I see lots of people proposing trades with BAL involving Coby Mayo.  Can you help me understand why the Brewers would want Mayo - who can only play 3B or 1B and many feel might not be able to stay at 3B and have to move to 1B - when they have Tyler Black and Brock Wilken coming up?  Especially in a trade for Burnes - with Woody non-tendered, don't the Brewers need to get back young pitching for Burnes?  Yes, the Brewers need 3B and 1B in 2024, but where are all three of Mayo, Black, and Wilken going to play in 2025 and beyond?

Assuming the Brewers trade Adames, I think the player to target is either Joey Ortiz or Jordan Westburg.  One of them will be blocked by Henderson, Holliday, and the other of the two.  The Brewers will need a middle infielder, preferably one who can play SS if Turang doesn't improve at the plate.  The Brewers have Payamps and Williams to trade, and Baltimore needs bullpen help.  A swap of bullpen for MI makes a lot of sense.

I think it’s as simple as Mayo provides tremendous power of which the team can use big-time. Whether he plays 3B-1B or RF, his bat in the middle of the lineup for the next 6+ years would be fantastic.

Wilken is at best 1.5 years away from touching MKE. The jury is still out on Black at 3B. I think long-term Black’s best position might be LF/CF, with this team—LF.

Agree with you — theBrewers biggest weakness organizationally is SS. Adding  Ortiz or Westburg would also be great.

Also agree that trading RP to Baltimore makes the most sense. Elias doesn’t seem like the 1 year rental type GM to me. Payamps for 3 or Williams for 2 seems to be something he’d go for.

Adames has 1 yr left if he's not traded. SS goes to Turang. Black at 2b. Mayo 1/3b along with Wilken.  It's fairly easy to sort this out.   Definitely want some bat that can actually fit the 1b/3b profile that hasn't existed on the Brewers for some time now.

  1. If all succeed: 1B, 3B, and DH.
  2. These are all prospects, there is a good chance one won't succeed.  Thus that person will be at AAA. Hopefully not more than one but it has happened.
  3. Just because we take a player this year, doesn't mean he has to stay for eternity.  They are still tradable.  So perhaps they play on someone else's team.

Not taking players because someone is "blocked" is a horrible way to GM. Always take the player that is going to produce the most (as far as you can tell).  Never settle for a lesser player because of need.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

That often leads to players playing unnatural positions which leads to bad defense.

And Yelich and Contreras will be taking a combined minimum of two games a week as DH (combined 53 games in 2023), either leaving these good bats on the bench or playing unnatural positions, leading to bad defense.

I think we can cross Baltimore off the list.  I think they are going to get Cease and most of the prospects that you would want in return for Burnes or Williams will be traded for Cease instead.

Only if you rest with those players.  Because we trade for them doesn't mean we need to stay that way. The brewers are also pretty well known for identifying people that are flexible in the positions they play to help mitigate that.
