DL Hall delivered six strong innings in a Nashville victory. Carolina took advantage of mistakes for a come-from-behind win. Wisconsin’s comeback fell short and Biloxi was blown out.

For the week, Wisconsin and Carolina managed 3-3 series draws, while Nashville (2-4) and Biloxi (1-5) fell short.

LHP DL Hall made his case for a near-term restoration to the MLB starting rotation via his 6-inning, 93-pitch effort (1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 4 Ks), keeping the Sounds within a run until the offense came through.

Nashville eventually erupted for their 4-run sixth inning behind extra-base hits from center fielder Chris Roller (solo homer), Rodriguez (double), right fielder Brewer Hicklen (double), 1B Wes Clarke (homered for the 3rd straight game) and 2B Christian Arroyo (double).

In relief, RHP Kevin Herget produced a rare blip (2 H, 2 HBP – 1 run) before LHP Tyler Jay (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) retired 5 of 6 batters faced to earn the save.

Sounds’ Extras:

  • After going 9-up, 9-down the first time through the order, left fielder Carlos D. Rodriguez (3-for-5, double) collected the first of his three hits to lead off the 4th inning, although that opportunity wasn’t converted (and hitting coach Al LeBoeuf was ejected in the process).
  • Hall’s velocity peaked at 95.1mph early, but no pitch reached the 94mph mark or greater over his last three innings of work (11 batters).

Next week’s outlook: Nashville (62-57) returns home to face Marlins’ affiliate Jacksonville (58-60) this week, with RHP Chad Patrick (2.85 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 8.7 K/9 in 107 1/3 IP) scheduled to start on Tuesday.

Final: Mississippi 11, Biloxi 1

We’re accustomed to RHP Shane Smith (2 1/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) dominating the opposition, but he only lasted 48 pitches in this Sunday affair.

Facing runners at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out in the 2nd inning, Smith buckled down to register consecutive swinging strikeouts and was ahead 0-and-2 to the next batter before being done in by a gut-punch 3-run homer. Sometimes there’s a very fine line between an awesome achievement and a devastating setback.

Per the game link above, 1B Ernesto Martinez Jr. pulled one back in the 4th inning, which also happened to be Biloxi’s first hit of the game:

Biloxi ultimately went through eight pitchers (including position player Nick Kahle) on the day, with RHP Will Childers (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) putting together the best line:

Shuckers’ Extras:

  • The Shuckers did not get a runner in scoring position until the 7th inning, by which point they already trailed 7-1.
  • The staff did manage to strike out 12 Braves, but the game was particularly rough for RHPs Sam Carlson (1 IP, 3 R, 3 Ks) and Justin Yeager (1/3 IP, 4 R, 1 K). At least RHP Bo Bowman (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) stranded a runner for Smith and Kahle stranded the bases loaded for Yeager.
  • 2B Ethan Murray collected 2 singles and C Darrien Miller also reached base twice (single, walk).

Next week’s outlook: After a tough week at home, Biloxi (55-56) heads out to face the White Sox’s affiliate Birmingham (60-54) for six games this week.

Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes
Final: Peoria 3, Wisconsin 2
Box Score and Game Log

Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Moquette’s Late Homer Beats Wisconsin

Thank you again to the Wisconsin media team for the video highlights:

Please also listen to the informative Mehring/Lobner post-game podcast, featuring SS Cooper Pratt and Manager Victor Estevez.

As you’ve undoubtedly seen and heard from the links above, this was a scoreless affair with terrific defense (e.g. 3 double plays and 2 outfield assists by the Timber Ratters) until birthday boy (now 20) SS Cooper Pratt’s solo homer on a first pitch fastball with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning.

The collection of RHP Ryan Birchard, LHP Mark Manfredi, rehabbing Trevor Megill, rehabbing Enoli Paredes and two initial innings from RHP Tyler Wehrle produced 7 innings of scoreless baseball with no extra base hits, but Peoria’s hurlers matched them apart from Pratt’s blast.

After Peoria got through against Wehrle in the 8th and 9th innings for three runs and a 3-1 lead (punctuated by a 2-run homer after their manager was ejected), 3B Luke Adams reached on an infield single and 2B Eduardo Garcia doubled, thus representing the potential game-tying run with nobody out. Per the video, you’ve seen how Garcia was unfortunately thrown out at home as part of a double steal attempt for the second out, with a ground out then ending the game 3-2.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

  • Based on the roster, Wehrle and Aaron Rund appeared to be the only fresh arms remaining in the bullpen, which may explain why it was so necessary to have Wehrle continue into the 8th and 9th innings, ultimately throwing 54 pitches (40 strikes). He had averaged 36.8 pitches/outing over his past 10 games, so four innings of bullpen work was not out of the ordinary.
  • INF Jadher Areinamo was initially listed in the lineup, but Garcia got the start instead, so it was a relief when Areinamo entered to pinch hit (RBI single) in that 9th inning.
  • Each of Pratt, Adams, Garcia and 1B Tayden Hall reached base twice via hit, walk or HBP. The team went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position, actually better than the Chiefs’ 0-for-4 effort.

Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (70-43) heads over to Michigan to battle Dodgers’ affiliate Great Lakes (59-53), with RHP Will Rudy (5.01 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 8.4 K/9 in 93 1/3 IP) expected to start the opening game of the series on Tuesday.

Final: Carolina 4, Delmarva 2
Box Score and Game Log

Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Split Series With Shorebirds

Starting 19-year old RHP Bishop Letson (3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K – 40 pitches total) was a welcome sight on the mound, returning to game action for the first time in 15 days, throwing 3 hitless innings before exiting after an opening single in the 4th inning.

The Mudcats had no extra base hits and only produced 5 singles, but Delmarva’s 3-error defense was in a generous mood, misplaying 1B Miguel Briceno’s 8th inning ground ball to allow 2 runs across for only lead which Carolina would need:

20-year old LHP Jesus Broca entered in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2-on, 1-out, immediately helped by C Blayberg Diaz catching a baserunner stealing, then retiring the final 7 Shorebirds in order.

DH Yhoswar Garcia continues to make a difference with his bat (2-for-3, walk, 2 runs) and legs (55th stolen base). His bunt single and stolen base to open the 7th inning helped turn the tide, with left fielder Reidy Mercado also reaching via a bunt hit in that frame. Garcia then drew a 2-out walk in the 8th inning, scoring all the way from first base on the Delmarva error.

Mudcats’ Extras:

  • RHP Brailin Rodriguez faced a lot of traffic over 3 1/3 innings of work in the middle innings, but ultimately did a great job eating innings and limiting damage: 1 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks.
  • This was just Broca’s second game in Low-A ball – an impressive rise after playing 4 DSL games and 6 Arizona Complex League before joining Carolina.
  • Center fielder Yophery Rodriguez’s 7th inning single wasn’t exactly a bullet, but it got the job done to send Garcia and Mercado home and tie the game 2-2:

Next week’s outlook: Carolina (67-45) returns home, welcoming Braves’ affiliate Augusta (40-70) for a 6-game set.

We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. On Monday, only the Dominican Summer League affiliates are in action (at 10:00am CST). The Milwaukee Brewers also have a day off before their 3-game series at St. Louis.

BIloxi's 3-game Division lead came crashing back to Earth. After a woeful display of offense for pretty much the entire series, they now lead Pensacola by a mere 1/2 G. THO, sitting in first place after that display @ home could be considered an unlikely blessing. Winning the series 5-1, the Braves managed to claw their way back to relevance as they now sit a mere 2.5 GB. The Shuckers have to make life easier for their bullpen. They are the strength of their squad, no doubt about it but you can't keep going to that well. They have to start finding meaningful offense from literally anyone in their line-up to get the motor running again. The continued season-long offensive woes of EBJ and Wilken - coupled with what may be yet another Mike Boeve injury (certainly missing ample time in both his professional seasons so far) - have truly crippled this team. AND, despite it all, they are still in first place in their division with the path to a post-season berth right in front of them. They control their own destiny. Do they have it in them?

Consulting the magic 8-Ball: "The future is unclear."

It’s all up to the final 24 games. Would 14-10 probably get them in? A healthy Boeve would help immensely. Gotta pray that starting rotation stays healthy, including Peterson and Seminaris who are being asked to cover more innings.

Boeve was indeed added to the 7-Day IL (retroactive to Monday 8/19) today. He has had multiple stints on the IL in 2024. He finished last season unofficially on the IL. This is a massive loss for a struggling Shuckers line-up.
