  1. The Royals let Olivo sign with Colorado for 1 year, $2.5 million and signed Jason Kendall for 2 years, $6 million. I don't know if this has to be said anymore, but if I was a Royals fan, I'd be pretty peeved with Dayton Moore. Decent enough pick up for the Rockies, and considering they just signed Iannetta to an extension, it looks like Olivo's only going to be a back up option. He'd have pretty good pop as a pinch hitter, too, if they went that route.
  2. Purdue is clearly better than the Badgers right now. I don't think you can say that until they play each other. The thing about Purdue is that as good as they look, they could easily lose to anyone in the conference on any given night if their threes aren't falling. I think the regular season title will come down to Purdue and Michigan State, but the Badgers are the type of team that could make noise in the conference tournament (again).
  3. Don't forget the Angels, who may have a leg up on other teams due to having Kendry Morales already on the squad. I have to imagine having a Cuban teammate who's had to go through the adjustments of life in America and could show him the ropes, so to speak, would be a draw. Chapman would be nice, but I can't envision any scenario where a young Cuban kid would choose Milwaukee over cities like Miami, New York, or Los Angeles, where he'd have a better chance of feeling comfortable.
  4. Wow, tough loss for Marquette at home against Villanova today. Scottie Reynolds is something else and very tough to slow down, but it's still a rough start in Big East play for Marquette.
  5. I was surprised at how bad Ohio State is without Evan Turner...what an ugly effort from them today, but I'll never complain about a blowout Big Ten win for the Badgers.
  6. My biggest memory of Marlon Byrd is his role in the worst birthday present I ever had. His newfound Cub-dom only reinforces my feelings about him. Not a bad deal for the Cubs, though -- probably a year too long, but backloading the deal probably gives them enough free cash to address another hole.
  7. Boston offered 4/$60 at the very start of the offseason, if not in the middle of season. Bay rejected the offer, basically feeling it was a low-ball offer -- he wanted 5 years all along, if I remember correctly. It's kind of funny, because the Mets' initial offer of 4/$65 was basically seen as a token "Hey fans, we're trying" offer, but as Bay sat on it no better offers came along. I guess you could say they were bidding against themselves by adding the vesting option for the 5th year, but their final offer wasn't much different than their original offer.
  8. If I'm remembering this correctly, the Mets' hope/rationalization was that Citi Field isn't that bad for a pure right-handed pull-hitter like Bay. It definitely hurt a guy like David Wright, whose power is pretty evenly distributed, but if Bay is going to homer it's most likely to left field and they're hoping the gaps won't affect him as much. Of course, defense in that stadium is going to be a problem. They better hope Beltran is able to stay healthy and is willing to cover some extra ground, because it could get ugly out there. I wouldn't be surprised to see him finish that contract at first base, honestly.
  9. Includes a vesting option that could make the deal 5 years for $80 million. Seems like a panic move for the Mets to me -- not sure how well his offense will translate to Citi Field, but they did need another bat. Link
  10. I don't think very many teams had a real chance at signing him away from Oakland. Yeah, there were reports that he had offers from a handful of teams, but it seems like he preferred to stay in a comfortable environment for another year. Considering the problems he went through last year, I don't think it's that much of a surprise. It's a very cheap deal, but it's not something many teams could have signed him for.
  11. I'm not sure why -- link via ESPN. Fuentes had his struggles last year, sure, but I'm not sure the answer is giving a guy who struggled in non-save situations last year the role of set-up man and occasional closer.
  12. A little disappointing, but I was uncomfortable with the idea of giving up a guy like Gamel for Vazquez, and it looks like the Yankees didn't really feel comfortable giving up much, either. In the end, the salary probably took the Brewers out of contention. Kind of a disappointing deal from the Atlanta standpoint, but apparently they were one of the teams that fell in love with Melky Cabrera. In the end, I'm not sure the Brewers had the pieces Atlanta would've been interested in, anyway.
  13. Merged the two threads we had on this. Hard to get worked up over moves like this (Halama, Loe, eventually Mulder, etc.)...with it looking like there isn't even enough money to sign a Doug Davis type for the last rotation spot, I guess they don't have a choice but to pencil Suppan into that last spot and sign a bunch of guys like this to see if anything sticks. You can't win the lottery if you don't buy the $5 ticket.
  14. My girlfriend has been trying to get me off Mountain Dew for awhile now (and to at least switch to something less sticky and sugary), but I'm weak and will usually buy it if the option is there at the cafeteria. On average I probably go through a couple 20 oz bottles of soda a day, on top of morning coffee. Luckily enough I haven't really had to deal with withdrawal headaches if I go a day without soda, but I have noticed I've built up a hell of a tolerance to caffeine -- I don't get much of a buzz from it anymore, but I don't want to increase the intake for fear of working myself deeper into addiction as I get older. I picked up the Mountain Dew habit from my parents, who drink it instead of alcohol. I guess in that context it's better, but it's still expensive, and with money getting tighter it's a fairly obvious expense to cut out.
  15. It definitely raises questions about whether he'll be able to pitch or not this season -- if a team like the Yankees is unwilling to pay you to rehab, I'd have my doubts. It seemed pretty likely this would happen after hearing Cashman talk about having Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes both prepare as starters this offseason, making it seem like they were willing to go with a rotation of Sabathia-Burnett-Pettitte-Chamberlain-Hughes if they don't have the money to go after Lackey or the prospects to go after Halladay. Right now it seems like the rumor mill has him going to the Dodgers, being reunited with Joe Torre.
  16. Jason Kendall produces so little power he is certified green. Surely the creative minds here can come up with some good ones, too. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  17. This is why I love Keith Law:
  18. Looks like a deal might be imminent (again) -- Jon Heyman is noting that the Mets are backing off:
  19. The Yankees like Melky as a 4th outfielder...if anything, I think this guarantees that one (if not both) of Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon are gone.
  20. The huge blockbuster has been rumored since last night, but it looks like the teams have come to an agreement. Yankees get: OF Curtis Granderson Tigers get: P Max Scherzer P Daniel Schlereth P Phil Coke OF Austin Jackson Diamondbacks get: P Edwin Jackson P Ian Kennedy The Yanks make out like bandits, getting Granderson for a reliever, an average pitching prospect, and Austin Jackson...the original deal had them including Michael Dunn, but they got the deal done without him. Detroit gets a great return for Granderson, but I don't get Arizona giving up Scherzer for Ed Jackson.
  21. For what it's worth, Wolf's FIP the past few seasons (with the "real" ERA in parentheses): 2009 - 3.96 (3.23) 2008 - 4.17 (4.30) 2007 - 3.99 (4.73) If the deal does happen, the Brewers will be getting a pretty nice pitcher -- I wouldn't call him a one year wonder or a contract year guy, as he's been very solid for a few years now. Far from being another Suppan signing, IMO.
  22. The past two years, it's not very good: 2009 vs RHP - .269/.347/.454 (216 AB) vs LHP - .217/.333/.572 (46 AB) 2008 vs RHP - .255/.347/.388 (196 AB) vs LHP - .163/.317/.245 (49 AB) To his credit, he was a lot better against lefties in 2007 and 2006, and it's not like he has a ton of ABs for us to look at. His career numbers are pretty even, but he's been around so long that his career numbers aren't exactly indicative of his current ability (sort of like Kendall being a career .300 hitter when he came here).
  23. While it's not completely official yet, it's one step past being rumor, according to AP reports. The deal likely won't be announced until Monday, when they can be sure that Adrian Beltre won't accept arbitration. Once the signing is official, the M's will have to give up the 18th overall pick to their division rivals. Not sure how I would feel about giving a 31-year old speed guy 4 years guaranteed, possibly 5 if the option vests. It has the potential to be a pretty good deal the first couple years and this is less money than a lot of people thought he was going to get, but it's still a pretty big gamble by Jack Z. He could've just gotten Mat Gamel for Felix Hernandez and saved a lot of money. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  24. You mean you're not a member of the Zaunbie Nation yet? http://www.greggzaun.com/images/img_zaunbie.jpg He's already 10 times cooler than Jason Kendall.
