Orlando Cabrera signs with the A'S

Per http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090302&content_id=3906464&vkey=news_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak the A's have signed Orlando Cabrera to a 1 year $4M deal. Because the A's first round pick is protected, the White Sox will get the A's 2nd round pick (as well as the sandwich pick) as compensation.

My first reaction was surprise that Beane would give up a 2nd round pick for a one year deal, but he probably figures he can offer arby next year and maybe get equivalent value (or possibly better). The A's have a decent shot at the division this year with a little luck for them and some bad luck for the Angels. Money wise it's a good deal, and Crosby hasn't been able to stay healthy enough or be good enough to rely on for this year.

I'm surprised more teams with a 1st round protected pick didn't do this with Cabrera, Cruz, Dunn, etc...

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

it's funny...it seems like the system is actually working to some degree this year...everyone is getting fair contracts for their talent and the teams that sucked are actually getting some free agents, rather than all of them signing with good teams...

Except for the compensation... Or maybe I'm just bitter. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif

Bobby Crosby's star has fallen every year, it seems. Didn't he win RoTY several years ago?

I'm really hoping the A's take that division. I'm sick of watching the Angels in the postseason and listening to announcers fawn over Scioscia.
