Winter League Games of Saturday, November 19

Saturday featured a rough Winter League debut for RHP Abner Uribe, but this day will be forever remembered as the Asdrubal Cabrera brawl game.

Cabrera made a clothesline tackle of an unsuspecting Carlos Castro as he rounded first base following Castro’s 3rd homer of the day, which had temporarily given Tiburones a 4-3 lead over Caribes in Venezuela. I wonder if anyone will permit Cabrera to ever play baseball again. Oh my.

  • RHP Abner Uribe: 1/3 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 0 K – thankfully he entered with Estrellas already trailing 7-1. They ultimately fell 12-7 to Aguilas (Cibaenas)
  • RHP Javy Guerra (acquired by Brewers from Rays on Friday): 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K – as Leones defeated Gigantes 2-1
  • C Mario Feliciano: 1-for-3. He was also 1-for-2 in catching base stealers, helping Carolina defeat RA12 by a score of 8-2
  • RHP Matt Hardy: 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K – though his Caguas lost in 12 innings to Santurce 3-2
  • 1B Jesus Chirinos: 1-for-2, walk – though Aguilas (Zulia) lost on a walk-off to Lara 6-5. Chirinos oddly was replaced in the field with two outs in the bottom of the frame, after singling and advancing to second base on an error in the top half of the inning. Hopefully there’s no injury concern
  • RHP Luis Contreras: 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K – for the winners Lara
  • 2B Andruw Monasterio: 0-for-4, walk – for Caribes, who rightfully lost 6-4 to Tiburones in the brawl game
  • RHP Arnaldo Hernandez: 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K – for the victors Tiburones

New trade acquisition and 40-man roster member RHP Javy Guerra's winter ball stats in the Dominican Republic -

Via the Journal-Sentinel's Todd and Curt -

Guerra, who recently turned 27, is a converted shortstop who has made just 44 relief appearances in the majors since 2019.

This past season, the right-hander went 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA and WHIP of 1.31 for the pitching-rich Rays. He only struck out nine in 16 innings over 17 appearances but averaged 98.3 mph on his four-seam fastball and 97.2 mph with a sinker he utilizes to generate ground-ball outs.

"Guerra is a really interesting player," said Arnold. "He’s got a great arm. We feel like he’s trending in the right direction. He’s a converted guy and he hasn’t been pitching full-time for that many years, so we still feel like there’s upside there with him.

"He’s pitching right now in winter ball and done a really good job there.

7 G, 0.00 ERA, 8 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 5 K

We really like the arm, and his stuff is top-end. It’s a guy that you bring into your mix with an upper-90s fastball that has a chance to pitch at the back end of games.

"Those are the kinds of guys that get us excited, and our group is excited to have him aboard."

Winter League Action from Sunday, November 20

I didn't note as many Brewer players in action as usual on Sunday, but it was still a good day, highlighted by Andruw Monasterio's 2-on, 2-out, game-tying 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th inning for Caribes, who ultimately won in 10 innings on Willians Astudillo's 2-run double.

We'll also need to add C Jose Sibrian to the list of Winter League players:

  • 2B Andruw Monasterio – 2-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs – in Caribes' come-from-behind 10-9 extra inning victory over Tiburones
  • RHP Arnaldo Hernandez – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks – in Tiburones’ loss
  • PH/DH Jose Sibrian – pinch-hit walk – in Cardenales’ 13-1 destruction of Tigres
  • DH Mario Feliciano – 1-for-4, walk – in Carolina’s 1-0 extra inning win over RA12
  • C Brian Navarreto – 0-for-4, though he threw out the only attempted basestealer (1st inning) and was part of a key double play to end the 2nd inning – in Carolina’s win
  • RHP Matt Hardy – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K – in Caguas’ 2-1 loss in extra innings to Santurce

  • DH Mario Feliciano – 1-for-2 – subbed out early while trailing 13-1 in Carolina’s 14-9 loss to Mayaguez

Winter League Action from Tuesday, November 22

  • RHP Matt Hardy – 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 K – in Caguas’ 4-0 victory over Mayaguez
  • DH Mario Feliciano – 0-for-3, walk, sac fly, RBI – in Carolina’s 3-2 extra inning win over Santurce
  • C Brian Navarreto – 0-for-4. Also 0-for-2 on catching base stealers – in Carolina’s win
  • 2B Andruw Monasterio – 0-for-4, sac bunt – in Caribes’ 8-7 defeat to Tigres

Winter League Action from Wednesday, November 23

  • C Mario Feliciano – a much-needed on-base-four-times game: 2-for-3, two BB's, one K; even with that effort, through 54 AB's, Feliciano's line is .185/.250/.185 (.435 OPS). All ten of his base hits are singles. Feliciano did see one baserunner steal - it was old friend Yadiel Rivera.
  • RHP Javy Guerra - Guerra now up to a spotless (0.00 ERA) through 11 innings, facing just one over the minimum in two innings (a walk), striking out two. He got the win in a 3-2 game, having pitched the 4th and 5th innings.
  • RHP Abner Uribe was awarded the win despite allowing an unearned run in the top of the 9th that saw his team down 6-4 at that point. But his mates rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame for a 7-6 walkoff. Uribe allowed a single, walk, and wild pitch during his eventful inning.
  • RHP Luis Contreras' transition from Arizona Fall League to Venezuelan Winter League is fine through five games. One earned run in 5.2 IP thus far with a 0.71 WHIP. However, here he entered in the 4th with bases loaded, one out. A wild pitch and sac fly saw two inherited runners score. A 1-2-3 5th inning followed.
  • C Brian Navarreto – 0-for-3, two BB's, one K. Feliciano's winter teammate. Their team lost this game 3-2.
  • 2B Andruw Monasterio - 0-for-3, R, one BB, one K in his team's 9-3 loss- now at a solid .257/.373/.414 (.787 OPS) through 70 AB's
  • 1B Jesus Chirinos – 0-for-1, two walks, was lifted for a pinch-runner in the 7th
  • C Jason Lopez - 1-for-3, R, K - now up to 25 AB's and the OPS still flies at 1.396

Only the Venezuelan League played on this day.

  • 2B Andruw Monasterio – 3-for-7 in a doubleheader, bringing in the winning run with a single in the final inning of Caribes’ 7-5 victory over Aguilas in one game, though they lost the second game 5-1
  • 1B Jesus Chirinos – 1-for-6 – in Aguilas’ doubleheader split
  • C Jose Sibrian – 1-for-3, with no steal attempts against him – in Lara’s 8-3 defeat of Bravos

Man, I love Astudillo's game. He is such a fun player to watch. Of the many many Minor League games I watched last year, he and Jerar Encarnacion were the two players I wanted to watch more regularly. He is such a fascinating offensive talent. You probably wouldn't exepct it given his build and stature, but he is so crafty and just a through-and-through baseball player. He gave the Sounds fits when they played Jacksonville. Will he end up a career ML and Winter Ball journeyman or will he get a chance as a spot player in the Majors as he advances in his 30's?

And, that is today's Minor League deep cut. ? There are just so many good journeyman Minor Leaguers. May they continue getting opportunities. May they not be forgotten while they still have their health and love for the game.

I was reading mlbtraderumors article that mention Astudillo and thought he would make some great AAA depth as a C/utl but a guy that walks (and strikesout) as little as him makes things tough.

I also saw Addison Russell on the same team as Ruiz. He had a good year in Mexico last year, maybe a signing like Singleton is Turang is in the bigs and we need a solid SS in Nashville.

Winter League Action from Friday, November 25

Mario Feliciano
 - 1-for-4 as the DH, RBI

C Brian Navarreto - 1-for-3, double

Feliciano and Navarreto's club held on for a 2-1 win

Jesus Chrinios - on base four times as the DH: two singles, HBP, BB (R, RBI)

2B Andruw Monasterio - 1-for-3, sacrifice fly, walk, two RBI, one K

Chirinos' team won in a walk-off, 9-8 over Monasterios's club

C Jason Lopez' bat finally was cooled for a night, 0-for-4 still a 1.208 OPS thru 29 AB's

RHP Matt Hardy remains unscored upon through ten appearances (11 IP, 1 BB, 8 K). He did not allow a ghost runner to score in the top of the 10th (K, F8, K), and then was rewarded with the victory when his teammate hit a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the inning

Winter League Action from Saturday, November 26

Good games for Monasterio, Peguero and Hardy, while Mario Feliciano had 3 ½ innings to forget

  • DH Jesus Chirinos – 0-for-3, walk – his team (Aguilas del Zulia) won 3-2 in extra innings over Leones del Caracas
  • 2B Andruw Monasterio – 3-for-5, RBI – but Caribes fell 12-6 to Lara
  • RHP Luis Contreras – 1 1/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks – for winning Lara
  • RHP Elvis Peguero – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K – in Leones del Escogido’s 3-2 win over Estrellas
  • C Mario Feliciano – 0-for-1 – grounded into double play; 1 steal against him with none caught; his first inning throwing error conceded the first run; exited for a pinch hitter in the 4th inning – in Carolina’s 7-2 loss to Mayaguez. Was he injured or had his manager just seen enough negative plays for one day?
  • DH Brian Navarreto – 1-for-4, HR (off old friend Braden Webb), 2 RBIs – in Carolina’s loss
  • RHP Matt Hardy – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K – in Caguas’ 9-0 loss to Ponce

Winter League Action from Monday, November 28th

Oh my, Abner Uribe through three outings - 1.1 IP, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 1 K, ERA 47.25

On Monday night Uribe came in to begin the 5th inning (game log):

HBP - ground ball single to LF - wild pitch - BB with another wild pitch on ball four, scoring a run

And that was it. Three batters faced. Eight pitches thrown. Lifted.

Hopefully not injury-related and we see Uribe on a mound again later this week.

***

RHP Elvis Peguero's inning went exceedingly better than Uribe's (game log). Peguero was the 4th of six pitchers to combine on a two-hit shutout, and he nabbed the victory by fanning all three batters he faced in the 7th, all swinging. Peguero has K'd 15 vs. just one walk in 11.2 winter innings.

***

We haven't seen OF Esteury Ruiz in action in quite a while. He posted just a .449 OPS in 16 earlier games.

Winter League Action from Tuesday, November 29

There were decent performances by six Brewers on minor league contracts, although their teams went 1-5 on the day. I’m guessing that guys like Mario Feliciano and Esteury Ruiz are done for the winter after they struggled to produce, but we’ll keep tracking them.

  • 2B Andruw Monasterio – 2-for-5, 2 doubles (now hitting .305) – in Caribes’ 17-6 loss to Navegantes
  • DH Jesus Chirinos – 2-for-4, walk (now hitting .292) – in Aguilas del Zulia’s 6-3 win over Lara
  • RHP Luis Contreras – 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks, allowing 1 of 2 inherited runners to score (ERA is now 3.52) – in Lara’s loss
  • C Jason Lopez – 0-for-2 (now hitting .419), committed an error and allowed one stolen base – in Bravos 6-0 loss to Tiburones
  • C Brian Navarreto – 0-for-4 (now hitting .228, but with .772 OPS), picked off a baserunner and had no steal attempts against him – in Carolina’s 2-0 loss to Ponce
  • RHP J.C. Mejia – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K (ERA is now 3.07) – in Tigres’ 5-3 loss to Leones

Winter League Action from Wednesday, November 30

  • DH Jesus Chirinos – 2-for-3, BB, RBI, K in a 5-4 loss; was the designated hitter
  • C Jason Lopez – 0-for-1, K'd as a pinch-hitter, but his team walked off with a 12-11 victory
  • C Brian Navarreto – 3-for-5, including his 5th HR of the winter, 2 R, RBI leading his team to an 8-4 win
  • RHP Matt Hardy – a 1-2-3 5th inning (one K) in his team's 7-1 win

Winter League Action from Thursday, December 1

  • 2B Andruw Monasterio – 0-for-4, one K, in a 2-1 loss, temporary cool-off for a red-hot bat
  • DH Jesus Chirinos – 2-for-4, BB, two RBI, K in a 13-4 win; again was the designated hitter, now with an .855 OPS thru 31 AB's. All 11 hits singles but eight walks and just four K's
  • C Brian Navarreto – 2-for-3 as the designated hitter, BB, R, one K, team wins 4-3
  • C Mario Feliciano (Navarreto's teammate) - 1-for-2, BB, HBP, RBI

No Brewers arms on winter mounds Thursday.

Winter League Action from Friday, December 2

  • Mario Feliciano - 1-for-4 as the designated hitter in Ponce's (Puerto Rico) 6-2 loss; though better as of late, Feliciano's early at-bats were such that his OPS is still just .474 thru 65 AB's. All 13 of his hits are singles and he's walked just five times.

  • C Brian Navarreto – Feliciano's teammate was 1-for-2 with a walk, OPS of .863 in 67 AB's with Ponce, one stolen base against
NOTE: If you view the 8th inning game log here, you'll see an injury delay, and both the pitcher and Navarreto were removed simultaneously, just in case we notice Navarreto is sidelined in the near future

  • Jesus Chirinos – on base three times in Zulia's (Venezuela) 13-12 loss, again as the designated hitter. Two singles, BB, 2 RBI, 2 K. Chirinos has only had 35 AB's, and his line of .371/.511/.371 is a unique small sample. Like Feliciano, all 13 of his hits are singles (nine walks boost the OBP).

  • Two Brewers relievers faced off and both pitched well. RHP JC Mejia netted the save with a 1-2-3 9th (one K) for Licey in a 4-3 win over 40-man roster RHP Elvis Peguero's Escogido club in the Dominican. Mejia has a 0.83 WHIP in 15.2 IP with 15 K's and only three walks. Peguero allowed only a ground ball single to left field in his scoreless 7th (one K). In 13.2 IP Peguero has a 17-to-1 BB-to-K ratio (!)

  • RHP Matt Hardy's wonderful Puerto Rico campaign for Caguas continues - Hardy picked up his 3rd relief win while maintaining his 0.00 ERA with a scoreless frame, allowing only an infield single while fanning two. Continuing the theme of stellar ratios, Hardy has fanned 12 and walked just one in 14 innings.
