Very real chance he’s washed but I still like the move and it’s one I’ve been talking about since the Giants DFA’d him.

All he’s ever done is smash LHP so from a roster perspective this move is a perfect fit!

Even in a pretty down year last year Ruf still had an OBP heavy mid .700 OPS. Not great, but something

116 wRC+ against LHP last year. Not great like you said but that feels like a superstar bat vs LHP for the Brewers lol

Advanced metric credit him with 1-2 HRs this year in most home ball parks outside of SF. Not much, but given the small number of ABs that actually is a very big bump in the middling OPS.

That would make him Barry Bonds at DH for us.

I don't know how he is going to do but I'm predicting a lot of bad puns in the game threads in the future. Darin lies the problem if he has a Ruf go of it.

If he can still be better than Voit, then we'll take it obviously.

Very real chance he's washed though.

I'd bet my lunch money that Ruf can do better than Voit's -53 wRC+ vs LHP this season.

Voit was always likely to regress to the mean somewhat, though, even against LHP...It's that mean we're hoping he can be better than.

I’m sure some regression was coming but he’s been terrible vs LHP for 200 PA now so I doubt Ruf would be worse than that. 69 wRC+ vs LHP fit Voit last year. Ruf was at 116 wRC+ last season.

Yep, no doubt the Brewers would have tried to sign Ruf over Voit in the off season if he was available.

Right. But you never know for sure. Voit has definitely been worse than Ruf against LHP, but Ruf is also 36, going on 37 and was released by both the Giants and Mets who are worse than us...

And Voit was a FA at the start of ST

And Ruf is also more than 4 years older...That's a big thing. He was awesome against LHP in 2021, but the last year and a half he has been much more mediocre against LHP. Does that signal an ongoing decline? We'll see...

He'll be helped by the fact that Voit has been as brutal as it gets against LHP to start the year..

A 116 wRC+ against LHP is not mediocre. It would have been 3rd best on the my Brewers last year minimum 50 PA.

He was bad for the Mets post trade but that’s it. He had a 150 wRC+ vs LHP with the Giants last year and a 114 wRC+ vs LHP with the Giants this year

They've declined and are mediocre compared to what he did in 20-21. Combined with his age, it raises some concerns. Guys at that age fall off a cliff quickly, as we saw with Cain.

I don't think you can draw any conclusions from his 23 total ABs this year...

He had a .375 xwOBA vs LHP before he was traded to the Mets last year and has a .425 xwOBA vs LHP this year.

He'd hardly be the first guy to struggle after being traded midseason.

I don't even know why you're citing his stats from this year. It's 21 at-bats.

He'd hardly be the first guy to struggle after being traded midseason, but he'd also hardly be the first 36 year old to fall off a cliff.

Brewers—— “You are looking hurt, bud.”

Voit—— “Feel fine, actually.”

Brewers—- “Must be feeling pretty stiff, though.”

Voit—— “Nope.”

Brewers—— “Well, then we need to let you, a healthy hole in the lineup,  go.”

Voit——- “ Now that you mention it, my shirt neck has been especially tight lately…neck stiffness, yes.”
