It's kinda funny...there seems to be more negative sentiment toward the Brewers average fans(likely due to the poor batting averages, the Hader trade) but they have NEVER been run as well as this in terms of just being ahead of the curve. Scouting LA, their approach to the draft, the way they find pitching. A lot of that is just...trial and error and they'll miss on guys like Guerra or maybe Yeager(we'll see...did he have TJ surgery). Anyway, they still find Payamps, Peguero.

But the truly exciting thing is the up the middle talent in the lower levels. This is why the trade deadline could be exciting, but also makes me a little nervous. I don't want to see Guillarte thrown into a deal valued as a "lottery ticket," ala Freddy Peralta. That may be his value, but we've seen enough from him to know that his upside is pretty impressive. Lara has the most value among those(who are trade eligible) so I guess if you value him as a top ~125-150 prospect...then I guess(have to give something up to get something).

And then these are the other prospects likely to be traded. The guys who are "MLB ready," or very close to it, but who look like they could be major parts of our next core.

As for the run prevention and how important it is, but isn't part of that because we don't score much? In any event, there's a happy medium. Black has looked REALLY good at 3B fielding the ball. He doesn't have that Anderson arm, but we're not talking about Hiura at 2B here. And Black could also play 1B. I cannot articulate how little I care about a 1B with a .600 SLG. If you have a 1B hitting .275/385/475, AND he can be a 20/40 guy? I'll take that any day. Plus I have to believe his defense would be close to elite at 1B. For a guy who can cover ground at 3B and the only real concern is his arm strength, I know it's not easy to move to 1B, but I think he'd be fine.

If we trade a guy like Black, it has to be for an IMPACT player. Not "just" a reliever unless it's...Emmanuel Clase(which we know isn't happening).

I think under this administration (and the last one, too) run prevention will always be huge, even if we have an offensive juggernaut someday. Keeping pitchers in low-stress situations, keeping pitch counts as tidy as possible, wanting to keep pitchers healthy.........I think all that stuff is tied in to the run prevention mantra.

Agree 100% about Black & 1B. If he does what many project him to do, I have zero concern about not having a big HR guy at a "power" position. As long as his hands are good, and having played a lot of INF I'm sure they are, that may be in the cards for him down the road.

Yeah, preventing runs is important for every team. I'm simply saying I don't think they're going to prioritize a great defensive 3B with no bat over an average one who can hit like Black.

I think he can stick there...but again, if he can't, worst case is 1B.

I think we saw this draft that maybe they're again make a slight change. Wilken and Boeve certainly don't profile as elite defenders at 3B.

I mean...our run prevention has been great, but without a competent offense, you're always going to be fighting an uphill battle. If we thought we could get Tyler Black to hit well the rest of the year, do you think we stick with a sub .600 OPS at 2nd over Black? There's always a sliding scale where it's going to make sense. We DID trade for Contreras despite him being an awful defensive catcher because we desperately needed offense.

Maybe a more direct example is 1B. If Rowdy was hitting like he had been, he'd almost certainly be manning 1B despite being a poor fielder and Owen Miller would be playing elsewhere(probably 2B at this point).

I don't understand why he was kept on the 40, but they just wanted nothing to do with Pannone? He seemed like a capable...what, 9th starter and nice AAA filler. He didn't opt out, we just cut him.

Pannone wanted to make more $$ in Korea. He’d been outrighted in 2020, so could reject an assignment to AAA after the Brewers DFA’d him.

Pannone signed a deal to return to the Kia Tigers in Korea's KBO. The Brewers, like most teams, did not stand in his way.

Ok, but he didn't, right? They DFA'ed him...then three days later they just released him.

This happens all the time when a player has an overseas opportunity. The DFA is done as a formality to remove from the 25-man and 40-man rosters. The release happens to then expedite things rather than waiting up to a week to clear waivers. Pannone all but had his overseas ticket in hand. Yes, he'd have preferred to be on a big league roster, but when no team claimed him, the Brewers made sure he could get on that plane.
