Kuroda/Carroll package deal?

Posted
Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees would agree to pay for the McCourt's divorce if they thought it would help them beat out the Sawx and win the World Series.
That has to be the absolute best line of the month -- and by far the most true analogy of the typical Yankee mindset.

I just saw that the Astros are dropping their price big time on Wandy Rodgriguez, and just want to get rid of his contract. I think I'd rather see the Brewers get Wandy/Barmes than Carroll/Kuroda.

This. Although I'd still prefer just Barmes. Don't really see the need for Wandy, unless we can steal him (doubtful).

I'd love Barmes, but again don't understand why we're talking about acquiring a starter. I'll take a vast defensive improvement at 3B and SS first.

A Barmes/Wandy package would be epic, but unlikely. I'd just take Barmes at this point and be happy with it.

Wandy might be similar to Betancourt. We have to take him if we want the other guy (in this case it would be Barmes instead of Grienke). Otherwise picking up a starter (especially an older, established starter) seems odd.

But of course we had Ax so i didn't think we'd go out and get the best closer available, either.

At the end of the day I'm just hoping we get Barmes. I'd take Ryan too but it seems like a long shot. Wandy doesn't interest me, but I wouldn't be surprised if Melvin jumped on that.

I think Barmes would fit nicely. I can't see why the Astros would hold him. What kind of compensation will they get in the form of draft picks for him? I wonder if they'd have interest in Farris or Green plus a decent pitcher from the low minors?

Wandy has been much better than Randy in recent years - I'd be ecstatic if he is being viewed as a Betancourt throw in type, I highly doubt that he is being viewed that way though. I'm all for it as long as it doesn't cost us a chance at resigning anybody.

Rodriguez's upcoming salaries & ages -

'12: $10M (33)

'13: $13M (34)

'14: $13M (35) ... club option w. $2.5M buyout

Talent-wise, he's certainly no throw-in, but that's a pretty big contract for a guy in his mid-30s. Not the kind of deal a team with the Brewers' finances should be actively looking to acquire imo. At the very least you're talking an AAV of $12.75M for two seasons.

Barmes isn't worth taking on that contract when others like Ryan are or should be available. Additionally, this would severely inhibit our attempts to re-sign Fielder (just saying), Greinke and Marcum. If the Astros wanted to pay $15MM or so of the $23MM over the next two years then I could get on board but I think that is highly unlikely.

Exactly. No way do I want Rodriguez at that salary. It would almost certainly preclude the signing of at least one of Marcum/Greinke. I'd take either of them over Wandy for the next several years without even a second thought. Marcum for the long term may come a little cheaper, while Greinke won't be too much more (I'm thinking $16-$20 million per unless he regains his Cy Young form in the next year and a third).
