Will Doug look to make a waiver wire trade before Sunday

Posted
I was wondering back at the trading dealine Doug made a suggestion that he might make a move come Around Sept if he thought it would help.I believe something along maybe a Ray King type deal especially with Riske not showing much.I was wondering what you all think if he just might pull a deal off.

I just wish Colorado was looking for a young outfielder with upside instead of a young pitcher with upside because Brian Fuentes would make me feel a heck of a lot better. The bullpen is still the weak link by far and will cost us in the end I fear. I would also call Walt Jocketty and see about David Weathers since he's already cleared waivers. The problem there, as was pointed out, is what roster move is made? All that being said, I don't see a move being made.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that was the case with Ray King last year. They definitely could do that, but I wouldn't look for such a player to have much impact.

Could they make a move to add a player via the trade after aug 31st and just rent him for September?
Honestly, I think they have the talent on the existing 40-man roster where they shouldn't have to give up anything talent-wise. Stetter and Dillard will be back, and the bullpen's been fairly rested. They would have TGJ and perhaps Escobar for defensive purposes as well.

well i hope your Right Brian that the Combo of Setter and Dillard can provide some nice support cause Riske has not been holding up his share of the work load.

If they trade for a player, they could easily just demote (or cut, if he's out of options) Nix. He adds nothing and there will probably be a bunch of OFs (Gwynn, Stocker, Branyan, Dillon, Nelson) called up on Monday.

Wouldn't optioning Dave Bush for a couple days be a very easy solution? He pitches tonight, then will have 5-6 days off, they've already sent him down once this year, so his option year is already burned. Seems like he could pitch, be optioned and back up with the expanded rosters on 9/1 in plenty of time for his next start.

That's assuming we actually make a move, which I find highly unlikely at this point.

If they did that, Bush wouldn't be eligible for the postseason roster (unless there was an injury). There's also a limit of I believe 7 days before you can recall a player that you optioned (again, unless there was an injury)

End, you may be correct, but could Ben agree to be optioned? This usually happens once every 5 years or so, not often enough to keep up on this little known idea.

Isn't it anyone that's not on the roster on September 2nd? Couldn't they recall him on September 1st and still be ok? I could be remembering that rule incorrectly.

No, that's why the august 31st trading deadline is so important.

Incorrect. You can use anyone on the 25 man, plus whoever is on the DL, or you can sub in anyone from the 40 man on 8/31, up to the number of guys you had on the DL...3 in the Crew's case.

I'll put a link here that describes it.

I think it would be a nice gesture if the Brewers signed Richie Sexson for the remainder of the season. It would only cost the prorated major league minimum. We're going to be paying that to each of the minor league call-ups anyway. While Sexson's overall numbers this year have been terrible, he's done alright against lefties, and would be an alright option to throw in there against tough lefties to give Prince a day off or three between now and the end of the season. Also, as a RH pinch-hitting option, he provides some power off the bench. Really, though, this would be a sentimental signing. He was the face of the franchise for 4-5 years, and his trade in 2004 was what really kick-started the Brewers' renaissance. He's likely at the end of his career, and is still waiting for that taste of postseason (not counting what he may have had in Cleveland). I think it would be cool to have him back in a Brewers uniform for the stretch run.

And if not Sexson, then there's always bringing back Gary Sheffield for a reunion tour...
