Vin Scully has passed away

After I had been listening to some of the video clips across social media tonight, it seems like Vin Scully might be one of the last national voices of baseball broadcasting. Almost irreplaceable by the subsequent generation.

We’re losing the legends of the baseball broadcast booths. Not too many long-timers nearly synonymous with their franchises are left.

One of my biggest regrets as a baseball fan happened in 1998 or 1999.  My cousin worked in media relations with the new Diamondbacks in Phoenix and one evening, out of the blue, he called me to ask if I wanted to come down from my apartment (four hours away) to hang out at the ballpark and keep stats for the Dodgers tv booth.

Now, I was 26 or so and had just been getting my feet wet in my teaching gig, so I didn’t have a ton of sick days to cash in on a whim.  Plus, my ‘84 Dodge Omni was a piece of crap and I was at the point when I really couldn’t depend on driving it through the desert heat for four hours without worrying about a breakdown.  (Yes, I was quite frugal back then.)

Anyway, I would have had three nights in the booth with Mr. Scully, and I turned it down.

An interesting epilogue, Mr. Scully joined Twitter a couple of years ago and I tweeted at him and told him the story.  I got a short reply from him (or the person who ran his Twitter) which I found to be pretty cool.

RIP

The loss of Vin Scully is sad, indeed.  But may we all live a life as long, and as full of love and admiration as Scully.  He deserves all of the accolades that are being shared today.
