  1. Brian and Bill mentioned this briefly during tonight's game, and I thought it was an interesting topic. Apparently they've installed overhead cameras at AT&T Park in San Francisco that, when used in conjunction with computer software, can help better evaluate defensive talent. The New York Times recently did an article on the new system and includes screenshots and videos of what the software looks like in action. Since most fielding metrics out there can still be controversial, it should be interesting to see what comes of this new system. With a computer program being able to peg out exact coordinates on the field, there should be less guesswork involved. I'm personally looking forward to showing data like this to Yankees fans I know to prove that Derek Jeter isn't nearly as good as they think he is. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  2. Two All-Star injuries, according to Rotoworld. Should be interesting to see who the replacements will be.
  3. I don't have much problem with it...you kind of expect every player on the team to believe that they belong there, even if fans think they don't. I thought this part did a good job showing that despite the comment about believing he's the best in the league, he knows he has work to do:
  4. I was a bit worried about the pen after the amount of innings they've had to cover the past couple days (and how they responded to that challenge), but Coffey was excellent, McClung was huge in sucking up a couple innings, and Trevor bounced back nicely from a rough outing last night. Hopefully Yo can work deep into the game tomorrow and the bullpen can get an extra day of rest during the break.
  5. I don't think anyone wants to see Burns in the rotation long-term. I think what others were getting at is that he's been serviceable as a spot starter, with only one really ugly outing. He hasn't been lighting the world on fire, but with the exception of the Cubs game, he hasn't been guaranteeing the Brewers a loss, either.
  6. This game's moving along at a snail's pace, but I do like the patience being shown so far. Burns has been pitching surprisingly well, too. I'm just sad to see Weaver make an early exit.
  7. Joe Posnanski's blog entry on this trade is pretty hilarious.
  8. According to baseball-reference, Kendall his hit into 10 double plays so far this season (doubling last year's total of 5). His double play stats from last year may have been reduced somewhat by Yost hitting Kendall 9th for a little while, but that was only a handful of games and I'd say it's pretty much impossible to figure out if that had much of an effect on his GDP totals. It's easy to point to Macha's distaste for the sac bunt, but Yost never really seemed to like bunting, either. Last year's team only had a total of 54 sacrifices (excluding sac flies, again according to b-r), and this year's team has 24 through 86 games. To me, if you project this year's sacrifices out to a full-season total, it doesn't seem like it would have that much of an effect on the double play total, but I could be wrong.
  9. I didn't have as much of a problem with Gamel hitting behind Fielder compared to someone like Cat, since both Fielder and Gamel have shown that they're able to handle left-handed pitching pretty well (Fielder in the majors this year, Gamel in his minor league career). I'd still like to see Gamel's bat in either of the top two spots of the order, but at least hitting 5th is better than hitting 7th or not at all. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. 9 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K. Only baserunner to reach was on an error in the 8th. Probably one of the better lines I've seen for a no-hitter in a long time. Certainly beats the A.J. Burnett 8-walk effort. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif First Giants no-hitter since 1976, and Sanchez was making a spot start for Randy Johnson, who's still ailing with a sore shoulder. Pretty amazing story all around, huh?
  11. Incredible catch by Rowand banging up against the wall for out number 2 in the 9th. It'd be cool to see it happen, but kind of a bummer to see the Giants win at the same time, considering their position in the wildcard race.
  12. Probably more coincidence than anything...he's been cold for awhile now, even before the comments about the pitching. Coming into tonight's game, he was hitting .265/.286/.353 (an ugly .639 OPS) in July, although that's a very small sample of only 8 games. He hasn't homered since June 25. If anything, this shows he's just as streaky as anyone else on the team. Considering how hot he was in June (1.022 OPS for the month), it probably shouldn't be a surprise. It certainly is bad timing, though, I'll say that much. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  13. Well I have to give Matt Kempt credit, that was one hell of a catch to end it. Disappointing end to this game, but I can think of a few positives: - They scored 6 runs in 9 innings against the best pitching staff in baseball (and 8 in 10) - Hardy made some solid contact and managed to drive in a couple runs - Mat Gamel's swing is so pretty I want to take it out to dinner - Bill Hall had a solid at-bat against a very tough closer - The offense didn't completely pack it in after that 6 run top half - They made Broxton throw a ton of pitches and likely eliminated any chance of him appearing tomorrow Would've been nice to get this one, but Jeff Weaver's going tomorrow for the Dodgers.
  14. Sheesh...all after he got the first out relatively easily, too. Can't expect to leave that pitch there with the bases loaded and get away with it, though.
  15. Keep it at a one run deficit and Gamel can just win it with a 2-run HR. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Villa's really been struggling with his location the past couple outings. Edit: Yep, I'm an idiot...somehow forgot Hall was in as a defensive replacement in the 9th. I'll second the Hall heroics, in that case. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Just get us to Prince, Ryan...please be patient here. Edit: *sigh* Just get it into the 10th tied now...hopefully Villa pitches better than he did yesterday.
  17. Very nice double play...you can never expect to double up Furcal. Now let's finish this and untuck the shirts on a walkoff. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  18. Hard to get on Hardy tonight, considering he's driven in a couple runs and had some good ABs. The double play was disappointing, though. Scary start to the 9th already. Can we just go back to Hoffman striking everyone out? That was fun.
  19. GAMEL BOMB! GET THIS GUY MORE PT! Haven't been able to follow the IGT tonight, but looks like I picked a good time to pop back in. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Get a couple more and let's close this one out.
  20. Macha said last night that he wasn't sure if Corey would be ready for tonight's game, since it's been a few days since he's done anything baseball related. I'm glad to see Gamel hitting 5th, though. I'd prefer if he hits first or second, but I just like seeing Braun-Fielder-Gamel in a row. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. ESPN is confirming that Nelson will be in the HR derby, since virtually everyone else in the AL declined. The only other two AL'ers confirmed are Joe Mauer and Brandon Inge...I believe they're still waiting for a fourth. Here's to hoping for a Prince vs. Nelson finals. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  22. MLBTradeRumors linked to the Twitter account for the NY Post's Mets beat writer, confirming the deal. Apparently it's straight up: http://twitter.com/NYPost_Mets This probably also eliminates any chance of Corey Hart going to the Braves now, as part of a possible Javier Vazquez deal or otherwise (although anything is possible).
  23. Just reported live on SportsCenter. "WOW!!" quipped Buster Olney. Not sure if there's more to the deal yet, but I'll look around. If anyone can find link confirmation, feel free to post it. Seems like a surprising move for the Mets to me, since Francoeur has been really, really bad and Ryan Church has at least been solid this year. Church should help an Atlanta outfield that was pretty weak offensively, at least.
  24. With Jeff Weaver going for the Dodgers tomorrow and Sunday looking like another great pitcher's duel between Kershaw and Yo, winning tonight would go a long way in improving the chances of the Brewers taking this series. It didn't work out too well with the Cardinals, but they should treat Manny Ramirez the way they treated Albert Pujols -- don't give him anything to hit unless you're absolutely forced to, and let the other hitters in the lineup do the work. The Dodgers' supporting cast (Kemp, Ethier, Loney, etc.) is better than the Cardinals' (Ludwick, Ryan, Rasmus, etc.), but the same principle should apply.
  25. The best part is that you'd never know it was supposed to be Brewer-related if the character wasn't holding the newspapers. The logo on the hat doesn't look like anything, and I'm not even sure what the character is supposed to be -- Bernie Brewer, or just a random fan?
