Wisconsin Legend

With the retirement of Brett Favre, who will be considered Wisconsin's next great professional sports legend after Molitor, Yount, White and Favre?

 

When I think about it, I'm trying to think of who would be the next to have their number retired for their respective team. That's what would make them a legend to me. Longevity factors in which could rule out some current Brewers. Donald Driver won't end up with gaudy-enough stats.

 

I have five guesses:

 

Prince Fielder (front-runner, but has to stay a Brewer and if not, he has to go out on good terms and reach for some records)

Ryan Braun (great first-year numbers, better than all of his teammates not on this list over there first few seasons)

AJ Hawk (has to up his game, but is part of a pretty good defense collectively)

Ryan Grant (not even a huge fan, but his #'s were impressive in his first year with the Packers)

Aaron Rodgers (wait and see...losing Favre isn't the worst thing, he'll prove it)

 

If forced to pick one, I'd pick Ryan Braun.

I go with Braun. Favre's career overlapped with Yount's by just a little, now Braun and Favre overlap a bit. I see us losing Fielder in the next couple of years.

 

Braun has the skills to be a huge player for the next 10 years or so and I think his complete skill set is who you build this team around for the long term....

 

Or he could pull a Pat Listach

It could very well be AJ Hawk, he has all the elements that would make the state embrace him I went to and scored the last Brewers game last season, In addition to the baseball game, I talleyed Packers jerseys on my scorecard as well, I saw a total of 27 jerseys, 12 were AJ Hawk

It would be Prince if he were to play here for another 10 years. That won't happen though.

I mention this here, although it is a little off topic, it was mentioned during the Bucks game the other night.

 

No one will ever wear the number 4 again for the 3 pro sports teams in Wisconsin. Brett Favre, Paul Molitor and Sidney Moncrief all have their numbers retired, or in Favre's case it soon will be.

It would be Prince if he were to play here for another 10 years. That won't happen though.

That's the issue in trying to determine the next legend. We could be in a situation that gives us five or six years of Prince, Braun, etc., and that's just not enough to qualify as a 'legend'. Actually, I'd place Reggie White in that non-legend category, too. In comparison, Molitor, Yount, and Favre were all part of the state's sports fabric for 15 years or more.

Packers: Favre, White, Sharpe, Driver

 

Brewers: Yount, Molitor, Cirillo, Jenkins

 

Bucks: Robinson, Allen, Redd

 

Badgers: Dayne, Alvarez, Tucker, Finley

I agree with Bo Ryan as most likely

 

For it to be any of the Brewers or Packers, I think they'd need to be lifers, and I just don't see it. Maybe if Hawk somehow develops into a Reggie White-type and sticks around it's possible (I even question putting White and Molly up there with Yount and Favre in the first place)

Agreed again on Bo Ryan. Hawk is another one, since the Packers can actually retain FAs.

I'm also 25, and that list would be just about right on with mine for my lifetime of players I remember and enjoyed watching. Except maybe make Marty Conlon the other bookend for the Bucks.

Braun is more likely to be a Brewer long term than Prince, so I'd go with him.

 

Wouldn't it be nice to see this state recognize a Brewer a little bit? Maybe it's because I live in Appleton, but the Brewers get no credit for anything up here.

None of the above. None are likley to stay in Wisconsin long enough or have enough success to be much more than solid players. Everybody else you listed ie a hall of famer.
