taxi squads what you see

clubs can carry up to five players at any time (not just road games). if they carry five players on the taxi squad, one of them must be a catcher.

this thread may give insight on player recalls and contract selections.

the brewers utilized a taxi squad for the first time on the road when they started their series in san diego last week.

at the beginning of that series, c alex jackson, util mark mathias and rhp peter strzekecki were on that taxi squad. we know that mathias was selected when hunter renfroe went down.

not quite. if they carry more than three players, one must be a catcher.

Well, its not like they need a 4th catcher at AAA either.  It is odd that they are carrying another catcher on the taxi.  They only need a catcher on the taxi if they have 5 players on it.  I would think Mathias/Reyes would make more sense.

you have to recognize that when a club brings a player on a road trip, it, in most cases, effectively shuts down his development by a week or more.

david stearns had talked about the need to shuffle players to ensure that no single guy was being pulled away from his class aaa club on a regular basis.

on the other hand, it makes sense that the brewers want to have a backup catcher handy if they indeed have been offering pedro severino to other clubs.

this might have been answered elsewhere, but do the taxi squad guys get to go out and take bp and field grounders/shag fly balls and whatnot? I'm assuming so but just curious.

With three catchers on the roster, they don't need to bring another one up if they trade Severino, whom I hope they trade soon.

yes. they can be in uniform up until game time.

I don't understand taxi squads. I know they are (potentially) a few guys that travel with the team, but I don't know when they can be used. Can they be used in a game, or does the team first have to remove someone from the 26 man roster?
