In that situation with runners on second and third and one out you always run on contact. Any bobble or inaccurate throw and you get the run. If the runner is out at home the runner on second moves up and you still have a runner on third.

...........And the vast majority of the time w/o the runner on 2nd also.

That hit by Winker while huge probably bought him more time on the roster unfortunately.

I have no idea how a guy with his swing his season managed to make such quality contact on a pitch that high, have to say that's a brilliant piece of hitting

Also opened my phone to watch the game this morning, and a news article "Elly de la Cruz hits it out of the stadium" and wondered if I should tune in... Turns out it's like an Angels thing, EDlC does something awesome, Reds lose to Brewers again

The Reds came in with a fairly taxed bullpen, Diaz now has pitched 3/4 days, and a lot of others pitched two straight days now with high pitch counts over the last three days. They'll be glad to have Abbott on the mound today, who went 8 innings last time out, but if the Brewers can get to him as they have recently, or we get more Cy Burnes tonight... Hell Yeah!

Random thoughts.......

I think one of our hitting coaches needs to explain to Willy Adames the importance of making sure you take your brain with you before you step into the box.

Rea continues to be a real unsung hero.

Forget the #s with RISP. Zone in closer. Three innings in a row, Ks with a runner on 3rd & one out. And that's early in the game, not ultra-high pressure. This team gets into situations & presses. I know that sounds like an excuse. I know they aren't a good offensive team. But you can be a bad offensive team, and still press.

Sal Frelick, in (I think) 12 MLB PAs, has struck out once. Of course it comes with the runner on 3rd & one out. Welcome to the club.😄 But obviously he's gotten off to a terrific start.

I'm beginning to think Adames is too aggressive at the plate and is trying to hit a homer every time.

That’s true, but in a late game situation where you’re playing for one run your chances of getting one run haven’t been reduced. The chances of getting two runs have gone down with runners on first and third instead of second and third. But, if the runner on first is a good runner he can often steal second without a throw and restore the runners on second and third. Or, if the runner on third pulls up and gets in a run down the batter can move up to second.

No matter what happens, with runners on second and third and one out, I get irritated with the batter not driving the runner in, not because of the runner on third going on contact.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.
