while he's pitching, and for him to walk up to his first AB to "Been Caught Stealing" by Jane's Addiction.

Wow, incredible strength by Braun to muscle that ball to the outfield the other way with the bat shattering into a million pieces. That's pretty impressive.

When did the Phillies replace Jimmy Rollins with Derek Jeter? Doesn't seem to have much range up the middle anymore, either.

It's not like shifting for Ryan Howard is a Roenicke thing. The entire league does it. The only time Howard hits it to left is when he homers. Tough break, but the Weeks error really hurts...he hurried it when he probably didn't have a chance at two.

Philly's lineup isn't nearly as imposing without Utley in there. I get the feeling Marcum will do well, especially if he can locate his changeup.

Long season, folks. Can't get too worked up over three or four game losing streaks...this is what an 85-win team looks like. At least Joe Blanton is starting opposite Shaun Marcum tomorrow night instead of Roy Halladay.

The Brewers are still a more talented team than the Nats at full strength, regardless of what happens in a 3 game series. If the Brewers go out in the next three days, beat Halladay and Lee, and take 2 of 3 from the Phillies it doesn't make them a better team.

Today has been a clinic on making mistake pitches at the absolute worst time. Braddock badly missed that spot to LaRoche. L-on-L matchups don't matter much when you put a 90 mph fastball there.

Big thank you to Jim Riggleman for taking Livan Hernandez out of the game, at least. The Brewers have been able to score against this bullpen so far. Good job by Braddock keeping it within reach.

At least Braddock's velocity seems to be back to where it was before that Pittsburgh outing. Calms some of the injury concerns I had.

Wow, that's a great throw by Weeks to get the out at home. Strong throw and online without getting to set his feet. Compare that to Prince's throw home on Friday night.

Morgan can't play, otherwise he likely would have started one of these games. He has big numbers in his career against both Marquis and Hernandez. The more I see Almonte in right, though, the more I think it's a possibility the Brewers keep 3 catchers even after Hart returns. Almonte has nowhere to play defensively and hasn't shown anything with the bat.

Livan is getting the 1997 NLCS strikezone again, apparently.

Estrada did a nice job of working around two defensive flubs in that first inning. If he can get through 6 again the Brewers will have a good chance in this one.
