Mariners sign Jack Wilson

The Mariners signed Jack Wilson on a 2/10 m deal. Nice pick up for Jack Z.

Not bad. Not the biggest fan of Wilson. Average hitter, and no on base skills. But plays pretty good defense.

an elite defender at a premium defensive position is worth five million dollars easily. the runs you prevent count just as much as the ones you create even if run prevention is a little trickier to quantify.

The Fielding Bible says Wilson is the #1 SS in MLB. That's worth $5M/year.

 

Wilson had an $8.4M option for 2010 -- so paying Wilson $10M for 2, is probably better than picking up that option.

It does seem to highlight that JJ should have had more value around the league than he did. It seems like he should have been able to bring back more than a 4th outfielder (who, granted, still might have some potential).

I think saying Jack Wilson has "Pretty good defense" is being modest. The guy is an Amazing SS and I'd want him for my team. (if I had a team)

Wilson is a below average hitter, even for a SS. We do have a Jack Wilson on our team. We just call him Alcides Escobar.
