  1. Hopefully he helps Matt LaPorta fulfill his 3TO destiny. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Very solid pick-up for the Tribe...I was surprised he went unsigned for this long, but I guess a lot of teams were scared off by his back problems.
  2. I'm more interested in Sunday's USA/Canada men's hockey match up than any NHL game, but maybe that's because I'm a man without a team. The atmosphere should be insane.
  3. That's good to see, considering the problems Bush and Parra had last year and the stories about Gamel's problems showing the staff he wanted to be there last spring.
  4. They're obviously throwing games to get those first round games in Milwaukee. Yeesh...brutal showing. And stay classy, Minnesota fans.
  5. I've seen teams wear alternate caps, but I'm not sure if a different cap means it's an alternate uniform altogether. For example, I remember the Cards wearing an alternate blue cap with red brim on Sundays with no other noticeable uniform changes, but I think it may count as their alternate home uniform.
  6. I'm not a big fan of Salmons as a player, but if you can get something for Joe Alexander with Warrick thrown in, I guess it's not a bad deal. You just hope that Salmons doesn't decline his player option and leave town early, leaving you with a hole at the position again.
  7. And there was much rejoicing. I definitely dig the look, but I also wish they would've made the change in the regular road grays. I get the feeling a blue "Milwaukee" with gold trim on the gray would look pretty slick. One step at a time, though, I guess. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. Considering there might not even be room for him at Nashville if he were to sign, I don't think it's that much of a surprise. The Brewers were the only team really showing interest, and they've appeared to have moved on. I imagine either Mulder has been telling close friends (Peterson, Eric Chavez, etc) that he doesn't think he can make the comeback without telling his agent the same thing, or he's just making on last-ditch effort to drum up interest (sort of like Washburn threatening retirement). Either way, I think the Brewers are done with him, and it's probably for the better.
  9. I wouldn't mind seeing Lopez come back for a pretty cheap deal like that one, but I'd prefer to wait until Spring Training starts to see where Rickie's at in terms of shaking off the rust. I'd keep Lopez's number on speed dial if Rickie's still not feeling 100% or if he re-injures the wrist (the absolute worst case scenario). Of course, I don't think Lopez waits around that long...the Cards probably find enough money to scrape together a one year deal before that happens.
  10. Fukudome had a bad last month of the season, but looked a lot better last year than he did in his first season (he had an .842 OPS heading into September). I'll agree that their season hinges on the health of Lee and Ramirez, and that they do look like a .500ish team, but who in this division (outside of the Cardinals) doesn't look like a team that tops out at 80-82 wins?
  11. Boras also replaced Lopez with Kendry Morales, who signed on a day after he lost Lopez. Morales will be heading into arbitration next offseason and figures to get a big pay raise...I'd say Boras isn't sweating this too much. While it has been a rough offseason for Lopez, Johnny Damon, and Jarrod Washburn, Boras has been able to find new homes (or new contracts) for Rick Ankiel, Adrian Beltre, Matt Holliday, Mike Gonzalez and Xavier Nady. Just like any agent, he wins some and he loses some. I can't blame Lopez for getting antsy without a job and less than a week left before pitchers and catchers start reporting, but the second baseman market has been weak as a whole, and that's something he can't really blame Boras for.
  12. Can't wait for the short-track speedskating tonight. Those races are always similar to roller derby, and you're lucky if everyone makes it through the race standing.
  13. It's official. I'll watch anything Matty V does the play-by-play for.
  14. I felt queasy when the New York Times posted the image of him hurdling through the air (before impact) when the news first broke this afternoon. I couldn't believe NBC (repeatedly) showed it without much warning. The instances I saw on other networks (mostly ABC, both the local affiliate and the World News) at least gave the warning for jarring content. Just the way the momentum was stopped instantly..ugh. I just hope there are no more luge/skeleton/bobsled incidents on that track in the coming weeks.
  15. While this is true, I would say the most frustrating thing about it is the fact that Omar Minaya gave Frenchy $5 million after he managed to put together a good half-season with the Mets (despite a handful of subpar and downright horrible seasons after his rookie year). Of course, the system doesn't protect teams from the stupidity of other teams. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  16. It can't hurt, but I don't think he'll end up making the club. There's always the chance he pulls a Brian Shouse, though. As far as the age of this offseason's signings go, I agree that it's not on the same level the Giants were at a couple years ago. The last four JB12 mentioned (all pitchers, by the way) are really the only ones I'm expecting to do much of anything this year, and that's more an indication of the team's struggles in developing pitching than it is a problem with signing old guys to take playing time away from youngsters.
  17. Yeah, Jorge de la Rosa was pretty maddening for me because he had great stuff but never managed to put it together. I also remember being excited about Dana Eveland when he first came up -- he had a sub-3.00 ERA through his first 15 IP in 2005 -- but again, never seemed to put it together with the Brewers. From the batter's side, I wish Nelson Cruz had been able to put it together with the Brewers, but he took a long time to even do that with the Rangers so I can't get too upset about Melvin including him in the Lee trade.
  18. This team is just so much fun to watch right now. It almost feels like they could beat anyone, but hopefully a pair of very easy wins won't leave this team complacent.
  19. I think a lot of people overstate how Twins fans will react to outdoor baseball in April and September. The average night temperature for Minneapolis during those times of the year aren't much different from their division rivals Chicago and Detroit. The only way they draw 5,000 a game those nights, IMO, is if the team is one of the worst in the league (and they won't be). As far as this move goes, I really like it for the Twins. Their rotation is still pretty shaky, like Ennder said, but I still like them better than anyone else in that division.
  20. Stupid seagulls. Good for Verlander, though, and good for Tigers fans who have had a rough offseason between losing a fan favorite in Granderson, seeing their $150 million slugger check into rehab for alcoholism, and worrying that the economics of the city would make it difficult to get a deal done.
  21. Billy Beane continues to rebuild the 2007 Brewers. Maybe he'll be interested in Jeff Suppan.
  22. According to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports, Cabrera signs a 1 year deal for $3 million with the Reds, with a $3 million option for a second year. Cabrera's decision came down to Cincy and Colorado, but chose the Reds because the Rockies would have asked him to move from shortstop. Looks like a pretty solid deal for the Reds. They'd probably be better off defensively with Janish, but he can still hit a little bit and the contract is hardly a killer.
  23. I don't see this working out as well as the Kapler signing. Kapler was 32 that year, but Edmonds turns 40 this year. While the Fangraphs article makes a good point that players don't normally fall off a cliff, Edmonds is going to be a 40-year old who hasn't played Major League Baseball in a year. Considering the year off, I wonder if he'll have trouble getting his bat up to speed.
  24. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL200809060.shtml Anyway (it's an old argument that makes no sense to rehash now), no #15? http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20100126/capt.6d4f5ab821a945f99777a9104e7eab85.athletics_sheets_baseball_oas102.jpg Looks like #15 is already taken by Ryan Sweeney. He looks better in the green and gold than I thought he would, but maybe I'm just used to seeing him in navy blue.
  25. This is sad news for me, but it was also expected given everything we've heard over the past year. I am happy that he's going to a team that I have no real grudge against, and it should be a good move for Ben (and a good move for the A's). With that big ballpark, he won't have to worry as much about his flyball tendencies, and considering they play Texas in-division it will give him a chance to be closer to home more often throughout the year. I know a lot of people had negative feelings about Ben by the end of the 2008 season, but I'll always remember him as one of the best pitchers to ever wear a Brewers uniform.
