$3.5M for a starter that in 22 starts last year went 5+ innings 17 times with 15 bulk outing’s giving up 3 or less runs is quite the bargain. 1.18 WHIP to boot.

Yes...if he were a FA, I'd agree. But he wasn't. Year 1 of arbitration.

I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that's more than I thought. It's also 4.5M GTD if the 5.5M option isn't picked up.

Rea was a Free Agent.

Rea has language in his contract which made him an outright free agent, so he wasn’t beholden to Arbitration deflating  his salary.

Ahhh...ok. Now that makes more sense. I was curious why he wasn't listed on MLB Trade Rumors projected arbitration salaries...but he was just a flat out FA.

Ok, that changes things and makes sense.

In any event, good to have him back.

I think,he is assuming that if the Brewers expect to compete next season…….( they typically do but we will see) they aren’t going to want Rae and Houser as the 4 and 5 men in the rotation without any minor league options for either guy.

if one of them could go up and down like last season it’s a different decision……..

Correct.

Glad Rea is back... But what is our current rotation looking like?

Burnes

Peralta

Ashby??

Houser

Rea

Maybe replace Gasser with Ashby? That back end is pretty scary looking, really hope we add a pitcher to try and replace Woody.

Yeah, definitely think Gasser is ahead of Ashby in the pecking order by virtue of health.

Miley has a $10M mutual option which might make sense for both sides to exercise since Wade won’t likely make much more than that on the open market and seems to like it here.

Would also imagine if they deal one of Taylor, Mitchell, Wiemer, Frelick from the OF depth that a SP could be a priority in that return.

Burnes / Peralta / Miley / Houser / Rea / Gasser would be a pretty solid top six with internal depth options like Ashby (wild card, could end up in bullpen), Carlos Rodriguez, Evan McKendry (if added to 40 man or not picked in Rule 5) and Jacob Misiorowski at some point, plus  any kind of trade acquisitions or low dollar vet signing, the hopeful next Miley, Rea, etc.
