This is a major loss that few will even think about. Montgomery did a great job as the scouting director and our drafts have suffered greatly since he was promoted out of that position.

I think the team made a big mistake promoting Arnold to GM instead of Montgomery who was our most indispensable front office employee outside of Stearns.

From what I can tell, Montgomery was hired as scouting director in November 2014 & promoted to the front office in September 2016, so he was scouting director for two drafts.

2015 produced Grisham & a whole lot of nothing, 2016 was two big whiffs in Ray & Erceg before Feliciano in the 2nd & Burnes in the 4th.

Montgomery literally blew the biggest pick of the Stearns tenure.

You beat me to it Sveum. To be fair the 2016 draft had some hits. And Grisham seems like he will be ok. But to say our drafts have suffered since he left is not correct. The drafts of 2017 thru 2019 seem to have more promise than the 2 before that. That said we hate to lose good front office talent. Hopefully it is a rumor that turns out to be incorrect.

Montgomery is the most overrated front office person in Brewers history. Everyone talks about his drafting...but what did he even do? He always seems to be put on a pedestal, but I’m not even sure what he does these days and his history doesn’t really seem magical.

I’m pretty sure most of his praise comes from his time as Midwest and national supervisor with us...that was in the days of Braun etc. being drafted. I’m not sure specifically when he was in those roles, but I think that is where his praise comes from.

Who even really knows the dynamics of the draft room (or rather the whole draft process)? Teams do things differently, some GMs like to micro manage and make all the picks, some delegate much of it to other people within the organisation, whether that's a scouting director or assistant GM or special assistant or w/e it may be. Some teams have very few voices in the room, others listen to many people. And so forth. Someone having or not having a certain title doesn't mean they alone deserve credit or blame for a draft. If Montgomery did a good job running the draft, then his promotion would in all likelyhood have seen him still have influence there. Anyway, from the outside looking in there's no way to really tell who does what inside a front office. We can make vague guesses based on perceived changes in strategy based on hirings/firings, but there's just too much uncertainty in that for it to have any real value.

If Montgomery was such a great scouting director, and "drafted so well", then wouldn't that mean the Brewers farm system would be ranked much higher and more highly thought of than it is currently?

Yeah, I don't know what he's done since being promoted, but his drafts sucked, I do know that.

I don't think that him leaving will make any kind of impact at all...

best of luck to him though.

Yeah, really hard to tell what impact he has had on the drafts. There are a lot of team aspects to drafting (scouting, ranking, etc..) where even if he was making 100% of the final calls, he is standing on information given him by others. Generally only the very, very, best and worst will make an impact with one person leaving.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."
