Saturday action:

- DH Jackson Chourio - 0-for-4, run scored - in Zulia’s 3-2 loss to Lara
- 1B Jesus Chirinos - 0-for-3 for Zulia
- CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 0-for-4 in Magallanes’ 4-1 loss to Aragua
- RHP Edwin Jimenez - didn’t retire any of 6 batters (BB, 1B, HR, BB, BB, 1B) - but his La Guaira club stormed back from deficits of 4-0 and 11-5 to defeat Margarita 16-12

What we might call "...an off night for the young men."

On to the next!

Saturday's Action (Jackson):

  • CF Jackson Chourio - 1-for-4, HR, RBI - temporarily cut the deficit to 3-1, in Zulia's 6-1 defeat to La Guaira
  • CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 2-for-5, RBI - 4th inning RBI single extended Magallanes lead to 3-1 over Anzoategui; Magallanes ultimately won 6-3

Elsewhere, the Puerto Rican league commenced play on Friday, although the opening day box score is difficult to find:

C Brian Navarreto (likely a free agent in a few days)

  • Friday: 1-for-4, SF, RBI - added a late insurance run for Carolina in their 4-2 win over Mayaguez
  • Saturday: 0-for-2, HBP, sac bunt - Carolina was one out away from a 1-0 victory, but instead fell 2-1 to Santurce

Sunday fun in Venezuela and Mexico:

  • CF Jackson Chourio - 2-for-4, walk (singled to left field and third base; now hitting .280) - in Zulia's 5-1 victory over
  • CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 1-for-4 (hitting .288) - in Magallanes 8-2 loss to La Guaira
  • RHP Christian Mejias - 1.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K - earned the Win in Aragua's 10-6 defeat of Lara
  • LHP Jesus Broca - 2.2 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 4 BB, 2 Ks, 1 WP, 1 balk - it was a tough start for the 20-year old in Mexico, wearing the Loss in Guasave's 8-7 defeat to Monterrey

Unfortunately, I'm still struggling to find consistent box scores from Puerto Rico.

I'll also say that RHP JC Mejia (injured on August 13, 2023; technically still a Brewer, but suspended until late September 2024) is playing for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Republic. His line from Thursday's 9-5 loss to Cibao: 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks.

Batting average up to .300 with just two strikeouts in eight games... but it's the damage he can do, just getting that quality of contact more regularly is going to be huge. Once he does, sky is the ceiling for him

20-year old OF Hedbert Perez is healthy (last played 18 July 2023) and has joined Tiburones de La Guaira in Venezuela. He actually debuted in Tuesday's 9-1 loss to Caracas, coming off the bench, playing left field and going 0-for-2:

Nice to see Chourio doing well down in Venezuela after a underwhelming performance there last winter.

Yeah that tends to happen to 18 year olds who are playing guys a decade older than them on average. Fact that he's doing what he's doing now just a year later and still as a teenager is remarkable.

Translated: "The young prospect of the Brewers, Stiven Cruz, would be the first starter from Nicaragua for the U23 World Cup that begins on November 24."

Cruz turns 22 this Tuesday. The RHP inexplicably saw his WHIP rise from a stellar 1.17 across 19 starts in 2022 (15 w/Carolina, four w/Wisconsin) to a troubling 1.73 across 24 appearances, 19 of them starts, with the Timber Rattlers in 2023. Cruz has never spent time on an injured list since signing. His excellent debut season with the DSL Brewers in 2021 had him bypassing the Maryvale site to begin 2022.

Decent production on Friday, but we need to monitor Navarreto’s availability:

- CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 3-for-4, double, walk, 2 RBIs - in Magallanes’ 9-6 victory over Lara. His 8th inning double pushed the lead from 5-3 to 7-3
- C Brian Navarreto - 1-for-3, but exited in the 5th inning after he was out at 2nd base on a double play ball - in Carolina’s 5-4 win over Caguas
- RHP Christian Mejias - 1.2 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks (ERA still 0.00) - in Aragua’s 5-4 win over La Guaira

Dude is raking right now.

Absolutely unconscious right now. Just a stud. Unfortunately, I believe he only has a few games left to play this winter and then no more Chourio for a bit.
