Also, that's the sort of technology that's going to be used starting next year. Bottom line is the strike zone is what it is according to the rules and the ump shouldn't be free to decide whatever he wants whenever he wants. Automated strike zone will achieve that. Will that lead to some unusual-looking strikes? Yes. But it's the rules...

The umpire is not deciding what the strike zone is. There is no humanly possible way for an umpire looking over the catcher’s shoulder to tell within a fraction of an inch where exactly the ball moving at high speed and with a lot of movement was when it crosses the plate.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I encourage you to take a look at @umpscorecards on Twitter. A lot of umps are definitely deciding what the strike zone is. And because of the lack of consistency, it has a real effect on outcomes. It will be fair with the automated strike zone.

This guy is going to be a pain in the Brewers side for a long time. Just glad he's not in our division.

So far in this career he's just owned the Brewers lineup.

Yeah, umps aren't deciding what the strike zone is...Let's call that pitch a strike for Gonsolin and a ball for Freddy.

You call it deciding what the strike zone is.

I call it an occasional human error.

And I have seen some of those ump scorecards and it does nothing to change my opinion.

And, in case you missed it, I am all in favor of automated balls and strikes if the technology actually works. I’ve seen some complaints that the system being used in the minors is producing a lot more walks. Maybe someone who follows the minor leagues can comment on that.

Are you talking about Gonsolin? He's already 29.

When it's one sided, it becomes a problem. Either way, this discussion is irrelevant as the automated strike zone is coming next year whether we want it or not.

The Burnes Gonsolin rotation at St. Mary's must have been fun times.

You’re stating that as a fact. Has it been decided?

At what point do we just rotate Caratini and Contreras at DH? No homers for your DHs this far into the season is ridiculous.

Not formally. But Manfred has been saying 2024 for a while now and it's in use in the minors as we speak. As decided as the pitch clock and shift ban were last year.

They put Bob “Hurricane” Hazle in the Milwaukee Braves Hall of Fame based on barely over 100 ABs in 1957?

It was a great story, and I mean no offense to his family, but that seems a little odd.

ETA- it was actually the Wall of Honor at Am Fam Field.

1957 was the first season for which I have clear memories of baseball and I remember listening on the radio as he had his historic hot streak when he was called up after a series of injuries.

So then some modifier like “probably” or “maybe” or “hopefully” would be appropriate, depending on how you feel about it.

Check that. Gonsolin was a two way player and a reliever.

Okay about 95%…

Defense being what it is for Joey, can you really keep trotting him out there every day at this point?

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

There’s a bolt out of the blue to break up a 0-0 tie.

It would be an interesting stat to know the percentage of times after scoring runs that the Brewers give up runs in the immediate next at bat by the opponent and how are they compared to the rest of the league

I am hopeful all of this playing time will help Joey's development. I mean we really have no choice until Urias is back.
