Culberson squaring to bunt with runners on first and second and nobody out takes a fastball just under his right eye. As he’s being carted off the field, the umpire at first informs the Braves he called it a srrike, ruling that Culberson bunted at the ball, which he clearly didn’t.

 

Talk about adding insult to injury.

Culberson had the bat out in a position to bunt the ball and never pulled it back. It wasn’t that he was still trying to bunt the ball when he got hit in the face, it was that he never made an attempt to pull it back and therefor “offered at the pitch.” From the replays, it looked like the right call to me.

 

The Lorenzen play isn’t comparable to me because a.) he made contact and fouled the ball and b.) the umps ruled he was pulling the bat back (which I disagree with, but that isn’t the point).

 

Based on your interpretation of a strike on a missed bunt, every batter should just stick the bat out there and hope the ball hits it. That way, they aren’t “trying to meet the ball with the bat” and if the pitch is out of the strike zone, it would be a ball.
