2023 Minor League Transaction Thread

It was a bad day to be a Brewers’ 21-year old, right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic who had not yet made a stateside debut, as all four released players fit this profile, including two who had ERAs below 3.00 last season. Good luck to each of these young men as they seek their next opportunity, whether in baseball or elsewhere:

• Jeral Vizcaino – An international free agent signing in June 2022, Vizcaino was dominant in 2.5 months of DSL game action: 1.46 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 9.2 K/9, .191 AVG against, 38 K/13 BB in 37 IP (5 starts in 12 games). While he was 1.4 years older than his average competition, this hardly seems enough of a reason to release him at this time. Perhaps there are other circumstances (health, family, career choices, etc.) that we’re not privy to.
• Nelson Cuevas – The Brewers signed Cuevas in April 2019. Working purely as a reliever, he produced a 2.79 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 9.3 K/9 in 48 1/3 IP over his past two campaigns in the DSL, unfortunately not quite earning the call state-side.
• Gregory Baez – Signed in May 2021, Baez worked in relief in the DSL, stacking up an impressive strikeout tally this past season (36 Ks in 25.2 IP). However, Gregory’s ERA (5.61) and WHIP (1.68) in 2022 were not as encouraging.
• Waldin Rodriguez – Signed in January 2021, Rodriguez registered a 5.79 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 9.2 K/9 last season in DSL relief work, winning three games and earning three saves.

Mario Perez turns 21 next week. He was first signed out of Mexico in July of 2018 at just 16 years old. He understandably scuffled in Maryvale in 2019 when he made his debut, though the Brewers had him start in five of his 12 appearances. After the lost 2020 summer, Perez would return to Maryvale and it's eerie how similar his numbers were in 2021 to 2019. Lower HIP, but many of his numbers were a near match.

Perez would then make one brief rough appearance in the Mexican Winter League, but that was his last appearance as he missed all of 2022 with an injury not disclosed by the Brewers. We miss the days when the Media Guide provided that information.

I'll check in on the Nashville broadcast Tuesday to see if we can learn anything about the nature of Herb's injury. Nothing as of yet. Hopefully, the 7-Day is an actual 7-Day and this isn't a lengthy or nagging injury beyond this time frame.

Via @Joseph Zarr as he live-watched Saturday evening 4/8: "The training staff is looking at (Nashville RHP) Tyler Herb after a 93 MPH sinker. Something seemed to happen with his hand or elbow there? Not good. That ended quickly. Ugh. One of my favorite Sounds is getting shelved here. He'll make way for LHP Alex Claudio. Bummer! This just after inducing a key double play in his first batter faced. And then after ripping an 0-1 sinker inside he just came up shaking that arm and Navarreto quickly came to the mound, and he was followed by the entire Sounds staff.

On Sunday's 4/16 pre-game show, Manager Rick Sweet lamented Herb's loss in the rotation and indicated he is going to miss the majority of the season.

Ooof. That's a big loss. Tyler has been fantastic dating back to early last summer when he really earned the promotion to Nashville. Injuries. Ugh.

Clearly getting JB some lab work! Good to see Frelick hasn't been put on the IL with his thumb injury.

Per the MiLB Transaction Log, the Brewers have released recently-turned 22-year-old RHP Pedro Rivas. 

If the name is not familiar to even the most diehard of prospect followers, there is a reason, as he had yet to throw a professional pitch in a regular season game.

Signed out of Venezuela in December of 2019, Rivas immediately lost the 2020 Covid season, and then was subsequently placed on the 60-day IL for both 2021 and 2022.

Hoping the young man can live a healthy life moving forward.
