After 2 consecutive 1-run losses, Carolina needs a win in Fayetteville today to split the series 3-3. RHP Alexander Cornielle (season ERA 3.84) looks for his 2nd win of the week over the Woodpeckers. RF Hendry Mendez has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games:

LHP Russell Smith aims for a 2nd straight quality start against Cedar Rapids (6 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 3 BB on Tuesday), and a win which would give the Timber Rattlers a 3-3 series split. LF Tristan Peters has multiple hits in 6 straight games:

Hendry Mendez must have gotten injured on a ball hit to to him in right field in the 2nd inning, which ultimately resulted in an inside-the-park home run for Fayetteville. Dang it.

It is the time of year where you see someone exited a game and immediately question injury or trade.

Cruel and unusual punishment, if so, after this in the top half:

Man this Hendry Mendez injury has me all sorts of bummed. Really hoping it’s just a scare and nothing serious. That’s a very scary injury

After an extra inning loss last night, Biloxi needs a win tonight to clinch a 4-2 series victory at home over Montgomery. RHP Victor Castaneda will start the finale, looking for a repeat of his performance on Tuesday (6 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks). Amazing 3B Cam Devanney reached base in all five plate appearances and hit his 16th homer yesterday, improving his season slash to .278 / .357 / .512:

After his 2nd major league spot start (63 pitches on Tuesday), LHP Ethan Small (3.34 season ERA in AAA) returns AAA Nashville which leads their home series 4-1 against Charlotte. SS Brice Turang is having a terrific month (.994 July OPS) and comes in with a 10-game hitting streak:

Despite the scary injury to Hendry Mendez, the leaping theft of a potential Eduarqui Fernandez home run, the concession of 2 seventh inning runs to allow Fayetteville to tie it up 4-4, and then having a player thrown out at home in the 10th inning, the Carolina Mudcats still managed to win 5-4 in extra innings. 1B Jesus Chirinos hit the go-ahead RBI double, then RHP Brannon Jordan didn't allow any balls out of the infield in a 3-up, 3-down 10th inning.

Big character win today. Let’s now shift our attention to a quick heal and avoiding major injury (?) for young and tantalizing OF Hendry Mendez…who led off the game, predictably, by getting on base. My thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, and his teammates. That was a scary sight.

For those wanting to see what we're talking about and what Jim is tweeting about:

1:28:22 is the mark on the MiLB.TV replay. He chases a bloop fly ball down the right field line and loses his balance as the ball evades his glove and lands and bounces to the right field wall. Hendry has a bit of an airplane arm thing going on and just loses it entirely and goes head first into the padded wall and is in clear pain from the fall. Scary moment. It does appear like he avoided anything 'major' but let's keep those positive thoughts flowing.

Joey Wiemer has really tanked after a great start this year. He hasn't hit a HR since June 22.  He's struck out 36 times since then.  Batting .155 in July. I know he had an injury. Maybe it's time to give him some time off and get well? It's not like Biloxi doesn't have enough good OFs right now.

Biloxi left Castaneda in too long. 4 straight singles in the top of the 6th.

Manager Mike Guerrero tends to leave his guys in to 'work it out' (or not). That's been his style all season. It's typically your inning(s), sink or swim. There has been the exception when he pulls a guy but I've seen some grisly grisly Biloxi innings.

Biloxi loads the bases with no out.  They don't PH for Jason Lopez (.169 BA), who hits into a double play, Tristan Lutz thrown out at home.

Then they score a run on a WP..

Sounds like the Biloxi Shuckers. Welcome to the partayyyyyyy.? It's anything but straightforward baseball in Biloxi.

Be still my heart: OF Tristan Peters has been promoted to Biloxi. SO excited for the young man. This is such a well-deserved promotion. (Looks at today's Box Score: Tristan hit his 7th two-hit game in a row. Talk about earning it after an already incredible season)

Lutz should get time and I agree give Weimer some time off

That's tricky, tricky, tricky. Lutz really doesn't play right field. Whereas you can move Joey all over the OF and give him reps (and, this gets into: do you give him mental reps, does he need rest for his hand, OR do you let him play through it. What does the manager, the organization, Joey, and the training staff think? We have no idea here), you can't really move Lutz. He's pretty much a LF or a DH. Hamilton can play LF and 1B and DH. It will be very interesting to see who gets promoted to Nashville. There's a lot of moving chairs organizationally at present. AND, we don't even have draft picks placed yet. This is a fun time of the year.

It's 2-2 and we're headed to the ninth inning in Biloxi. Let's see who can pull out another nailbiter here. It would appear surging RHP Kent Hasler is back on the hill to give his second inning of relief work. These Biscuits and Shuckers seem to only know close games or blow-outs. It's quite the thing. Through 20 games (today's is Game 21) played versus each other it is currently a scoring lead of 114-107 Biscuits. That's dang close. Let's hope the Shuckers can pull this out!

And this is the Kent Hasler we saw all season in High-A before his promotions. He has absolutely settled down. He ends his second scoreless inning with a three-pitch strikeout of a dangerous lefty. Just nasty stuff. He opened the count with an absolute stripe on the outside corner. He followed it out with a nasty slider in. He closes it out with a nasty slider down and in for the whiff. It's on to the bottom-half where the Shuckers will look to close this out.
