Jose Martinez

The Cardinals have made 1B/OF Jose Martinez available for trade. He has 4 years of control and is Pre-Arbitration for one more season.

 

Martinez has hit over .300 in his first two seasons at the MLB level. He has some pop, walks a fair amount, and has struck out at a reasonable 20% of his career at bats. He hits both righties and lefties well and would be an everyday option for us at first or at one of the two corner outfield spots. Adding him to the middle of the order with his skill set would give us a big boost offensively. Defense is not his strong suit though, but that could improve some coming over to the Brewers.

 

This would give us the option of moving Aguilar for prospects or including him in a trade for another MLB guy.

 

What would it take to get Martinez? The Cardinals are in win now mode and are probably interested in acquiring MLB talent back as part of the return.

While he isn't junk overall, his defense is. I don't see what he's going to give you that Aguilar doesn't. Highly doubt the Cardinals trade him within the division.

Martinez is worse in the OF than Thames is. Martinez is strictly a 1B/DH type actually probably more DH than 1B.

 

The Cardinals will probably want Hiura or someone similar in a trade with the Brewers.

What would it take to get Martinez?

 

A severe lapse in David Stearns' Judgement - He doesn't upgrade the Brewers' lineup at any of the positions he "plays" on an NL roster. He'll be traded, but i'd be shocked if it was to an NL club unless they have a glaring need for a 1B.

Good hitter, but can't field. If he's available in July for super cheap maybe he's a worthwhile target where you can hide him on the 25 man for a month before rosters expand, but he's not really a fit on this roster over the course of 162.

Cards need to find a team that needs a DH. That's where that guy belongs.
