One way I judge a signing on whether two years from now the guy you sign could be dealt. Ramirez is fools gold. Nice numbers but no impact. Sort of like Carlos Lee without the likeability factor. Astros would love to have somebody take Lee. Brewers will be looking for someone to take Ramirez off their hands in 2 years.

i think aram at 3 years and anything under 45 million improves the team...and shouldn't get too much in the way of other improvements...

I know you said anywhere under 3years/$45million but man...if the Brewers give him anywhere close to this I will go nuts. I think he's worth at most 3 years/$33 million and that is pushing it for me.

i don't want them to spend that much on him either, but i don't think the extra 5 or so million a year will make much difference to the rest of the roster...i hope it's not for that much, but i wouldn't be surprised

How does nice numbers and no impact make any sense? Putting up good offensive numbers certainly has an impact on the team. Is it implied that Aram is some kind of anti clutch player that accumulates stats in meaningless situation or that is poor fielding and poor demeanor somehow counteracts his offensive firepower? I guess I am not sure what you are getting at here.

 

The Astros would love to get rid of Lee because the owe him a bagillion dollars and are a horrible team. The Brewers wouldn't owe Aram nearly the annual salary and the Brewers are positioned to be competitve. I don't see how the situation is all that similar

 

Aram has been one of the best offensive 3B in the NL for a long time now; I would gladly take him for the right price. I would take him for 3/30 in a heartbeat.

 

Obviously signing Aram wouldn't be without risk but there isn't a decent FA out there this year that is not without a good amount of risk. Aram, Rollins, Furcal, Fielder, etc they all have major question marks

I agree with out about not paying him 15 Million a year; but would consider 2009 and 2011 great seasons. Obviously his 2009 was cut short by injury though. Maybe it just a matter of opinion; but I consider an.871 OPS great for a 3B; correct me if I am wrong. 2010 was really his only bad year in a really long time

he had the second highest ops by a 3b in the majors last year and led the nl...actually led the nl in every major category at 3b except runs...in fact, he was 16th in the league in ops, so even as a 1b, he was way above average...would have been fifth in the league last year at 1b, and surely would be a good fielder there

 

so, i don't think you can classify his year as anything but awesome...offense is down across the board

They could have a solid platoon at third between Green and any random lefty-masher, and it would be cheap. They could spend their money at shortstop, fill out their bullpen nicely, and still have room to add payroll during the season.

i don't think they could wisely spend that amount of money at ss...rollins is the only guaranteed above average guy left on the board at short, and he will cost more and be a way bigger risk in terms of production and injury...

 

i would much rather have aram and a defensive first ss than blow a bunch of money on rollins or furcal...

 

as for the bullpen, i think it's krod and umm...fiers and braddock? rogers? surely we won't sign anyone now

Well Aram is probably impossible as of right now since we are paying a set up man $12 Million.... Something is going to have to change to afford Aram and by the time Doug figures it out; Aram will probably have signed somewhere else by then

This. Yes. I know the front office thinks another proven bat for the middle of the

order would be a big plus, but to spend any money on it at 3B when we

have cheap & potentially quite good options already MLB-ready makes

no sense when there are other much greater needs.

 

If K-Rod accepts arby, then it probably forces the Brewers to go with the Green/McGehee/Gamel triumvirate at 1B & 3B anyway. But the seemingly flawed logic Stevo points out bothers me, too.

THe problem is I don't think there is some fantastic SS option that is a better alternative. Rollins and Furcal are just as risky if not moreso. I would just rather spend the money at 3B and get a cheap SS to fill the void.

Why don't we trade Hart? See if that can land us a shortstop and a relief arm. Trading Hart, non-tendering McGehee, and losing Fielder, Saito, and Hawkins would be significant for balancing the payroll. Gindl can get 1st crack in RF, and we could sign a cheap RH option for depth.

 

sign Ramirez for 3b, and check in on Furcal, Scutaro, etc for SS.

Guys the Brewers will NEVER pay Krod $13 million, he will be traded or cut, just relax on the budget!!!

 

His contract is NOT guranteed, and the brewers could cut him before the season and be on the hook for 1/6 of his salary ($13 million?)
