Final: DSL Brewers2 5, DSL Brewers1 3
Box Score / Game Log

The win improves DSL Brewers2’s record to 15-12, while dropping Brewers1 to 10-14.

This was a solid game, pitting two impressive 18-year old starting LHPs against each other in Anfernny Reyes (0.94 ERA in 28 2/3 innings) and Osbriel Mogollon (0.98 ERA in 18 1/3 innings).

With these two terrific youngsters on the mound, it’s unsurprising that the game was scoreless into the 6th inning, with Brewers1 actually no-hit by Reyes through four innings. Together, Reyes and Mogollon covered 8 2/3 innings, allowing no earned runs (Reyes – 5 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 2 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks; Mogollon – 3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 Ks).

From the line, you can see that Mogollon faced some traffic, actually giving up two infield singles and a walk to start the game, but that initial bad luck was offset by a runner being thrown out on the bases. He added a strikeout and infield pop out to end that threat.

18-year old left-handed hitting 1B Yeison Perez (2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a walk; 1.255 season OPS in 66 plate appearances) opened the scoring for Brewers2 in the 6th inning by hitting his 7th homer of the year, a 2-run blast.

Perez’s teammate 17-year old INF Johan Barrios (2-for-3, 2 walks) reached base four times in his second game back from an extended absence.

Brewers1 had the tying run on base in each of the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th innings, but couldn’t get the key hit(s), being out-hit by Brewers2 10-5 in the game. As an example of the highs and lows that these games tend to bring, Brewers1 OF Duncan Garcia (1-for-4; .766 season OPS) tripled in the 8th inning with his team down 3-2 at the time, only to be picked off base to end the inning

In Other Major Prospects Watch, Luis Lara went 0-for-4 (but didn’t strike out and stole a base) and Jhonny Severino went 1-for-4 with a stolen base.

C Edgardo Ordonez (0-for-1; .872 season OPS) exited in the bottom of the 5th inning, but hopefully this was a planned sharing of catching duties on the day.

First look at De Los Santos. Love what I'm seeing here:

(I quite like the catching work from Edwin Tamoy there as well. Multiple looks and very clean glove work.)

Carolina has lost 5 games in a row, but returns home this week to face Orioles' Low-A affiliate Delmarva. 20-year old RHP Miguel Segura (4.11 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 in 57 innings) starts the opener (forget the graphic). CF Jackson Chourio (.972 season OPS) has reached base in his last 9 games:

Nashville is also home this week, taking on Cardinals AAA affiliate Memphis. RHP Dylan File (4.37 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 in 78 1/3 innings) gets the honor of silencing their bats in the opening game. C Alex Jackson (.742 OPS in 91 Nashville plate appearances) returns from injury for his first AAA or MLB game since June 4th, while Jakson Reetz (also a catcher, with a supreme 1.028 OPS in 273 AA plate appearances) makes his AAA debut as a left fielder:

Biloxi also remains on the road, taking on Cubs’ AA affiliate Tennessee. 24-year RHP TJ Shook (5.40 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 9.3 K/9 in 41 2/3 innings in AA) starts the first game of the series tonight. The team welcomes back LF Tristen Lutz (.795 OPS in 167 plate appearances) from injury:

Man, Wisconsin lost 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth. James Meeker couldn't hold it down in his third inning of relief. The pain is real minus the ability to throw out Kent Hasler and Cam Robinson to shut things down.

Food for thought in the conspiratorial rumination wagon:

Antoine Kelly pulled after a mere 3 innings and 44 pitches. Tyler Black not in the line-up. Could be (and probably is) nothing. Could be 'something'.? We're Fanatics, not reporters. Let the speculation begin. I'm personally headed back into the recorded Game to see if anything else was amuck with Kelly's start - he was cruising.

EDIT: I'm going pulled due to Futures Game Sunday. Get him warm. And then set him down. He was robbed of an additional k my a classic missed strike too much Middle-In.

The Summer of Yeison Perez continues. Has his output been dreamy! ?

Final: ACL Guardians 5, ACL Brewers Blue 3
Box Score / Game Log

The loss drops the Blue Men to 10-17 on the season.

Although they out-hit the Guardians 8-7, the game was not close until a final inning flare-up, as Blue fell behind 4-0 in the 4th inning and 5-1 in the 8th inning.

Seven errors in the game (five by Brewers Blue) resulted in six of the game’s eight runs being unearned.

Both Guardians’ errors occurred to start the bottom of the 9th inning, giving Blue a lifeline. Three singles and a sacrifice fly cut the score to 5-3 with the bases loaded and one out, but a strikeout and fly out ended the game. 21-year old OF Reidy Mercado (.677 season OPS) made that final out in his 0-for-5 game.

40-man MLB roster LHP Angel Perdomo put in an inning of rehab work: 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks. 19-year old two-way player (1B/RHP) Quinton Low (0.00 season ERA in 7 innings) and 19-year old RHP Samuel Dario (3.50 season ERA in 18 innings) each threw a scoreless, hitless inning.

20-year old OF Eduarqui Fernandez is beginning to intrigue again, going 2-for-4 with his 4th home run of 2022, a solo shot in the 4th inning to cut the deficit to 4-1. His 43 K / 9 BB ratio is unpleasant, but the overall slash (.261 AVG / .327 OBP / .500 SLG) isn’t bad, coupled with four stolen bases (zero caught stealing).

19-year old OF Jace Avina (.937 OPS in 87 plate appearances) only pinch-ran in this game, meaning he’s only batted in 2 of the team’s last 7 games.

Final: ACL Cubs 11, ACL Brewers Gold 9 (final in 7 innings)
Box Score / Game Log

The loss drops the Gold squad to 13-14 this year.

Despite giving up nine runs in the 1st inning, the Golden Boys clawed back to 9-6 by the 2nd inning and tied it 9-9 in the 5th inning. They had chances all day long, stranding 10 runners against just 3 stranded by the Cubs.

19-year old RHP Yorman Galindez took the 1st inning bruising: 2/3 IP, 7 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 0 Ks, while 24-year old promote-me-now RHP Ryan Middendorf (1.38 season ERA in 8 2/3 innings) gave up his first runs and took the loss: 2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 WP, 5 Ks.

Gold was out-hit 11-7, with all 7 hits being singles, but then again 9 of the Cubs’ 11 hits were also singles. Neither team homered. Gold out-walked the Cubs 11-3.

Somehow, the Cubs’ game-winning 10th and 11th runs scored on a 2-out single to second base. At least the Cubs’ manager didn’t get to witness their fortune, as he was ejected earlier in the inning for having his player bunt (err…probably for arguing an out call at first base on a bunt).

The Golden Men loaded the bases with nobody out in the final inning on a single and two walks, but the lucky Cubs escaped despite facing the meat of the lineup: Alberis Ferrer strikeout, Luis Castillo infield pop out, Jesus Parra strikeout. Emulating his manager, the Cubs’ catcher was ejected earlier in the inning; I guess this was just part of their voodoo strategy which happened to work this time.

Rehabbing INF Ferrer went 2-for-4, with a walk and 2 RBIs, as he aims to return to Low-A Carolina. OF Diego Larez (.760 season OPS) reached base four times: 1-for-1, 3 walks, 1 RBI.

INF Jadher Areinamo (0-for-2; .911 season OPS) didn’t grab a hit, but collected 3 walks. INF Jose Caballero (.889 season OPS) had a similar line (0-for-2, 2 walks). OF Castillo may be in a mini-slump (.918 season OPS), but managed a 1-for-4 day, plus a walk and an RBI.

Interestingly, he has played some RF and LF but they've been primarily slotting him at 1B. Another keep in mind: He just turned 18 in January. So he's still quite young. We'll just have to 'wait and see' as it were.
