The last time Madison Bumgarner was remotely good was 2019.

If I have to tolerate a Brewer that throws a toddler level temper tantrum every time he gets remotely slighted on the mound, he had better be good.  He's not.

Just go with Junk or Gasser who at least have upside.

We'll see.

That isn’t how it works.

He’s not getting additional incentives no matter who he signs with - if he decides to sign with any team.  If he signs with a team, that team is obligated to pay the league minimum and the D-backs are obligated to pay the remaining amount of the contract.  That’s just how it works.

Not at all, he can sit at home and just collect his money.

I’m assuming he’ll sign with the Cardinals and become good again. Because Cardinals…

Lots of pro athletes are jerks, but Bumgarner never was convicted of felonies., and went to prison so I don’t if anyone can credibly say Bush is the better human.

The point is: Bumgarner (despite reputation) is not far removed from being amongst the best pitchers in the game. He never there hard, and I haven’t looked at the metrics so I don’t know the basis of his extreme struggles this year (mechanics v. diminished stuff). To me, seems like he could be a #5/long reliever at a rock bottom price for a pitching hungry team lien Milwaukee.

At no risk, why not?

Because he sucks.

You think this prima donna would be interested in long relief?

I doubt he views himself as sucky as he is.

Which is exactly why I'd expect him to just not sign with a team and enjoy his money.

What's he gaining by agreeing to pitch to a new team from the bullpen? Rest up with his 2years of well paid freedom and have a showcase if he's wanting to play more at the MLB level. Guy has been a negative WAR player 3+seasons now. It's not like continuing to erode his career WAR will give him a chance at a contract for 2025. Sitting out and a showcase with maybe a lively arm will.
