Now, before you kill me for bringing up adding another bat, let me just say I am just wondering if it would be possible to trade for him. He is owed 15.75 over the next 2 years so money isn't too much of a problem. Nick could also cover for Hart in RF, if Hart is dealt for pitching.

Bullpen mostly. But I wouldn't want to give up one of our cheap bullpen guys for Swisher though. I wouldn't mind getting Swisher I just believe the Brewers have a really good bullpen right now and with the way the rotation is currently set up the Brewers are going to need a good bullpen.

Valid point. What about some of our relievers in AA and AAA? Braddock, Wooten, or Dillard?

Actually, considering the Brewers' budget and current need to add pitching, Swisher's salary is definitely a problem.

Stevo's right. If they had $15.75 to spend on an OF over the next 2 years, they could do better than Swisher. But they don't have close to that.

The Yankees are looking for another starter, so what about Suppan, then we get rid of Suppans 12 million and pay like Swishers 7 or 8 million, that will give us another 4 million.

The Brewers would have to throw another player in for that to work. I was thinking the same thing of a Suppan and Swisher exchange but it would probably cost another player that the Brewers really shouldn't be giving up. Also this will hurt the Brewers in terms of financial flexibility more so than just keeping Suppan. It will also hurt the rotation more since the Brewers would definitely have to find another starter with Suppan out of the mix that means selling low on Hart.

 

Hart may also be the player being traded in that deal but it still doesn't really make sense for either the Brewers or the Yankees to do that swap. The only way it makes remotely any sense is if the Yankees wanted to grab Holliday but I believe the Yankees could get a better return for Swisher than Suppan plus a low prospect. Harang, Lowe, and others makes more sense than Suppan.

Swisher barely has outhit Hart over his career, and costs a lot more. I can't say it appeals to me, never mind you'd have to replace Suppan's innings very cheaply, which while possible, I doubt many of the 1y/$2-3M types will project much better than a 5ish ERA.

 

I forgot to mention that while Swisher had a nice '09, much of that was likely Yankees Stadium induced.

 

EDIT: Amazingly, Nick had far better numbers on the road, which tends to make me wonder if they're sustainable...3x more HR on the road?

Swisher would be a nice upgrade over Hart (at least given last year's numbers from both players), but I think Melvin's razor thin budget makes it impossible to work out.

The Yankees really have no reason to trade Swisher, and realistically can't upgrade in RF over his production without orchestrating a major trade. I think they're eventually just going to re-sign Damon once he & Boras get their heads out of the clouds. That'll shore up LF, and Swisher will once again be a solid compliment at the other corner spot.

Well, they no longer have Matsui (granted, he wasn't really an OF option anymore, but Swisher is a DH option), and may not re-sign Damon. That makes Swisher much more valuable. I would guess Melky is the more likely trade candidate than Swisher.

Melky is just not a good hitter. I'm really glad Melvin didn't trade for him. At least Gomez has offensive upside & is an outstanding defender. Given the fact that Swisher's a switch-hitter, Granderson's a lefty, & Damon (my own assumption that he'll be back in LF) is a lefty too, Cabrera makes the most sense as an OF supersub. He hits LHPing notably better than he does RHPing... which, granted, isn't saying much.

Melky is a pretty average hitter for a CF and he is a pretty average fielder as well. Gomez has to hit better to really be anymore valuable than Melky is. Now Cabrera in RF is another matter, that wouldn't be worth it.

Not trying to be sarcastic here, but this leads me to believe that you're just not very high on Nick Swisher and you're trying to justify why the numbers do not support your opinion of him.

 

I would love Nick Swisher. Gives you a very, very good #2 hitter in front of Braun and Prince, gives you another guy who can put up a .375 type OBP, and 3 of his last 4 years have been outstanding.

 

Hell, maybe Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan? I have absolutely no idea actually, and doubt that'd work. If it DID however, you could deal for a Derek Lowe and be set! And then re-set your X-Box if it doesn't work out!

Latest on MLB Trade Rumors speculates that the Yankees may be working on reacquiring Javier Vasquez in exchange for Swisher and/or Melky Cabrera.
