Even though I think it would be a very wise decision, I just don't see the Brewers bringing Lucroy back. To quote Mark Murphy the Brewers have "crossed the Rubicon."

I don’t know if there’s some sort of weird behind the scenes issue or not due to his past departure, but Lucroy is a good match right now. He’s been “off” in performance but he’s more than likely still decent and may have a resurgence. He knows the organization.

 

I like Pina for what he is but we could use help there. I think it’d be naive to think catcher is in good shape. With the toll it takes, I think we need multiple guys, and Lucroy is a good idea to me.

 

I like some of our long range prospects, Feliciano in particular, and am very curious how Harrison fares defensively. Then you have others like Peyton Henry. But, I’d like to see more immediate juice at the position and even in the upper minors. My first choice of all would be to work something out to get Mejia but that’s just made up speculation.

The Brewers can wait until he's healthy to release him. Then they'd only owe him termination pay. He should clear medically a few weeks before the opener.

Tough break for Vogt it happens, and the MLBPA would file a grievance as they always do in such cases, but there are worse things in the world than getting paid half a million dollars severance just to be sent on your way, and I'm sure he'd land on his feet somewhere.

Could they file a grievance though, on a non-guaranteed contract? The terms of the contract would still apply and he'd be owed the 30 to 45 days termination pay, regardless of if he's healthy or injured.

 

Either way I think the Brewers wait it out until he's healthy in a few weeks or until opening day approaches and the injury is lingering and they work out a severance deal (if that's even necessary). It doesn't really cost them anything to wait it out.

They can file a grievance on whatever they want, it just doesn't mean they'll win.

 

The MLBPA strongly dislikes arbitration players released in spring. They'll typically file a grievance that the release was a money related release for the team, which isn't allowed. It must be performance related.

Ultimately Lucroy got what he wanted in 2016. He was dealt to a contender. Everything has changed since he expressed frustration over being in a rebuild. He bet on himself and lost. That being said he's still probably worth double what Vogt got and at this point he'd upgrade the roster. But so would Walker and he's still out there too. Strange.

What? Lucroy was the total opposite of Villar and McGehee. He took the security early in exchange for a discount. He would have come out much further ahead if he had gambled on himself like Villar.

 

That said, sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't, but I can always absolutely agree with whatever a player needs to do to just make sure they're set up for life.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Nationals are still in the market for another major league catcher.

 

The Nationals currently have Matt Wieters and Pedro Severino behind the dish at the big league level, but they don't appear to be content with that duo. There were rumblings that they attempted to acquire J.T. Realmuto from the Marlins this winter but scoffed at the asking price. Morosi notes that Jonathan Lucroy could be an option on the free agent market.

According to this, the A's plan to either sign lucroy or acquire Wieters. If the A's were getting Wieters, it makes me wonder if the nats are either signing lucroy or have a trade lined up for Realmuto.
