1250 The Fan

Not sure how many of you listened to 1250 sports out of Milwaukee but I was shocked and saddened to hear of their shutdown today. Will especially miss listening to Brewers postgame with Tim Allen. No longer having a postgame show to listen to immediately after each game is kind of a gut punch. Hopefully one of the other stations in town picks up a postgame show.

I was a big fan in the early days. I loved the brewers postgame, because it was something that wasn’t really available in the mid-2000’s. Their NFL and NBA draft coverage was second to none. Just like with the radio business in general, when you are consistently releasing talent and getting new competition (94.5, 97.3), which began doing similar stuff to you, it is very hard to compete. I feel like 97.3 has been investing in talent while 1250 was downgrading, todays move was no surprise.

I agree, I will miss Tim Allen. I will throw Sparky in that category to, who I have been listening to off and on since he was producing for Homer. I wonder if the game will hire some of those guys.

The point is moot now, but the day I gave up on the station is the day they replaced Rome with the Big Unit. It’s funny that he is on now again in Milwaukee. I occasionally still listen to postgame shows and draft coverage but I haven’t listened daily like I did before.

I will say that overall, I preferred the game’s way of sportstalk that wasn’t 100% sports, but was more like hanging out with some friends discussing a variety of topics.

Unfortunate that this happened.  I wasn’t a regular listener but, when it comes to sports talk, local over national all day, every day.

It’s tough and probably a shock for those guys.  In this day and age, though, they will surely have other options.   Really, these days radio is to podcasts as regular mail is to email.

Start a podcast platform with “channels” and sell advertising.  And kick Audacy’s behind.

I don't wish for anyone to be unemployed but I will not miss the locals on 1250. I found all of them to amateurish--although I still liked Tim Allen for his Brewers passion. He also seemed like a guy I'd enjoy having a beer with.

It always annoyed me that none of those guys had any concept of baseball metrics beyond batting average, home runs, and RBI's. I'm not asking for crazy SABR analysis, but at least mention OBP and OPS when discussing how good or bad a player is hitting. Even better, give me OPS+, wOBA, wRC+, and/or WAR.

I agree its sad that local sports talk continues to be decrease. Truth is that Milwaukee had 3 local sports talk show stations all fighting for a very small portion of the listening audience.

Don't really listen to the station as a whole but as a Brewers fan it will make it less fun having a program to listen to right after a Brewers game, especially when getting in the car after a game like last night's big win. Been listening to Tim Allen for nearly 20 years so will be an adjustment. Would be nice if one of the other stations picked him up and had a Brewers postgame.

Totally agree re local over national.

I'd flip Tim Allen on after games sometimes. Some of the stuff he came up with was kinda goofy but I guess we're all guilty of that sometimes; I enjoyed his passion for the Brewers.

The rest of the programming I won't miss simply because it was so Packer-centric & My interest in the NFL over the years has almost totally dried up.

TMJ has a talk show after the games. I might give that a try but expect it's a little too "company line" for my taste.

TMJ is never as good because there are a ton of commercials and do all of the recap, highlights and so forth. 1250 would cut into programming after the last pitch.  Was never a fan of Pauley at 620 either as you can tell he didn't have the passion (actually from St Louis and now does Cardinals stuff) of a lifelong Brewers fan like Allen.

I had to look it up. In July 2022

94.5 WKTI had a 0.9

97.3 WRNW had a 0.9

1250 WSSP had a 0.7.

All 3 stations are basically competing for the same listeners and advertisers. Tough business to be in.

This sadly impacts us in the Appleton Green bay area. I used to be able to listen to local sports shows from early morning to 6pm. Now there's a spot between from 11-2 with only national shows because the Big Show is gone.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

All I really care about is Tim Allen having a spot for the postgame show. The guy is a class act and he deserves a spot on the airwaves. Is somebody going to pick him up?

Tune in to 93.7 this AM --

It's good to see Tim Allen land on his feet so soon.

he was the best thing about that old station, so I'm not surprised and am happy for him. Its really all he wanted to do was a postgame. I don't think he cared much about that Ramie and Tim show. I'm sure he will be talking fantasy football as well.

I could see Steve Fifer joining too, to do similar work for the Bucks or Packers, IF he wants to. He does have a family now and maybe he wants to try to get a job during normal business hrs, who knows, but I think he would be an asset to the fan.

Sparky hasn't done Bucks postgame in years. He was basically just down to the 3 hours during the afternoon each day with The Big Show (which was borderline unlistenable anyhow haha).

So Jim Rome is back on the air in Milwaukee. I haven't listened to him in ages. I probably won't listen again but I'll remember Toby in Houston and Carl in Rosemead for the rest of my life.

It is, I was such a large fan in my youth. Its just not the same. Its gotten way too preachy. He still uses a lot of the same audio drops. The funny thing, I really stopped listening regularly to the station when they replaced Rome with the Big Unit, and its all come full circle.
