  2. Timestamp- Last night on WSSP 1250AM, Doug Melvin was on the post game show with Sparky and Tim at 9:40PM (after the Brewers 4-3 win against the Braves). Sparky and Tim talked with Melvin regarding whether or not he is working on any major trades or anything. He said he is making tons of calls, but most teams are not quite ready yet to throw in the towel. Basically said he is laying the groundwork, and some teams are close, but not quite ready to deal. Doug mentioned that he is looking for pitching specifically (old news) and what he would like to add is up to a #2 or #3 type pitcher to the rotation. He might also look for some bullpen help. Sparky asked Melvin if he was going to make a trade, and Melvin said, "Look at my track record. I make a trade every year." The last question that Sparky asked him was whether or not there is anyone in the farm system that is "untouchable". Melvin without mentioning names, said, yes there are a few untouchables. He felt that if he were to go after a "big" name, with only two months left on his contract, he wouldn't trade one of his untouchables that he controls for seven years for just 10 starts down the stretch. He said, he would do a "quantity" trade instead of one premiere prospect for a big name, possibly like C.C. Sabathia. Oh and of course, Ben Sheets is not going to be traded- (news event of the year).
  3. Here is a nice article about the Brewer fan base and how well they have been traveling. It says that the Twins are expected 3,000-5,000 Brewer fans for each game this weekend. I guess when we arrive in downtown Minneapolis on Friday, I should make sure I stay on the look out for "Rock" as the article says! Brewer Nation

  5. Shouse almost got taken out by a right handed hitter. Whew! Get Luke Scott and get out of the inning!
  6. If Rickie Weeks comes back and continues to struggle with OBP's south of .325 (assuming they put him back in the leadoff role), any thought to doing another DeLa Rosa for another Kansas City second baseman? I certainly don't advocate sending Rickie Weeks to Kansas City, but keeping him for the bench (or to AAA) and bring in a veteran 2 month rental guy like Mark Grudzielanek who's line this season is .303/.358/.398 (.290/.332/.395 career) . I can't imagine the asking price would be too high for his services as his contract is expiring after this season, and he isn't exactly Brian Roberts. Grudz plays pretty solid defense, and could provide some OBP on top the order. I don't know what KC would want for Grudz, but maybe it is a possibility if Melvin is looking to upgrade the offense a bit. Personally, I prefer Rickie to bust out like he was suppose to and not need Grudz, but if there was any smoke to that Brian Roberts talk, there may be some fire in that Melvin is looking at upgrading the offense a bit and with it make the middle infield a bit stronger defensively. In reality if Weeks has a 3 week hot streak, he will catch Grudzielanek offensively. If not, again maybe he is a low cost option.
  7. Since it was pointed out by razzorsharp that the Marlins are idle, here you go. Nice three days! 8. I hope this bullpen late inning suckitude doesn't carry over against the Orioles. Stat nerds can't rejoice either. The Brewers could have had a positive run differential after this one..... Riske who normally starts his seasons slow, must be back to April 1st after that outing.
  9. If I am a Cards fan, I might be saying the same thing about winning the Wild Card with Wainright, Looper, Lohse, Wellemeyer, and Piniero. The Brewers according to PECOTA have the best odds at winning the Wild Card right now. They are definitely in my opinion have much more than an "unlikely" chance. They also have a shot at catching the Cubs, but I agree adding a new arm would certainly help. I also think another bat would be nice to add (Ray Durham or my Brian Roberts pipe dream).

  11. Since this thread got bumped up a bit, I think Lukevan mentioned a place to get a bite to eat downtown. Where is a good place to mingle at a family friendly restaurant/pub before the game? As mentioned, we are staying downtown 4 blocks from the Humpty Dome at the Best Western Normandy Inn (on 8th Street).

  13. I certainly agree. What's more, they both have positive run differentials as well. The Braves losses in those one run games are staggering. If they start winning those, look out.
  14. Lost a game in the standings over the weekend. St. Louis gets KC for three games at home. Florida is on the coast beginning a 6 game trip to Seattle and Oakland. Our run scored differential also took a beating too this weekend. 2008 National League - Wild Card Standings NATIONAL W L Pct GB HOME ROAD RS RA STRK L10 St. Louis 42 29 .592 - 23-14 19-15 334 310 Won 2 6-4 Florida 37 32 .536 4 22-15 15-17 337 339 Won 1 5-5 Milwaukee 36 33 .522 5 20-12 16-21 308 321 Won 1 5-5 Atlanta 34 36 .486 7.5 25-11 9-25 321 282 Lost 1 3-7 Pittsburgh 34 36 .486 7.5 21-15 13-21 343 366 Won 1 5-5 NY Mets 33 35 .485 7.5 20-14 13-21 322 316 Won 1 3-7 Houston 33 37 .471 8.5 17-16 16-21 311 345 Lost 5 2-8 Cincinnati 33 38 .465 9 21-14 12-24 314 352 Lost 2 4-6 LA Dodgers 31 38 .449 10 18-15 13-23 292 297 Lost 5 3-7 San Diego 31 40 .437 11 20-18 11-22 269 324 Lost 1 7-3 San Francisco 30 40 .429 11.5 13-22 17-18 281 322 Lost 3 5-5 Washington 29 42 .408 13 14-21 15-21 266 343 Won 3 4-6 Colorado 28 41 .406 13 16-16 12-25 291 355 Won 2 7-3
  15. I believe I heard on WSSP 1250 AM that Yost says Hardy will be back in the lineup on Tuesday. Did anyone else hear this?
  16. The Marlins schedule to the All Star Break: @ Tampa Bay (3) @ Seattle (3) @ Oakland (3) Vs. Tampa Bay (3) Vs. Arizona (3) Vs. Washington (3) @ Colorado (4) @ San Diego (3) @ Los Angeles (4) And I thought we had some rough road trips. An 11 game West Coast road trip to end the first half. Plus another swing out there to play Seattle and Oakland just a week or so earlier. I think PECOTA'S prediction might come true....
  17. As we are set to begin the next 9 game home stand tomorrow, it is time to begin to think about the next long road trip coming up. No, this is not a prediction thread of what the Crew will do at the end of the month. Lets enjoy the home stand first! So how many of you Brewerfan.netters are attending the games in Minneapolis? Please give a show of hands! How big of a Brewer crowd tends to show up there for the annual series? With that in mind, my family (wife, 2 kids, and the inlaws) are going to attend all three games of the series over the weekend of 27th-29th of June. We are staying downtown at the Best Western Normandy Inn which is blocks from the Metrodome. I think we are sitting in the left field bleachers for game one, the upper deck behind home plate for game two, and in the right field family section for game three. This is the first time I have attended anything at the Metrodome, so as an aside thought, where is a good place to go to catch a good burger and a beer before the game and "mingle" with Brewers fans in the area of the Metrodome? Ok. I lied. I will make a prediction. Brewers win 1 of 3. My road record isn't very good over the years......
  18. Here is the St. Louis Cardinals interleague Schedule coming up which starts immediately after this weekend when they host the Phillies for 3 this weekend: Vs. KC (3) At Boston (3) At Detroit (3) At KC (3) The 9 game road trip starts in a tough place (ask Ned about it), but I think the Cards might benefit from playing 6 games against KC. I hope Pujols being out even things out a bit. Hopefully Detroit gets it going too.

  20. I am starting to believe more in RLuz's philosophy a bit more. I think we need to make a "wild card watch" thread. I feel pretty good about hanging around and catching the Cards and the Marlins. The Cubs may end up winning the division given the crazy ways that they are winning. I am worrying about what the Cards and Marlins do. We only have to hop over two teams with a lot of season left. 4.5 games back in the Wild Card!!! Plus look at the distance now of some of the teams below us that do scare me (LA Dodgers, Atlanta, Houston, NY Mets). Until I see it in August, I can't imagine the Marlins and Cards continuing to play this well. If the Brewers can swing a trade or two for a bat and an arm, and with Riske coming back into the bullpen, I think we might have something cooking. Regarding winning the Wild Card, it would be real sweet to beat the Cubs in the playoffs! Imagine that atmosphere!!!
  21. From the major league thread- I like the Minute Maid Bandbox!
  22. I wanted to start this thread for all of you fans that have seen Escobar play either in the minors or in Cactus league action. With Hardy's current injury status up in the air with that same surgically repaired left shoulder, the prospects of seeing Counsell getting a lot more playing time seemed to have increased greatly. With that said, Alcides line of .332/.370/.449 in 274 AB's this year in the pitching strong Southern League is certainly impressive. The old adage usually says if you can handle AA pitching, then you have a good shot to progress to MLB. We know that Alcides glove is pretty much ready for the Bigs, but at 21 years of age, what do you think his numbers would be if they were transferred to MLB? Could he start 4 days a week for the Brewers and not put up J.J. Hardy type numbers that he did when he first got his call up? Preferrably it would be best to let Alicides climb the ladder slowly, but can he help the big club now?
  23. On WTMJ this morning, Melvin said that Hardy won't play today against the Astros, and tomorrow will probably be examined by Dr. Rasch to see if anything regarding a DL stint is in the works. This always starts with just a tweek, then a day off, then the player is listed as "day to day", then the player flies home for a meeting with the doctor, then the inevitable DL stint begins, and finally instead of 14 days it turns into a month or more. Great! Counsell gets more playing time! I can enjoy seeing this line MLB Gameday line more often: Counsell batting: In play...out(s) Counsell grounds out to the first baseman
  24. If there ever was a time to start showing some life, now is the time. With Pujols possibly going out for awhile and Wainright on the DL, if the crew could at least start splitting some of these road trips with a .500 record by taking the next 2 games at Houston and take 6 of the next 9 at home, they would be 41-34 heading into that big road trip at the end of the month through Atlanta, Minnesota, and Arizona. They could shave off some of that 5 game lead the Cards are currently enjoying over the Brewers in the Wild Card race. They just have to get by Florida and St. Louis currently. Better to only have to bypass 2 teams, instead of 5 or 6 teams. With teams like Atlanta, NY Mets, and the L.A. Dodgers already below us in the standings, I feel that it is a good possibility of the Crew catching the Cards and Marlins who may be overachieving thus far and with the Cardinals injuries, this may make it even more possible. Can Ryan Ludwick survive without Pujols in the lineup?? This years NL Wild Card race is reminding me of the 2006 season. A bunch of mediocre teams battling it out. As bad as it has been this year, to be in this position, isn't that bad. You could be a Mets fan, Braves fan, or something else. However it is time for the Crew to take advantage of the situation. However, this is a lot to ask of a strike out prone, low OBP Ned Yost lineup that has consistently gone through long scoring droughts like the one they are in now- having scored just 1 run in the past 16 innings.
