  1. Even if he misses all of April, that's only 3 starts that need to be filled by a 5th starter. Not as big of a deal as it's going to be made out to be.
  2. I'm a Mortal Kombat fanboy myself. So of course I had to Photoshop Zach Braddock's head onto Scorpion. http://thebrewersbar.com/images/stories/pics/braddock_scorpion.png
  3. Braddock needs to come out to "Rock You Like a Hurricane" by Scorpions at least once now. There really isn't any debate here. It needs to happen.
  4. I wouldn't trust Cruz's SLG last year for the Sounds -- the PCL is very hitter-friendly. His line from last year translates into .248/.272/.352 if you use Minor League Splits' MLE calculator. His glove is good, but is it better than Escobar's was last year? Good enough to break the replacement level line if he hit that poorly over a full season? I'm not entirely convinced.
  5. Kind of a bummer that this is the game being televised and not the "real" team against San Diego, but it should be nice to see some of the young guys.
  6. Good to see, even if it likely took an injury to Tommy Hunter and an earlier out clause than Brett Tomko to make the roster. He had a solid career in Milwaukee...hopefully it isn't quite over yet.
  7. As a graduate of a CAA school, I would like to point out that only two conferences have three teams with at least 27 wins this year -- the Big East and the CAA. The CAA had six teams finish with at least 20 wins. Terribly underrated as a conference this year.
  8. Asked Nats blogger Will Yoder on Morgan's personality, and this is what he told me: Sounds similar to what Melvin was saying -- not a bad guy, just emotional and got caught up in a bad couple weeks last August and September.
  9. The move is retroactive to March 22nd, meaning Parra is eligible to return on April 6th if he's ready. Greinke's placement on the DL is also retroactive to that date, but we already know he won't be ready by then. McCalvy blog post.
  10. I can't be the only person in the world that picked UK beating Ohio State in my bracket, can I? Listening to some of the talk about the game, you'd think it was the biggest upset of the tournament.
  11. I don't think anyone's "panties are in a bunch" over this (and let's refrain from using that phrase). Those who don't like it just think that the Brewers gave up more than they had to for a replacement level spot starter/long reliever. If Dickerson wasn't going to make the team, he easily could have been optioned instead of being traded for a dime-a-dozen groundball guy. I don't think anyone is arguing this is a huge net loss for the Brewers, but it certainly looks to be a net loss nonetheless.
  12. As of now, Estrada still appears to be the favorite to make those spot starts. Sounds like Mitre will be the long man, according to Ken Rosenthal. This trade probably tells us more about the status of Manny Parra's injury than Zack Greinke's.
  13. What's awful about a 3.33 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP and holding opposing hitters to a .223 BA? That's what he did last year in the AL East. And that was on a .228 BABIP, when opponents have average a .315 BABIP against him for his career. It's highly unlikely he can repeat that. With that said, he does do some things well. He's not going to strike anyone out, but his changeup looks like a decent pitch, and he is a ground ball pitcher. I'd probably still prefer Estrada makes the necessary spot starts until Greinke gets back, though.
  14. Tom Haudricourt reports the trade is Mitre for Chris Dickerson. Well that changes things.
  15. First reported by ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. Interesting. No word on the return, but it's probably not much.
  16. See, I thought the opposite. I thought Butler was impressive, especially defensively. They effectively took Leuer out of the game early, constantly forced Jordan Taylor and others in bad shots, anved played hard from start to finish. Brad Stevens is showing that he can beat you at your own game, and Butler now has three wins over three very physical teams. Wish it would've ended differently, but there's no shame in losing to a team with more talented players and a better coach (not that I think Bo is a bad one or anything).
  17. Still catching up in this thread, but I don't think anyone denies that Kotsay will make the team. There are plenty of people, though, who think it wouldn't be the most effective use of a roster spot.
  18. Brew Crew Ball brings up the possibility of getting Jo-Jo Reyes as the still-to-be-received PTBNL from Toronto. The main reasoning is that Reyes is unlikely to make the team and is out of options, but is stretched out to start. It's a thought, although one I wouldn't be thrilled about. I suppose it could work for a couple starts, though.
  19. Narveson didn't just do well towards the end of the year again -- he was probably the second-best starter on the team last year behind Gallardo, and it wasn't even really close. He didn't have a high IP total or go much deeper than the 6th because Ken Macha always seemed to have him on a pretty strict pitch count. He did have a problem with giving up first-inning runs, but at this point I don't think we know enough to determine if it will be a problem going forward or just one of those weird one-year flukes. It didn't help that the defense hurt him more than just about any pitcher on the team...the difference between his "real" ERA and his FIP was the second-highest on the team last year behind Gallardo.
  20. I believe Rosiak has said he jumps in with both feet on Opening Day. I suppose there's a chance he joins the beat earlier if Marquette is knocked out early, but he's also probably due some time off, especially if he's taking on the baseball beat.
  21. Tough draw for Bucky. That regional is looking brutal. 30-win Belmont as a 13, Utah State as a 12, Old Dominion as an 8. Could very well have a mid-major in the Sweet 16 or even Elite Eight.
  22. Brian Anderson is out of town, according to Adam McCalvy, so Cory Provus will be doing the MLB.com webcast with Bill Schroeder today.
  23. It's incredible just how bad the Badgers are outside of the Kohl Center. Even outside of the 15-for-51 (!!) shooting, no one looked like they had a real interest in rebounding. They better hope like there's no tomorrow that they don't draw a talented mid-major in the first round, otherwise they're going to get embarrassed.
  24. I don't think Pitt ends up as a #1 after losing to UConn today. Not that it's a bad loss, just that other contenders for a 1 seed figure to play into this weekend. Kemba Walker is a beast.
