2018 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 6-20

Elijah Cabell would be huge sign but it’s pretty confusing to scare teams away with signability and LSU and back out. My guess is JUCO to raise stock and price tag for 2019. Brewers have very little money to work with. Our 1st two picks will probably ask for over slot.

 

If he is in, amazing! But I’m not getting hopes up just yet

Having both been LSU commits & playing in many of the same showcases & all-star games for a few years. I wonder if Cabell & Turang have developed a pretty good friendship? Chance to go though the journey with a buddy could also help with the signing

11th round selection Davis Daniel ‘has got it made’ with his future decision

Interesting read at the link above. It's going to be a fascinating negotiation between the Brewers and Daniel based on the machinations of his sophomore-eligible draft status.

 

NOTE: You can learn about Daniel at the video interview found at the link above, but the interview with the current NCAA tournament participant (Super Regionals begin today vs. Florida) was conducted prior to the draft.

 

“This guy has got it made,” Head Coach Butch Thompson said with a laugh. “My statement would be Davis Daniel has all the leverage in the world. He’s a draft-eligible sophomore which means he can come back as a junior as a premium arm that can throw the ball up to 97 miles per hour. I’m not his advisor but Davis Daniel has all the leverage.”

No official word that he isn’t signing with the Brewers, but this ARTICLE mentions the following from an interview with Georgia Tech baseball coach Danny Hall...

 

Hall said he believes of the three Tech signees drafted – pitcher Reese Olson from North Hall High (13th round to the Milwaukee Brewers) and pitcher Luke Bartnicki from Walton High (29th round to Arizona) – will enroll, though he expects shortstop Logan Simmons from Tattnall Square Academy (sixth round to Philadelphia) to turn professional.

Here’s the preliminary rookie-level Helena roster, including four 2018 Draft picks. Seventh-rounder David Fry, a catcher from Northwestern State who signed for $10k, per @jimcallisMLB, is among them.

 

If Callis is accurate about the $10k, that’s $187,000 under slot.

 

Is anyone tracking the bonus dollars? It would interesting to see how much money the Brewers might have for some of the later round HS draftees.

Based on the signing bonuses that we currently have, the team has $505,300 to give to Cabell or another >10 round pick, assuming everybody else in the first 10 rounds signs for slot value.

 

What does it normally take to sign those late-round fliers?

 

Edit - actually you can add another couple hundred thousand to that, which incurs a 75% penalty but would not cause us to lose a draft pick. Most teams go over and pay the $ penalty.

It sounds like Turang might be a difficult sign as well. That extra $700k or whatever could be going to sign Turang overslot closer to $4m, and if he refuses to sign anyways then maybe Cabell is the backup option.

Why was Cabell let go from LSU?

He wasn’t really “let go”, he was let out of his signed National Letter of Intent to attend LSU. By releasing him from that commitment he is free to sign with another school, mostly likely a JUCO, unless he signs with the Brewers.

TWO MORE PICKS SIGNED: The Brewers announced the signings of two more draft picks: Left-hander Clayton Andrews, a 17th rounder from Long Beach State; and catcher Caleb Marquez, a 39th rounder from Blue Springs (Mo.) High School. Andrews is an interesting player. He was one of the Dirtbags’ best pitchers and their starting centerfielder but slid to the 17th round because he is only 5-foot-6.
