Brewers have inquired on James Loney

Posted

According to Fox Sports:

The Cubs and Brewers also have inquired on Dodgers' first baseman James Loney, sources said.

The Brewers would want him only if they traded first baseman Prince Fielder, which is unlikely.

Discuss Loney on his own merits, and use either the Team by team analysis of possible Fielder trade partners or the Prince not going anywhere? for Fielder perspectives outside of that.

If he's cheap, sure. But he is what he is. High projections for him would be .290 / .360 / .430 / .790. I don't think he would really be an improvement over a Gamel-McGehee manned corner IF.

Loney is a poor man's Overbay. It's hard to see how he would help replace Prince, except in the sense that he would stand in Prince's place in the field.

Loney for his career has an OPS of .854 on the road although last year was his worst year dropping down to .729. I have always like Loney and had hoped there would have been a larger deal involving Prince/Loney/Dodgers pitching coming to Milwaukee. The train has surely sailed on trading Prince to LA, but dealing for Loney would be alright with me if Prince goes elsewhere.

Loney is Overbay, only younger. Serviceable but any team he's on is going to wish it had someone better..
