I know Floyd gets very little love around here but I think id rather trade for him at 9mil for one year then get tied to dempster for 3 years. Chicago is looking to get a cheap pitcher to replace Gavin. Would he be worth sending the sox narveson and Taylor green?

Sure it would be worth it for us. But not for the White Sox.

 

You gotta give more than narveson and green. No one even knows if Narvy will be ready next year (and if he is, will he be any good), and green isn't even a lock to make the team next year.

 

Floyd is a decent guy to go after, but you'd need more value than a couple of question marks.

i know it probably wouldnt be enough to get floyd but from the sounds of things the sox are just looking to shed some payroll and dont see floyd as a necessary piece.

Why? People don't want long term contracts and now they don't want short term ones. If the Sox would take Gamel or Green for Floyd why not make the trade?

He's getting that over the next 2 years. $5.5M in 2013 and an option for $6M in 2014.

That's exactly the kind of guy the Brewers should be looking for. They control enough guys, they don't need to take a risk on longer term guys. Floyd is 6-6, with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.076 WHIP in 17 starts against National League teams in his career. If you like Edwin Jackson, then you should like Gavin Floyd. Jackson is #4 most similar to Floyd.

 

Thornton is owed $5.5 million in 2013, not $13 million, with a $6 million option for 2014. That's market rate for a quality lefty setup guy (he's more than a loogy).

 

Sox need help at 3B, though I don't think Green would interest them all that much. Maybe Gamel if they thought he could be adequate there. I also don't think they'd be interested in a pitcher coming off of an injury. It would take a young starter to get both Floyd and Thornton. Brewers do have some quantity there to deal with if they chose to and I don't think it would take one of the top guys, since the Sox would be saving substantial salary.

I guess I value Gamel more than most, since I can totally see Kenny Williams insisting on him in a deal. You can sign a Floyd type for 1-2 years without giving up assets I would think. Just wait until January when there will still be a couple guys leftover.

Floyd and Thorton both would be great. Take $15 million off the Sox hands for fringe players. That's exactly what we want - no long term - and expensive - additions. If Floyd pitches well the worse you do is get a draft pick for him in 2014. At best he helps you to the playoffs.

Exactly. Floyd is a solid 3-4 type starter. I think some of the negativity towards him on here is from fans that are familiar with the Twins. He's struggled more against Minnesota in his career than any other team. But the fact is, he's very similar to Edwin Jackson though streaky. When he's going good, he looks like a top of the line pitcher, but he goes through stretches that last a month to 6 weeks where he's shaky.

 

But overall, his numbers are solid. He'll fan 150 or so per year, give up around a hit per inning, a Whip around 1.30. In the NL, he'll probably post an ERA a few points above or below 4. With a Brewer team that can score, that should be good for 15 wins.

 

Thornton is a hard throwing lefty who at 36 might have lost a mile or two off his fastball, but he gets guys out from either side of the plate.
