Winter Baseball Leagues

I know some managers want to see prospects play in an actual game that they are at so they can get a feel for them.

Without a doubt! Just saying that big league invites are usually for guys that are in consideration for 40-man roster spots.  Prospects don’t have to get a big league invite to play in big league spring training games.  Also, a big league invite would imply that Chourio would practice with the big league squad for at least a portion of spring training, but he’ll most likely practice on the minor league side of the complex and come up for some game action with the major league squad.

Monday 10/24:

Light day on the winter ball front, though catcher Brian Navarreto was 2-for-4 with a double in his team's 4-2 loss (box/log), Defensively, he picked off a runner at second base and was charged with a passed ball.

For the season, hitting .273 (6-for-22) with a .788 OPS through eight games.

Navaretto normally would have qualified as a minor league free agent this fall, but signed a two-year minor league deal with Milwaukee last March.

In Venezuelan play last night:

  • OF Jackson Chourio went 2-for-4 with a stolen base for Aguilas
  • INF Andruw Monasterio saw his first action of the fall/winter: 1-for-3, 2 walks, playing second base for Caribes. He's still just 25 years old and has put up respectable numbers in AA/AAA the past two seasons (.813 OPS in 2021, .770 OPS in 2022)
  • RHP Arnaldo Hernandez pitched his second clean inning for Tiburones

Unfortunately Monasterio, despite his youth, qualifies for minor league free agency five days after the World Series unless the Brewers and he arrange for a new deal.

I mentioned this during the latter portion of the Minor League season: given Turang is surely on the MLB roster to start 2023, it would be a real luxury to see Monasterio and Devanney manning the Triple-A grass. They’ve each shown their capabilities and potential in 2022. I really hope they get a deal done.

Awesome!  I can't seem to find the box score for this game.  Anyone have it?

I think the game was suspended due to rain after 3 innings. I wonder if his homer will count in his B-REF stats. ?‍♂️ Offseason fun.

There were conflicting reports online as to whether the game would be suspended and picked up from the point of rain or made up in its entirety. It now appears the game is officially listed as postponed and thus young Mr. Chourio's first winter league HR of 2022 will indeed be vanished off the books, but remain in all our memories thanks to the video.

Mejia scheduled for minor league free agency five days after World Series.

We can certainly continue to follow Mejia now that he's back with the Crew for 2023 - minor league deal, big league camp invite.

So, Jackson Chourio's Thursday game was again interrupted by rain, but this time they have already announced it will be completed prior to a regularly scheduled game Friday.

Tied at 2-2 in the 7th, Chourio is 0-for-4 thus far, one K, again in CF.

Ask and ye shall receive: Monasterio has been re-signed.

I saw this and rejoiced! Thanks for thinking of me my friend.

This is a big signing for my Triple-A enjoyment (and, I obviously think he’s a net plus all over the Diamond whether filling in down in Biloxi or playing regularly with Nashville).

Now protect Mr. Devanney in the Rule 5 draft and I’ll call it a Minor League off-season of ease and joy heading into winter.?

I should add, I sincerely hope Pablo Reyes stays as well - he’s a very likable player and guy (and the Team translator for the solely Spanish speaking guys). He will have the choice to refuse this assignment and become a free agent…I hope he stays.

I actually wonder though, if Nashville, the city, is a draw for these AAAA guys. As in, they know what they are as players, and they make the most of it, living in a great city. It's awesome knowing they'll be our affiliate for the foreseeable future.

Chourio finished 0-for-5, flying out in the one at-bat after the game resumed. His team won, 7-2.

***

The regularly scheduled nightcap was cut short to just five innings as weather continues to wreak some havoc in Venezuela. Chourio was 0-for-2 but drew an intentional walk and scored. Assume that Chourio is playing CF unless we note otherwise.

Having lost the earlier home run due to game cancellation, Jackson's line after five games is 5-for-19, one walk, five K's, 1 SB, 2 CS.

Saturday 10/29:

Box / Log

Busy day for Jackson Chourio - 2-for-4 with a double and single, run scored in a 6-1 loss. He threw out a man at the plate late in the game with a direct throw from center field. But the game was pretty much determined back in the 2nd inning. With runners on 1st and 3rd for the opponents and two out, there was a ground ball single to Chourio in CF, he was charged with an error and three runs scored, including the batter. As one fan commented: "Jackson Chourio looked a little nonchalant, looking for the ball after the mistake he made, he was practically jogging, an error that marked the game by the way."

As for another center fielder, Esteury Ruiz:

Box / Log

2-for-4 with a double and single, run scored in a 5-3 loss. Ruiz played clean defense, but he was thrown out trying to steal.
