Eddie B at tigers thoughts has his final elias rankings for national league relievers up. According to him Gagne and Shouse both are type B's. I wonder if Shouse would turn down arbitration. Also not that it is a suprise Mota missed the cut, but not by much, if he is right.

I have a feeling that the Brewers bring back Gagne but at a lower price than what they had him for this year. Gagne did pitch rather well in low leverage situation. I just wouldn't put him in the 8th or 9th inning. I wouldn't offer Gagne arbitration because that would be overpaying for him.

I think that Boras would still demand a pretty penny for Gagne and he's not worth it if you're talking about bringing him back with a negotiated contract.

He did pitch better in the second half and down the stretch, but he's been erratic and inconsistent for the last two years. The price that Boras would demand for him would be risky. If you offer him arbitration, maybe he's worth it then. I think that Boras would advise to turn down the arby and try the free market where some team might gamble on his seeming second half resurgence.

Unless they bring him back as a minor league free agent, the least they can pay him is 80% of his 2008 salary, which would be $8 million. Thus, they will not offer him arby. (At least I sure hope they won't.)

Yeah, they can sign him to any deal they'd like. It's only if they offer him arby that the 80% rule comes into play.

I believe they can't sign him until May 1st if they don't offer him arby though. Not sure, but I thought that was the rule.

 

In any case, it is extremely unlikely that he'd be back.

I think they just changed that rule either a year or two ago.

 

And, they can sign him to whatever deal they'd like prior to the arbitration deadline as well.

I think the Brewers want Shouse back too but they shouldn't go overboard with their offer. Stetter showed in playoffs, that he's the main man to get the tough lefties out now.

In arby, Shouse won't get over $1.8M, and maybe quite a bit less. I doubt they sign him for over a year, as he is 40.

Offering Gagne arbitration wouldn't be a good idea. He's not worth much, so you pretty much make him what you consider a reasonable offer and let him walk if he doesn't want it.

No, the only way it happens is like Al's scenario, where he takes a small deal with a team like the Dodgers before the arby-offer deadline to try and re-start his career, then the Brewers would have no risk.

I would offer Gagne arbitration the probability that Boras would take the arbitration money has to be low. I can't remember the last time a free agent to be that was a Boras client accepted arbitration.

there's no way you offer arby to gagne. his minimum deal would be one year and 8 million. i'd be surprised if anyone offered him three years and that amount. i'd also be surprised if anyone offered a multi year deal in any capacity.
